WORD FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH
"Knowledge for life" .... that's our motto. Do you practice or demonstrate that motto? Do you have a professional development plan? Do you take advantage of educational opportunities?

Have you ever been to one of those meetings or training session where individuals are sitting in the back of the room, or maybe just outside the room, chatting, playing cards, or whatever? It's obvious the individuals are ignoring the learning opportunity, and not engaged in any useful, work-related discussions. They might even be creating some distractions for the actual educational event! We've all seen it, right? Unfortunately, we may even have been guilty from time to time??

My message is simply to remind you that our motto is "Knowledge for Life" and that individually, you have a responsibility to demonstrate that motto by being attentive and engaged in those educational settings where you find yourself, even when the setting may not be directly targeted to you. I aspire to those individuals we all observe who consistently exhibit that thirst for learning in every situation, even when you know they probably already have a full grasp of the subject being discussed. It's that kind of aspiration this organization aspires to with its motto, "Knowledge for Life."

Professionals take every opportunity to show respect to both the instructors and the learners by taking on a learning role at every possible situation. I hope you will make a commitment to be a learner in every educational setting, regardless of your role. In demonstrating the motto, " Knowledge for Life," you will encourage others. And, as a bonus, you just might learn something too! --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@oznet.ksu.edu

PUBLIC ISSUES EDUCATION WORKSHOP CONFERENCE
On December 1 - 3, 12 Kansas Extension professionals attended the Public Issues Education Workshop Conference at the Lied Conference Center in Nebraska City, Nebraska. The purpose of the conference was to enhance the ability of Extension personnel to conduct public issue education.

Bradley Lubben, our NE Area Agricultural Economist, was a key presenter in the discussion. Attending were Paula Peters, Pat Murphy, Walter Barker, Joe Harner, Dan Devlin, Will Boyer, Tom Maxwell, Martha Murphy, Mary Lou Odle, Sandy Proctor, Kerri Parsons, and Margaret Phillips. While not feeling totally qualified as experts in the field, the attendees gained valuable information on the basics to conduct a public issue educational event. --Pat Murphy jmurphy@ksu.edu , and Paula Peters peters@humec.ksu.edu

THANK YOU
The K-State MANRRS chapter and the College of Agriculture Diversity Programs Office would like to thank all of those who contributed to the Thanksgiving Collection Box. The items collected will be presented to the Flint Hills Bread Basket to be given to our sponsored family. Now that Thanksgiving is over, we still have Christmas to worry about. We’re going to host yet another collection effort for Christmas and we ask you for your help again in making this holiday season cheerful for others. We hope to be able to support multiple families this holiday, so we’re calling for help from everyone! Together we can make this a reality. Thanks again to everyone for all the assistance. Safe and Happy Holiday Wishes to you all! --Zelia Holloway zwh@ksu.edu

KANSAS YOUTH CAN JOIN NATIONAL YOUTH PARTICIPATION SURVEY
Youth, ages 12-18, are encouraged to anonymously log their out-of-school time activities and preferences on the National Youth Participation Survey available at: http://agexted.cas.psu.edu/fcs/dp/survey/participation/survey.cfm .

The 20 minute web-based survey, which is featured in the Fall, 2004 issue of Harvard’s Evaluation Exchange, is being conducted by Arizona University and Pennsylvania State University researchers with sponsorship from the USDA/AES NC-1002 Out-of-School Time Project. Completed surveys will be accepted into 2005 with national reports being developed and distributed throughout the coming year. Youth-serving organizations can also facilitate completion of the survey during their regular meetings and programs. Instructions for those organizations with parental consent forms, approved by the Pennsylvania State University Institutional Review Board, are available at the previously listed website.

For more information, contact Daniel Perkins, Pennsylvania State University, dfp102@psu.edu , or Elaine Johannes, ejohanne@oznet.ksu.edu .  --Elaine Johannes

INFORMATION ARRIVING!
Weekly packets sent to departments and outlying offices last Friday were stuffed full of information about publication orders.

1. For the first time, each office will be receiving a list of publications available for "print-on-demand" orders. Please note the gold-colored section, labeled "Save this List!" These items may be ordered any time for delivery in about a week. They will not be listed on any other order form, so it is important to save the list and use it to place orders for these items. Our goal is to make most of our inventory available on demand within the next two years, using the quarterly order forms only for items that require substantial production time.

The list will be electronically updated monthly, but a new printed copy will be mailed only once every six months. For current information about which publications are available on demand, see our Catalog Website at: www.oznet.ksu.edu/catalog . For PDF copies of the publications themselves, go to the Library site at: www.oznet.ksu.edu/library . Note that the Library site is searchable by title, publication number, topic or author.

2. The March 2005 New/Revised Publications Order Form and the 2005 Second Quarter Order Form are also included in this week's packet. Orders are due by January 3, 2005. (Remember that campus offices will be closed from 5 p.m., December 23, until 8 a.m., January 3.) Again, please avoid faxing copies of the quarterly form, since our fax machine is not suited for heavy activity with multiple pages. If you must fax an order, please be sure each page is clearly labeled with your office location and phone/fax numbers.

Pesticide Applicator Manuals
The Private Pesticide Applicator Manual, MF531, is in production. We have found a way to reprint the publication in a more cost-effective manner – a cost of $4.60 per copy for internal customers, rather than $9.60. Because this publication is no longer funded by the Kansas Department of Agriculture, clients will be charged the cost of production. The new production method will result in notebook-punched and shrink-wrapped copies, rather than the saddle-stitched booklet previously produced. We expect that the manual will be revised within the next year, but will continue to produce the current version until the revision is complete. Thanks for your understanding regarding this change. --Nancy Zimmerli nancyz@ksu.edu
