WORD FROM ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH
Greetings! I trust this summer is racing by for you as it is for me. As we are in the midst of fair time, I do hope the youth who take this opportunity to display the fruits of their project work find it to be a great experience, regardless of the color of ribbon. Instead, they take pride in their work and the experiences they have had through 4-H leading up to the fair.

County Action Plans. We are approaching the time when county extension agents should have completed, or be completing the county 5-year action plans. These plans can be a vital communication to the executive board, the program development committee, county commissioners, and to the people within the local program reach who are expected to benefit from the implementation of the plan. I hope you would agree that communicating the county action plan widely is wise in helping prepare your target audiences for the educational initiatives they should expect in addressing key issues within their communities.

On Professionalism and Leadership. One of my areas of interest over the years has been on what it means to be a professional and a leader. It really doesn't matter what position one holds within the system; there is always room for professionalism and leadership. One quality that is necessary is that of being a co-learner. As our motto for K-State Research and Extension says, "Knowledge for Life," I believe WE have the first obligation to take that motto to heart. Take every opportunity you have to learn and grow. Whether it be hauling 4-H youth to a state event, or attending a national meeting, we each have an obligation to learn and grow through those experiences. Being a listener and learner are key to developing yourself as a professional and leader. --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@oznet.ksu.edu

CHUCK OTTE ELECTED TO NATIONAL LEADERSHIP OF NACAA
Chuck Otte, Geary County Extension Agriculture Agent, has been elected Vice-President of the National Association of County Agricultural Agents. The election was conducted at the recent national meeting of NACAA in Orlando, Florida.

Following terms as Vice-President and President-Elect, Chuck will begin his term as President in 2006, providing leadership to NACAA and presiding over the 92nd annual meeting and professional improvement conference of NACAA in Grand Rapids, Michigan in July of 2007. During his terms as President-Elect, President and Past-President, Chuck will also serve on the Board of the Joint Council of Extension Professionals.

Chuck will be the first NACAA President from Kansas since Dewey Z. McCormick who served as President in 1939. Congratulations to Chuck. We are proud he will be representing K-State Research and Extension nationally for the next four years. --Jim Lindquist jlindqui@oznet.ksu.edu

WHITEY WHITEHILL RECEIVES NATIONAL DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD
Dean (Whitey) Whitehill was recognized on Thursday, July 15, by the National Association of County Agricultural Agents at its 89th Annual Meeting and Professional Improvement Conference in Orlando, Florida by receiving the Association's Distinguished Service Award. The award is presented to the top two percent of the county agents from each state with more than ten years service in the nation's Cooperative Extension Service.

The selection is made by county agent peers in that state and endorsed by the State Extension Director. This year, seventy-five individuals from throughout the United States were presented the Distinguished Service Award.

Whitey has served in two southwest Kansas counties and has been responsible for initiating several new Extension programs. He has organized the Finney County Farmers Market, Southwest Kansas Master Gardener training, High Plains Horticultural Society and the Market Wheat Show at the Finney County Fair. Whitey has worked extensively on irrigation management with county farmers. He also has written a weekly newspaper column and produced regional radio shows. --Paul Hartman phartman@oznet.ksu.edu

THANK YOU
I would like to thank all those who supported me in my recent successful election as Vice President for the National Association of County Agricultural Agents during their 89th Annual Meeting/Professional Improvement Conference in Orlando, FL.

The support of the Kansas Association of County Agricultural Agents was very critical and greatly appreciated as was the support of K-State Research and Extension administration, the Geary County Extension Council, my co-workers in the Geary County office, and most importantly, my wife. I can't say thank you enough for all the Kansans who were in Orlando and helped with their support in so many ways. I look forward to representing Kansas in this national leadership position over the next four years. Thank you again! --Chuck Otte cotte@oznet.ksu.edu
