WORD FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH
The State Extension Advisory Council (SEAC) met in Topeka on Thursday and Friday of last week. Part of the purpose in meeting there was to give SEAC members the opportunity to advocate for K-State Research & Extension with legislators. It was also an opportunity to meet a few of our partnering state agency contacts to gain a perspective from those individuals on the importance of these partnerships and future opportunities. Judging from feedback given by the SEAC members, those objectives were effectively accomplished.

On Thursday evening, the SEAC members participated in a dinner meeting where selected extension agents gave a very brief overview of priority extension programming taking place in Wyandotte, Johnson, Douglas, and Shawnee Counties. A total of nine faculty from those four counties made brief presentations.

Through this communication I want to publicly thank Al Davis, Phil Sell, Lisa Martin, Cindy Evans, Laurie Chandler, Chiquita Miller, Terri Bookless, Eugene Lanham, and Susan Krumm. This group of extension professionals provided an outstanding overview of selected high quality, priority, Extension educational programs reaching the target audiences under their leadership. Evident in their presentations was the background/needs assessment that went into each program (with a capital P), the in-depth logic model planning that had taken place to design the educational processes, the partnering among agencies and organizations to increase the impact, and the evaluative measures being taken to provide evidence towards intended outcomes/impact and needs for future programming. The passion and commitment to serve the needs of people living in their counties were clearly evident in their presentations. I applaud their communication to the SEAC, and look forward to the opportunities I have to learn about more of the excellent extension programming that you have going in your respective roles across the KSRE system. --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@oznet.ksu.edu

USE OF MAIL AND E-MAIL FOR PRIVATE INTEREST
I want to remind everyone that we cannot use the K-State Research & Extension mail or e-mail resources to distribute private, for-profit sales information. This time of year it is common to get sale bills from individuals who are selling livestock to 4-H and FFA youth. Some 4-H Clubs and Youth Councils may also be interested in holding an event where individuals might offer livestock for sale to those youth participating in the 4-H livestock project.

K-State Research & Extension cannot preferentially provide a mailing or e-mailing service for these private entities to help market the products or services they provide. If we provide such service to any one such entity, it becomes our obligation to provide that to EVERY entity wishing to sell that product. If a Club or Council wishes to hold an event, as indicated above, the event must be openly advertised to all potential consignees without preference. Any announcement of such an event must clearly indicate that this is an open consignment and how an individual can consign their products for sale in conjunction with that event. Experience suggests the best bet is to simply avoid sponsoring such events. Allow the County Fair Board or some other private entity to organize and publicize such an event. Through your newsletters you can identify entities having a product for sale and how individuals can get in touch with these entities. In doing so, be sure and allow EVERYONE wishing to sell such products the same opportunity within your newsletters to make such announcements. And, you will want to include a disclaimer statement that says you are in no way endorsing the use of this supplier as superior to any other supplier.

Hopefully, this is clear, but if not you can discuss this further with an area director, assistant director, or myself. --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@oznet.ksu.edu

GROWING GROWERS TRAINING PROGRAM SETS MONTHLY WORKSHOPS FOR MARKET FARMERS
A program of monthly workshops and farm tours to provide beginning and more experienced market gardeners with an introduction to the diverse skills needed to be successful is planned for 2005. All workshops are designed to have a strongly applied emphasis, and typically include presentations by successful growers and visits to working farms, in addition to presentations by extension specialists.

The first workshop will be on Soil Building for Vegetable and Fruit Farmers, and will be held on Saturday, March 12, at the Leavenworth County Extension office. It will include presentations on soil management, the Soil Food Web, cover cropping and crop rotations for soil building, and on composting. It will also include a farm tour to Paul Conway’s farm to see the results of a strong soil building program. Additional workshops to be held during the season are: Plant Production for Vegetable Farmers (April), Equipment Safety for Vegetable Growers (May), Postharvest Handling (June), Taste your vegetables (July), Fruit production and Eco-tourism tour (August), Diseases, pests and weeds (August), Integrating Meat and Dairy into Vegetables (September), and Farm Business Management (October). Workshops are mainly held on Monday afternoons to accommodate the schedules of market gardeners, and a few are held to allow more in-depth coverage.

Registration information is available at http://www.growinggrowers.org/ .

STATE FAIR 4-H PHOTOGRAPHY DISPLAY MAT BOARD DIMENSIONS CHANGE
The 4-H Photography Action Team has changed the dimensions of the mat board for 4-H photography entry and display at the Kansas State Fair. The new dimensions will be 11 X 12.5 inches. The reasons for this change have to do with the new display racks for the remodeled 4-H Exhibit Building and to improve the quality of the displayed pictures.

The previous size boards may be converted by removing 1.5 inches from the long (14") side. Distribution will be resizing the boards they have and have said they will resize boards bought from them if they are brought to them on campus. They also suggest any local print shop with a commercial card cutter could make the needed cut of the boards. If you have any questions, please contact Rod Buchele, rbuchele@oznet.ksu.edu , the State 4-H Liaison to the Photo Action Team. --Rod Buchele
