WORD FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH
I've recently been reading The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership by John Maxwell. It is a relatively easy read (good for me!) with some simple, yet powerful principles that help one to grow leadership skills. I am a strong advocate for a
"leaderful" organization. I think of all the ways in which leadership must be exhibited throughout this organization. It can happen anytime we find ourselves guiding, organizing, shaping decisions, and bringing about change. Everyone, INCLUDING YOU, has leadership opportunities and responsibilities both personally and professionally. Leadership reflects a trust and confidence placed in you by others, not to be taken lightly!

Before starting into the 21 irrefutable laws, Maxwell poses four ideas:

1. The laws can be learned.
2. The laws can stand alone.
3. The laws carry consequences with them.
4. These laws are the foundation of leadership.

From Maxwell's book, I am first going to focus on the law of process. If you are interested and willing to become a leader, start today with a learning attitude. Maxwell points out, "leadership develops daily, not in a day." If you believe you can become an instant leader, you are going to be disappointed. And, a leader without any followers is just out for a walk. Can you think of anyone you have known who presented themselves as a leader, but you knew they weren't? Maxwell points to the need for a host of skills to be developed which later get measured by such facets as respect, experience, emotional strength, people skills, discipline, vision, momentum, timing, and lots more.

In the law of process, Maxwell stresses the importance of a leader being a learner. Certainly it fits well with our motto, "Knowledge for Life"! As individuals, we can strengthen K-State Research & Extension by working at becoming better leaders every day. I'd encourage you to participate in leadership workshops or seminars, read, or find any way you can to begin a learning path towards leadership. As you become a student of leadership, you and all those around you, both personally and professionally, will gain from what you learn. True leaders never graduate from leadership school. "Leadership doesn't develop in a day. It takes a lifetime."  --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@oznet.ksu.edu

The University will reduce activity from the close of business on Thursday, December 23, 2004 through Friday, December 31, 2004. Although the University will close during this period, a few offices such as the University Police, will keep a normal schedule. NEW WATERSHED EDUCATION PROJECT FOR YOUTH
EPA recently launched the WATERSHED PATCH project to encourage young people to learn about their local watersheds and to motivate them to get involved in local watershed protection efforts. The project involves a collection of watershed activities designed for schools, science clubs, and community organizations.

The program offers a variety of community projects and hands-on activities for youth in four activity levels:

    River Rookie (Grades 3–4)
    Conservation Captain (Grades 4–5)
    Aquifer Ace (Grades 6–7)
    Watershed Wizard (Grades 7–8)

These community projects and activities tie in nicely to existing educational projects and programs such as River of Words, EPA’s Adopt Your Watershed, World Water Monitoring Day, The Weather Channel’s “After the Storm” TV special, water festivals, storm drain stenciling, streamwalk site surveys, home-based pollution prevention assessments, NWF’s schoolyard habitat program, steam clean-ups, water quality monitoring, build-your-own-aquifer, and others.

Colorful certificates for each activity level are available to recognize youth achievements in completing watershed projects. Watershed patches are available for youth who complete all four of the activity levels. Both items are offered free from EPA.

A guide that explains the program is also available. It includes background information about watersheds, nonpoint source pollution, water quality information, wetlands and their basic characteristics, and groundwater/drinking water.

This program is ideal for use by County Extension offices, County Conservation Districts, and local schools in promoting youth involvement in water quality protection efforts.

K-STATE MANRRS CHAPTER AND COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE DIVERSITY PROGRAMS OFFICE ARE AT IT AGAIN!

They’re at it again! The K-State MANRRS (Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources and Related Sciences) Chapter and the College of Agriculture Diversity Programs Office have joined together to sponsor an event. With the holiday season just around the corner, the two organizations have teamed up with Flint Hills Bread Basket to sponsor an underprivileged family. Even in small town such as Manhattan there are members in the community who are less fortunate than others. We’ve decided that regardless of this fact, there is no reason that anyone miss out on the simple joys that the season has to offer.

MANRRS members will provide the manpower to make the collection box as special as possible, and the Diversity Programs Office will serve as the host for the box itself. Anyone can make donations; the collection box will be placed near the door of the Diversity Programs Office, located in Waters 139. We’ll be accepting canned goods and other non-perishable food items to present to our sponsored family.

To make an experience like this successful, we’ll need the help of the K-State community. We can make a monumental difference in someone’s life just by donating a little of our time and resources! Please help MANRRS and the College of Agriculture Diversity Programs Office make the best of this event and spread holiday joy!  --Zelia Holloway zwh@ksu.edu
