WORDS FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH
I am going to take some risk this week and point you to an article I read in the PARADE Magazine on Sunday about Coach Joe Ehrmann. It carries some gender bias towards men, but I think there is a message for all. It certainly resonated with me when I thought of the greater mission of K-State Research and Extension.

Coach Ehrmann is a former NFL star for the Baltimore Colts and a volunteer coach for the Gilman high school football team.  And, as coach, his passion is to develop young men by totally redefining what it means to be a man.

He points out society's "three lies of false masculinity."  Athletic ability, sexual conquest, and economic success are not the best measures for manhood. Instead, his better measures of manhood focus on building and valuing relationships, practicing empathy, inclusion, and integrity, serving others, and developing a cause beyond yourself.

Can you be successful if you do those sorts of things? In Ehrmann's work with the Gilman football team, he uses no whistle; he has the team talk of loving each other, helping each other, and being great teammates regardless of skill. No boy is cut from the team based on athletic ability. Every senior plays. And, winning is a by-product, but not the way they measure successes.

So, as you would ask "don't these kids want to win?" Gilman High has finished undefeated in three of the last six seasons and No. 1 in Baltimore. In 2002, they were No. 1 in Maryland and No. 14 nationwide. But, it is really about the quality of the men who come out of that program.

I believe such ethical and principled behaviors in the workforce of a land-grant university would propel that university to the top with respect to how the citizens viewed its value.

If you'd like to read more about Coach Ehrmann, go to: http://www.parade.com/current/coverstory/index.html .

He also has a book out entitled "Season of Life."  I have my copy on order. --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@oznet.ksu.edu

Dr. Dale Fjell will present his seminar from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 8, in Throckmorton Room 2024. --Brad Lubben, Chair, Search Committee for Interim Assistant Director, ANR blubben@ksu.edu

COOPERATIVE EXTENSION STRATEGIC PLANNING UNDERWAY
A first meeting of the Extension strategic planning task force took place on Tuesday, August 24, at Rock Springs 4-H Center with roughly 40 individuals in attendance. The group is fairly evenly split between individuals within K-State Research and Extension and those outside K-State Research and Extension. Energy ran high as the group focused on an environmental scan on influences important to consider in the future for Extension. The group also addressed the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats for carrying out the Extension mission of K-State Research and Extension.

A website, http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/strategic_planning/ , has been created to provide background information and communication for the task force AND for you to know what is happening with the process. At this time, the website contains the letter of invitation, list of task force members, meeting agenda, and background information for the August 24 meeting. As new information summarized from that meeting is made available, that information will go up on the website. We are also looking into developing a feedback opportunity for anyone reviewing information on the website. Those features are yet to be developed. --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@oznet.ksu.edu

EPSILON SIGMA PHI CALL FOR GRANT PROPOSALS
All local, area, and campus faculty are eligible to develop and submit grant proposals focused on professional development and/or program innovation for Extension professionals. Funding requests have generally been up to roughly $1000. You can find the application form and information on the web at: http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/esp-alpharho/endowment/fundgrantapp.htm .

Applications will be judged on need, potential impact, strengthening program, teamwork, leveraging of funds, and potential to see this project result in program growth. Deadline for submission is October 7, 2004.

These funds are made available through the generous contributions which have been made to the ESP Endowment Fund. Grants will be announced at the 2004 Micro Extension Conference, and are to be used prior to the 2005 Extension Conference. --Daryl Buchholz (Chair - ESP Endowment Fund Board) dbuchhol@oznet.ksu.edu
