IN THIS ISSUE... ...Word
from the Associate Director - Extension and Applied Research WORD FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH The strategic plan for the future of the Cooperative Extension mission of K-State Research & Extension is beginning to take shape, http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/strategic_planning/ . My sincere thanks to the 34 member planning committee for the work they poured out in bringing forth a series of recommendations and action steps. The committee was asked to focus on the question of "What will Kansas Cooperative Extension need to look like to be relevant, sustainable, and offer quality services and programming into the future?" They were asked to be comprehensive in their recommendations. Over the next several weeks, I will highlight the draft recommendations through this Tuesday Letter. I am going to be encouraging you to engage with those interested stakeholders and constituents to talk about any and all the recommendations. I hope you will study and think through the system-wide implications of acting on each of the recommendations. Then, I hope you will provide feedback and wisdom on the recommendations and appropriate steps needed to move forward as an organization. One of the first places where we will be presenting the draft strategic plan recommendations will be to local Extension Board members and agents at Area Partnership Meetings later this month. That, too, will be a time when you will have opportunity to share what you believe needs urgent attention, and what concerns or suggestions you may have regarding the recommendations. --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@oznet.ksu.edu
FIRST AID AND CPR TRAINING FOR AGENTS AND
SPECIALISTS Furthermore, some activities occur outdoors or in farm environments where mishaps are more common. It is important that we have someone present at every Extension event who is trained in first aid and CPR. With this in mind, the Area Directors and I are asking that all Extension faculty complete an approved one-day first aid and CPR training course and keep their training current for the duration of employment. The purpose of this training is not to make you a medical expert, but simply to give you the confidence to recognize the seriousness of an incident and manage the situation appropriately until emergency services arrive. To make this as easy as possible, each area office will coordinate a series of training classes each year. We would like each area and county office to send at least half of their agents and specialists to be trained in 2005, with the balance trained in 2006. Retraining will be required every two years thereafter. Extension Administration will cover the cost of the training sessions sponsored through the area offices. If you are not able to attend any of these sessions, you may be able to arrange training through your local Red Cross or American Heart Association. You may also locate a class by calling your local fire department or the transportation supervisor at your school district. If you arrange training through one of these organizations, your Area Director is prepared to reimburse up to $22 per person for training fees to an approved one-day course from Red Cross, American Heart Association, Medic First Aid, or National Safety Council, providing the course includes hands-on training and results in a certificate of completion. You will want to contact the area office prior to taking that training to assure that you will have the proper paperwork to receive the reimbursement for that training. Our clientele and program participants count on us to keep our events safe. Knowing how to respond in the event of a medical emergency is an important step in maintaining their continued confidence. Thank you in advance for your cooperation. --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@oznet.ksu.edu

STRATEGIC PLANNING INFORMATION POSTED These recommendations and the primary ideas that were suggested regarding how to implement them will be utilized to guide and direct the discussions with Extension agents and members of the Program Development Committees in the Partnership meetings scheduled this January with KSRE Extension administration. These recommendations are also important to all of us in Extension as we discuss and plan for ways to improve our methods and enhance the outcomes of our work. Thank you to Gloria Holcomb, Linda Sleichter, and all those who added
to the success of this process.
