UPDATE -- EXTENSION STRATEGIC PLANNING
The Strategic Planning Core Group (Ron Alexander - External Facilitator, Dan Kahl - Internal Facilitator, George Ham, Jim Lindquist, Paula Peters, Daryl Buchholz, and Randy Higgins) has been designing the process that will guide our long-term Extension strategic planning effort.

Tomorrow (July 14), letters of invitation will be sent to 40+ people, the majority of whom are external to K-State Research and Extension. Telephone calls will be used as a follow-up to the letters to further encourage these individuals to participate. The group will meet three times at Rock Springs 4-H Center (August 24, October 27, and December 1) to explore what Cooperative Extension will need to look like well into the future so that it is relevant, sustainable, and offers quality services throughout the state. Topics of discussion will include organizational structure, staffing, resource development, fiscal support, information development and dissemination, marketing, constituency development, and a number of other issues. The outcome of this discussion will involve the identification of a vision of the future, and to help develop a set of "evergreen" recommendations for the leadership of K-State Research and Extension. These recommendations will be shared with the K-State Research and Extension system as a whole as the process unfolds. --Randy Higgins rhiggins@oznet.ksu.edu , Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@oznet.ksu.edu , George Ham gham@oznet.ksu.edu , and Fred Cholick fred.cholick@sdstate.edu

TIPS FOR DEVELOPING AN E-NEWSLETTER
Many groups recently have developed an electronic newsletter that is sent to listserv subscribers or internal groups. Here are some tips for developing an effective e-newsletter, from K-State Research and Extension's marketing unit:

* Send the newsletter regularly (e.g. every two weeks, or monthly)
* Use consistent wording in the subject line (it can be catchy, but must clearly identify your group)
* Provide a listing, or headlines, of topics in the newsletter (such as, "In this issue...")
* Write briefs on each topic with a web address to more information
* Include instructions for subscribing, unsubscribing or submitting items

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has a very nice e-newsletter that you can view at: http://www.csrees.usda.gov/newsroom/newsletters/update04/050604.html .

Additional tips on developing effective newsletters is available through the K-State Research and Extension Department of Communications at: http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/communications/PDF/Newsletters.pdf . --Pat Melgares melgares@oznet.ksu.edu

AG TECHNOLOGY FIELD DAY
The Ag Technology Field Day scheduled for August 10 in Salina is shaping up to be an outstanding event and likely the biggest of its type in the United States. There will be more than 10 different automatically steered Ag vehicles in a test drive area. The field day is intended for those individuals who want to learn more about agricultural technologies. Prior knowledge of these is not required. There is no cost to KSU personnel to attend this event if they are pre-registered. Please let me know if you would like to attend. More details are available at the Precision Ag Website, http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/precisionag . --Randy Taylor rktaylor@ksu.edu

MARK YOUR CALENDARS - FORESTRY FIELD DAY SCHEDULED
The Kansas Forest Service; Gary Cross, Doniphan County Extension Agent; and other partners are working together to host a Forestry Field Day, October 7, on the property of Doyle Derrick, located a short distance northwest of Highland. The Field Day will focus on the management and sale of black walnut featuring Derrick's 22 acre black walnut plantation.

Educational sessions on thinning, pruning and marketing black walnut will be led by national and local experts. There will also be sessions on wildlife management. The Field Day is designed for woodland owners and natural resource professionals who want to know more about the management and care of woodlands.

Extension agents are encouraged to attend. The Kansas Forest Products Association and the Kansas Tree Farm Committee are co-sponsors of the event. Contact Bob Atchison at 785-532-3310 or by e-mail at Atchison@oznet.ksu.edu  for additional information and registration. --Bob Atchison

REQUEST FOR ESP AWARD NOMINATIONS
The K-State Research and Extension Micro Annual Conference is scheduled for October 19 and 20. Epsilon Sigma Phi will also meet during the conference and will continue recognizing outstanding Kansas Extension Educators at all levels through the state-wide awards program. The ESP awards committee encourages you to take time to nominate one or more or your co-workers for an award. Recognition by one's peer is certainly an honor for the individual or group and helps promote the excellent programs and accomplishments of our organization. Last year's award winners are listed at http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/esp-AlphaRho/awards/awards.htm , along with the criteria for the various awards.

The general criteria for Extension personnel awards:

1. Development of an Extension education program, which is timely, relevant, and addresses current needs of an appropriate audience or clientele.

2. Innovative, creative programming that includes the development of effective new approaches.

3. A cooperative and helpful attitude toward fellow Extension professionals while contributing significant program accomplishments over a period of years.

Recent programming is considered most heavily.

The Retirees Service Award is based on continuing contributions and outstanding service by a retired Extension professional. The Friend of Extension Award is based on involvement in and support of Extension by a lay person.

Any person nominated (except for Retiree and Friend of Extension Awards) must be current on current year's ESP dues. A listing of current members can be found at the Alpha Rho web site at http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/esp-AlphaRho/members/members.htm .

Nominations can be submitted by hard copy, e-mail, or fax. Please submit your nominations by August 30, 2004 to:

Kansas State University Research and Extension
Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering
