From Associate Director - Extension and Applied Research WORD FROM ASSOCIATE
DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH County Action Plans. We are approaching the time when county extension agents should have completed, or be completing the county 5-year action plans. These plans can be a vital communication to the executive board, the program development committee, county commissioners, and to the people within the local program reach who are expected to benefit from the implementation of the plan. I hope you would agree that communicating the county action plan widely is wise in helping prepare your target audiences for the educational initiatives they should expect in addressing key issues within their communities. On Professionalism and Leadership. One of my areas of interest over the years has been on what it means to be a professional and a leader. It really doesn't matter what position one holds within the system; there is always room for professionalism and leadership. One quality that is necessary is that of being a co-learner. As our motto for K-State Research and Extension says, "Knowledge for Life," I believe WE have the first obligation to take that motto to heart. Take every opportunity you have to learn and grow. Whether it be hauling 4-H youth to a state event, or attending a national meeting, we each have an obligation to learn and grow through those experiences. Being a listener and learner are key to developing yourself as a professional and leader. --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@oznet.ksu.edu

THANK YOU The support of the Kansas Association of County Agricultural Agents was very critical and greatly appreciated as was the support of K-State Research and Extension administration, the Geary County Extension Council, my co-workers in the Geary County office, and most importantly, my wife. I can't say thank you enough for all the Kansans who were in Orlando and helped with their support in so many ways. I look forward to representing Kansas in this national leadership position over the next four years. Thank you again! --Chuck Otte cotte@oznet.ksu.edu
