IN THIS ISSUE... ...Word
from the Associate Director - Extension and Applied Research WORD FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH Your Extension Administrative team will be meeting later this week in a retreat setting. The purpose will be to take a global look at the Extension organization and set forth the necessary planning to accomplish the highest priority goals of Extension's strategic plan. Specifically, we will be planning around such topics as staffing for the future, creating great volunteers, building towards a stronger community-based look and feel for KSRE, building a stronger professional development track for excellence as an extension educator, resourcing for the financial security in the future, and structuring of the roles and responsibilities of the administrative team to help fulfill the strategic plan. Ultimately, this is to focus on a track of strenghtening the future for K-State Research and Extension. The strategic planning process and the subsequent meetings and feedback we have received on the plan have been insightful. It is time now to set some priorities and process in place to focus on the recommendations of that plan. The strategic plan lays out priorities that cannot be accomplished without change in how we do business. Just because the strategic plan says that program development committees and executive boards need to be more engaged won't make it happen. It is through the information, feedback, and the recommendations themselves, that the extension administrative team is going to construct plans and priorities to be implemented over the next several years that will strengthen and enhance the role of K-State Research & Extension in improving the quality of life and economic well-being of the people living in Kansas. If you have thoughts to share... share them with me or any of the administrative leadership team! --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@oznet.ksu.edu

KANSAS TO CELEBRATE AG DAY MARCH 21 To mark the event, Governor Sebelius will sign a proclamation declaring March 21 Kansas Agriculture Day. She also will meet the winners of the Kansas Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom's annual agricultural art contest for kindergarten through sixth grade students. The focus of this year's event will extend beyond food production and include information about biobased products, including fuels like ethanol and biodiesel. "Kansas continues to steadily expand its biobased fuel production, which is good for Kansas farmers and our environment," Polansky said. "Clean-burning, renewable fuels like ethanol promote better air quality and increase the value of grains grown by Kansas farmers." The day-long celebration is a collaboration of the Kansas Department of Agriculture and the Kansas Department of Commerce's agriculture marketing division. Kansas Ag Day is a local event held in conjunction with National Ag Week to raise awareness of the significance of U.S. agriculture in our national and global economies. National Ag Week runs from March 20 to 26. Representatives from the state's agricultural organizations will have displays on the first floor rotunda from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Exhibitors include: Kansas Department of Agriculture; Kansas Department of Commerce; Kansas Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom; Kansas Farm Bureau; The National Agricultural Center and Hall of Fame; Kansas Soybean Commission/Association; Kansas Corn/Sorghum Commission/Association; KSU Research and Extension; Kansas AgriWomen; Kansas Agritourism Project; ICM Inc.; United Bio Energy; and KSU Department of Grain Science and International Grains Program. --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@oznet.ksu.edu

PUBLICATIONS/PRODUCTION SERVICES UPDATE Please remember to look under both the "Allocation" section and the "Cost Recovery" section on quarterly order forms for items important to your programs. (Although ALL items are eligible for purchase using county allocations, our administrative and accounting requirements necessitate separate listings.) In each section, items are listed by publication category, department and then alphabetically by title. Also, remember to check the print-on-demand (POD) listings online at: www.oznet.ksu.edu/catalog . View the "print-friendly version" and click on the "POD" button for a complete listing. (You can also search by publication number, topic, title or author.) Many 4-H items have been moved to "on-demand" printing. Remember to check back frequently, since new items are moved to the POD section every month. More Order Form Reminders Please note that the Third Quarter Order Form was inadvertently printed with an item that is being deadfiled. We will not be accepting orders for 4H-476, "Ideas for Using 4-H Officer Training Materials," and all backorders will be canceled. Order Accounting Updates
When ordering by any method, be sure to include your office name, customer number and whether you are ordering from a specific order form (June, Third Quarter, etc.) to be sure your order is treated as a preorder and receives priority fulfillment. We are preparing to revise the online form. Although it does not show a place for customer number or month/quarter of the order form, you may indicate that information in the "title" area until the revision is done. --Nancy Zimmerli nancyz@ksu.edu
