PAT McNALLY APPOINTED ACTING ASSISTANT DIRECTOR - 4-H
We are pleased to announce that effective August 1, Dr. Pat McNally will provide leadership as acting Assistant Director/Unit Head/State Program Leader for 4-H Youth Development, including all roles and responsibilities in that capacity for as long as it takes to complete a successful national search for the person to step in and fill that position permanently. --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@oznet.ksu.edu

NATIONAL SEARCH FOR 4-H YOUTH DEVELOPMENT LEADER
The search committee for the Assistant Director/Department Head/Program Leader - 4-H Youth Development position has been reactivated. The committee currently is involved in a final review of the position description. Target dates for the search process include: gaining Affirmative Action approval of the position announcement and recruitment process by mid-to-late August; publication and broad dissemination of the announcement starting late August; with review of applications to begin during October. January 4 - 6, 2005 have been identified as likely dates for the interviews.

If this schedule holds, a 4-H Youth Development Leader could start March 1, 2005. We are very grateful for the outstanding leadership that Daryl Buchholz has provided during the last several months. --Randy Higgins rhiggins@oznet.ksu.edu  and George Ham gham@oznet.ksu.edu

EXTENSION STRATEGIC PLAN UPDATE
Phone calls are currently being made to 40+ individuals who have been nominated to participate in the long-term Extension Strategic Planning process via an initial letter of invitation from Drs. Cholick and Ham. Once commitments have been made, the membership list will be shared.

Three working sessions will be held at Rock Springs 4-H Center (August 24, October 27, and December 1) to review the history, structure, and operations of Cooperative Extension in Kansas. Members will participate in an analysis of internal and external organizational influences, to identify a preferred vision of the future for Extension, and to help develop a set of "evergreen" recommendations for the leadership of K-State Research and Extension. The effort will explore what Cooperative Extension will need to look like in order to be relevant, sustainable, and offer quality services throughout the state.

Topics of discussion will include organizational structure, staffing, resource development, fiscal support, information development and dissemination, marketing, constituency development, and a number of other issues. Daryl Buchholz, Associate Director for Extension and Applied Research Designate, will assume leadership for this effort. --Randy Higgins rhiggins@oznet.ksu.edu  and George Ham gham@oznet.ksu.edu

MISSION STATEMENT - 5 YEAR PLAN
After much discussion, we have decided not to change the mission statement that will accompany our next 5 Year Plan for K-State Research and Extension. As you know, our new Five-Year Plan includes five Core Mission Themes and twelve Long-Term Intended Outcomes. --Randy Higgins rhiggins@oznet.ksu.edu , Forrest Chumley fchumley@oznet.ksu.edu , and George Ham gham@oznet.ksu.edu

THE STATE'S NEW AGRITOURISM PROMOTION ACT
The Agritourism Promotion Act, that was passed by the 2004 Kansas Legislature and signed by Governor Kathleen Sebelius, became effective July 1, 2004.

- Creating a no fee registration process through which the Kansas Department of Commerce can assist in the promotion of agritourism operations,
- Limiting liability through signage, and
- Creating a tax credit to help offset the expense of agritourism liability insurance for existing and new operations.

To receive a no fee registration packet or to ask questions about the agritourism promotion act, please contact Alisa VinZant at 785-368-7260, Janna Dunbar at 785-296-8132, or e-mail: agritourism@kansascommerce.com . --Steven Graham sgraham@oznet.ksu.edu

STIPEND REGISTRATION DEADLINE FOR WATER CELEBRATION PLANNING WORKSHOP
The August 15 travel stipend registration deadline for the September 23-24 Water Celebration Planning Workshop is just around the corner. I'm writing to remind you not to miss out on the opportunity to have KACEE pick up the tab for mileage and hotel expenses for you to attend the workshop.

A water celebration is an educational, interactive, and fun event that will increase awareness and appreciation of local water resources and issues. The Water Celebration planning workshop is designed to provide tools for planning water celebration event logistics and curriculum, along with a behind-the-scenes water celebration experience. Participants will have inside access to the Topeka Water Festival, along with workshop sessions covering all aspects of conducting educational and sustainable water celebrations that address the water education issues that are most important in your local area. Workshop participants are eligible to apply for up to $2500 per county served for their water celebration event, and support is available throughout the planning process.

The registration forms and agenda are available online at http://www.kdhe.state.ks.us/nps/ . Scroll down to Clean Water Programs, and hit the link for KACEE Water Celebrations. The forms are also available via e-mail in PDF or MS Word, or a mailed hard copy by request.

KSU Extension employees have already been active volunteers for several water celebrations, the EARTH program, and various environmental education events statewide. I hope you'll consider sending a representative from your area to the workshop, and forwarding this information to interested partners. For more information, please call me at 785-597-5452 or reach me through e-mail at melisarth7@aol.com . --Melissa A. Arthur
