WORD FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH
Your Extension Administrative team will be meeting later this week in a retreat setting. The purpose will be to take a global look at the Extension organization and set forth the necessary planning to accomplish the highest priority goals of Extension's strategic plan. Specifically, we will be planning around such topics as staffing for the future, creating great volunteers, building towards a stronger community-based look and feel for KSRE, building a stronger professional development track for excellence as an extension educator, resourcing for the financial security in the future, and structuring of the roles and responsibilities of the administrative team to help fulfill the strategic plan. Ultimately, this is to focus on a track of strenghtening the future for K-State Research and Extension.

The strategic planning process and the subsequent meetings and feedback we have received on the plan have been insightful. It is time now to set some priorities and process in place to focus on the recommendations of that plan. The strategic plan lays out priorities that cannot be accomplished without change in how we do business. Just because the strategic plan says that program development committees and executive boards need to be more engaged won't make it happen.

It is through the information, feedback, and the recommendations themselves, that the extension administrative team is going to construct plans and priorities to be implemented over the next several years that will strengthen and enhance the role of K-State Research & Extension in improving the quality of life and economic well-being of the people living in Kansas. If you have thoughts to share... share them with me or any of the administrative leadership team! --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@oznet.ksu.edu

NEW WEBSITE PROVIDES ADDITIONAL WAY TO COMMUNICATE WITH FRED CHOLICK
We need your feedback on a new website that will provide employees an opportunity to ask questions directly of Fred Cholick, at your convenience.

'Ask the Dean' is still in development, but is available for the next two weeks to K-State Research and Extension employees at http://intranet.oznet.ksu.edu/askthedean/ .

Note that this site is on the K-State Intranet. Use your Oznet username and password to access the site. Then, send us feedback for further improving this site. Initially, this site will be available internally only; the long-range plans include possibly opening it to the general public.

Send feedback regarding this site to Pat Melgares at melgares@oznet.ksu.edu . We will incorporate appropriate changes leading up to full release of the site this spring. --Pat Melgares

GOVERNOR PROCLAIMS MARCH 13-19 KANSAS EXTENSION LIVING WELL WEEK
As part of the National Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences' effort to market extension family and consumer science programs, Governor Sebelius has proclaimed March 13-19, 2005 as Kansas Extension Living Well Week. The marketing slogan, "Raising Kids, Eating Right, Spending Smart, Living Well," has been developed to promote the focus of Extension Family and Consumer Science programs.

As part of this campaign, a website which represents all Cooperative Extension programs has been established. This data base of information for consumers also provides a link back to state extension programs. Do book mark the site, www.learningandlivingwell.org , for your future reference. --Diane Nielson dnielson@oznet.ksu.edu

KANSAS TO CELEBRATE AG DAY MARCH 21
Kansas Secretary of Agriculture Adrian Polansky invites all Kansans to join the state's agricultural groups and Governor Kathleen Sebelius in celebrating Kansas Agriculture Day, Monday, March 21, at the Statehouse.

To mark the event, Governor Sebelius will sign a proclamation declaring March 21 Kansas Agriculture Day. She also will meet the winners of the Kansas Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom's annual agricultural art contest for kindergarten through sixth grade students.

The focus of this year's event will extend beyond food production and include information about biobased products, including fuels like ethanol and biodiesel.

"Kansas continues to steadily expand its biobased fuel production, which is good for Kansas farmers and our environment," Polansky said. "Clean-burning, renewable fuels like ethanol promote better air quality and increase the value of grains grown by Kansas farmers."

The day-long celebration is a collaboration of the Kansas Department of Agriculture and the Kansas Department of Commerce's agriculture marketing division. Kansas Ag Day is a local event held in conjunction with National Ag Week to raise awareness of the significance of U.S. agriculture in our national and global economies. National Ag Week runs from March 20 to 26.

Representatives from the state's agricultural organizations will have displays on the first floor rotunda from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Exhibitors include: Kansas Department of Agriculture; Kansas Department of Commerce; Kansas Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom; Kansas Farm Bureau; The National Agricultural Center and Hall of Fame; Kansas Soybean Commission/Association; Kansas Corn/Sorghum Commission/Association; KSU Research and Extension; Kansas AgriWomen; Kansas Agritourism Project; ICM Inc.; United Bio Energy; and KSU Department of Grain Science and International Grains Program. --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@oznet.ksu.edu

ANNUAL COMMUNITY IMPROVEMENT ENROLLMENT APPROACHING
Are you working with a community that could benefit from being involved with the Kansas PRIDE program? The program year runs from July 1 to June 30 of each year, so interested communities should enroll by April 15. To enroll, we ask a community to complete a form that identifies community contacts. In addition, we ask the community to submit a resolution of support from their local government. Once a community takes these first steps, we will work together to help them organize and set goals for community improvement.

