WORD FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH
Have you thought about taking advantage of a leadership learning opportunity? We are currently taking applications for the 2005 North Central Extension Leadership Development Program, NC NELD. Deadline for applications is October 1.

K-State Research and Extension has a large number of persons who have been through NC NELD, as well as other leadership learning experiences. I am a believer in such experiences. A great, long-term value one takes away is the connections you make with other Extension professionals in the class. Additionally, the experience will open your mind to the different ways Extension has been successful in reaching audiences and creating impact across the country. At the same time, you will gain exposure to some outstanding educators leading those NELD sessions. All such benefits are positive for K-State Research and Extension, because they are positive for you!

If you haven't given much thought to applying for NC NELD, take a look at the long list of those who have been through one of these experiences. You can find the list at http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/prev/ProfDev/Participant%20Directory.pdf . Ask anyone on that list about the experience. I am sure you will get positive testimony from all.

Further information about the 2005 program, including locations of the seminars, will soon be available at http://www.uwex.edu/ces/neld/ .

Application form is available at http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/prev/neld%20application%20form.doc . Applicants must be able to fully participate in all four seminars. If you have questions or desire additional information, contact me, Marie Blythe, current class members: Jodi Besthorn and Twig Marston, or anyone on that list of past participants. Don't pass up the chance!

Completed application forms should be returned to Marie Blythe, 127 Umberger Hall, by October 1. Selected agents/faculty members will be notified by October 15, 2004. --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@oznet.ksu.edu

K-STATE 4-H IS WORKING WITH PARTNERS TO EXPAND AFTERSCHOOL THROUGH NATIONAL GRANT AWARD
The K-State 4-H Afterschool Team of Trudy Rice, Diane Mack, Jennifer Wilson, Diane Nielson, Beth Hecht, Walter Barker and Elaine Johannes have been awarded one of fifteen National 4-H Council grants to support and expand 4-H Afterschool in Kansas.

Thanks to financing from J.C. Penny, National 4-H Council has funded the K-State 4-H Team to establish mentorships between county agents, provide training in 4-H youth development concepts for afterschool, and partner with the national celebration of "Lights On Afterschool."

K-State 4-H Youth Development, in partnership with Boys and Girls Club, YMCA, Kansas Enrichment Network, Junior Achievement and 21st Century Community Learning Centers welcomes local 4-H agents to join the "Lights On Afterschool" celebration through local campaigns, festivals, forums and media.

"Lights On Afterschool" is a national event celebrating afterschool, and brings attention to the need for afterschool programs. On Thursday, October 14, help make afterschool shine in Kansas by registering your afterschool program through the Afterschool Alliance website for this year's celebration event. Check out the "Lights On Afterschool" resources through the national Afterschool Alliance at www.afterschoolalliance.org , and register your program now!

The K-State 4-H Afterschool Team also has some funding opportunities through their national grant to help conduct local "Lights On Afterschool" events. Contact Elaine Johannes, K-State 4-H representative to the Kansas Afterschool Alliance/Lights On Afterschool Task Force, at 532-7720, or e-mail ejohanne@oznet.ksu.edu  if you'd like to know more about those funds and/or would like to be involved in up-coming 4-H Afterschool events and trainings. --Elaine Johannes
