WORD FROM ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH
A continuum of interdependency.... Each of us has a specific role and set of responsibilities in our jobs. Part of that role for each of us is to gain an understanding and appreciation for the broader mission of K-State Research and Extension and Kansas State University. Matters not where you are in this organization, the public often views us simply as a part of K-State.

How many times I have been asked what it is I teach? My relatives continue to ask even after I've been in administration for 12 years! While I don't actually stand in the classroom, I am proud to consider myself an educator first and foremost. Everyone in this organization can identify with being an educator as a part of your job. For those who are never standing in front of a group of students or any type of audience, think about all those times you are explaining and helping others to understand some piece of information important to them. You are an educator.

K-State Research and Extension spans across those who focus on development of human capital through education in the classroom or in our more informal ways of Extension. We engage in research for the discovery of new knowledge and better understanding of the principles and processes to advance society. Research is vital to our ability to teach.

Indeed, as a system, we have a tremendous interdependency for success in our Land Grant mission of improving the social and economic well being of the people of Kansas. The message to take home is in the importance of your work in helping all of us to fulfill this Land Grant mission. And, a thank you to all those ways you find to be a true educator in your daily work. --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@oznet.ksu.edu

TECHNOLOGY UPDATE ALERT
There will be a special e-mail coming to you today, entitled "Technology Update Alert."  Please read this important e-mail message and act on the instructions.  --Roger Terry rterry@oznet.ksu.edu

REQUEST FOR ESP AWARD NOMINATIONS
The K-State Research and Extension Micro Annual Conference is scheduled for October 19 and 20. Epsilon Sigma Phi will also meet during the conference and will continue recognizing outstanding Kansas Extension Educators at all levels through the state-wide awards program. The ESP awards committee encourages you to take time to nominate one or more of your co-workers for an award. Recognition by one's peer is certainly an honor for the individual or group and helps promote the excellent programs and accomplishments of our organization. Last year's award winners are listed at http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/esp-AlphaRho/awards/awards.htm , along with the criteria for the various awards.

The general criteria on which awards for Extension personnel include:

1. Development of an Extension education program, which is timely, relevant, and addresses current needs of an appropriate audience or clientele.

2. Innovative, creative programming that includes the development of effective new approaches.

3. A cooperative and helpful attitude toward fellow Extension professionals while contributing significant program accomplishments over a period of years.

Recent programming is considered most heavily.

The Retirees Service Award is based on continuing contributions and outstanding service by a retired Extension professional. The Friend of Extension Award is based on involvement in and support of Extension by a lay person.

Any person nominated (except for Retiree and Friend of Extension Awards) must be current on current year's ESP dues. A listing of current members can be found at the Alpha Rho web site at http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/esp-AlphaRho/members/members.htm .

Nominations can be submitted by hard copy, e-mail, or fax. Please submit your nominations by August 30, 2004 to:

Danny H. Rogers, ESP Awards Chair
Kansas State University Research and Extension
Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering
237 Seaton Hall
Manhattan, KS 66506

Fax: 785-532-6944