The Kansas PRIDE program can provide resources to help citizens organize for community improvement, and provides recognition for community success!

If you know of a community that is interested, please contact the Kansas PRIDE office and we will help you navigate to the forms. For more information, visit www.kansasprideprogram.ksu.edu  or e-mail Mary  Mathiot at mmathiot@oznet.ksu.edu . --Dan Kahl  dkahl@oznet.ksu.edu

PUBLICATIONS/PRODUCTION SERVICES UPDATE
Order Most 4-H Publications Now
The 2005 Third quarter Publications Order Form AND the annual 4-H CCS Order Form were sent March 11. Please note that orders must be received by April 1, along with orders for items listed on the June 2005 New Publications Order Form, sent one week earlier. Items on the CCS Order Form are ordered from Minnesota, so we must be strict about order deadlines to qualify for bulk discounts.

Please remember to look under both the "Allocation" section and the "Cost Recovery" section on quarterly order forms for items important to your programs. (Although ALL items are eligible for purchase using county allocations, our administrative and accounting requirements necessitate separate listings.) In each section, items are listed by publication category, department and then alphabetically by title.

Also, remember to check the print-on-demand (POD) listings online at: www.oznet.ksu.edu/catalog . View the "print-friendly version" and click on the "POD" button for a complete listing. (You can also search by publication number, topic, title or author.) Many 4-H items have been moved to "on-demand" printing. Remember to check back frequently, since new items are moved to the POD section every month.

More Order Form Reminders
The June 2005 New Publication Order Form lists a number of major revisions to 4-H publications. Particularly note S-133, "Kansas 4-H Horse Show Rule Book," for which we have more than 200 copies on backorder. We will cancel those backorders to assure that you receive the revised publication as soon as it is ready. Please order now, based on the total number of copies you will need for this year's shows.

Please note that the Third Quarter Order Form was inadvertently printed with an item that is being deadfiled. We will not be accepting orders for 4H-476, "Ideas for Using 4-H Officer Training Materials," and all backorders will be canceled.

Order Accounting Updates
Please keep the deadline in mind while placing orders. If possible, it's best to avoid faxing an order of more than a page or two. Our fax machine has a limited memory, so long faxes with multiple pages may have to be re-sent.

Remember than you may place orders by e-mail through: orderpub@lists.oznet.ksu.edu , or you may order online at: http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/library/order.htm .

When ordering by any method, be sure to include your office name, customer number and whether you are ordering from a specific order form (June, Third Quarter, etc.) to be sure your order is treated as a preorder and receives priority fulfillment. We are preparing to revise the online form. Although it does not show a  place for customer number or month/quarter of the order form, you may indicate that information in the "title" area until the revision is done. --Nancy Zimmerli nancyz@ksu.edu

SPRING 2005 HORSE PROJECT CHANGES
The following are changes that were made at the February 12, 2005 meeting of the 4-H Horse Action Team at Rock Springs. Please respond to me or Jim Adams with any questions regarding these changes.

Kansas State Fair 4-H Horse Show changes:
Trail and halter are now District qualifying classes for the State Fair. The exception to this is Yearling Halter will be an invitational class.

Sample trail patterns for district shows will be available via Julie Voge.

Check State Fair Book for new State Horse Show schedule Friday-Sunday (September 16-18). 4-H portion of State Fair Book will be posted on the State 4-H website soon!

Level Testing changes:
4-H’ers will no longer be required to level test prior to competing in the State Horse Judging Contest or Panorama. This change will take effect in 2005 for the Judging Contest and will be effective in 2006 for Panorama.

Level Testing Reminder For District and State 4-H Horse Shows:
The Kansas 4-H Horse Standard of Excellence Level Testing Program was developed to further educate Kansas youth about safety, health, nutrition and management of horses. This program was not designed to eliminate youth from competing in events. Leaders and agents should take care to accommodate special needs cases in which the child may have a disability and need someone to read the exam to them. Counties should provide an impartial reader for those 4-H’ers requesting it. Counties may require level testing for their own purposes as they see fit, but should remain accommodating to the 4-H’er in taking exams.

Out of State 4-H Horse Judging Teams:
In 2005, the Kansas 4-H team going to the All American Quarter Horse Congress in Columbus, Ohio will be a composite team selected from the top ten individuals in the Kansas State 4-H Horse Judging Contest. Selection of the team and arrangements will be under the guidance of Julie Voge.

We will continue to send the top county/district teams to other out of state contests such as AQHA Youth World, Denver and Morgan Grand Nationals. --Kelsey Nordyke knordyke@oznet.ksu.edu
