IN THIS ISSUE... ...Word
from the Associate Director - Extension and Applied Research WORD FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH This past week I spent four days in Washington DC with a delegation of Extension Agent and State Extension Advisory Council (SEAC) leadership at the Public Issues Leadership Development Conference. Those attending were Richard Fechter, Glenda Keller, Jodi Besthorn, and Trudy Rice on behalf of their respective state agent associations. Chuck Otte was there due to his national officer status with the NACAA. Sondra Tolle, Ray Flickner, Doug Wolters, and Kent Ochsner were there on behalf of the State Extension Advisory Council. The conference focused on building an understanding of the federal budgeting processes and points of influence available in setting priorities. We were also introduced to the developments taking place with e-Extension. e-Extension is about developing a national network of resources, information, and educational programs to be delivered across the internet in support of local Extension program delivery. We will be hearing more about this development in the coming year. If you are interested, you can go to http://intranet.extension.org/ and look through the information and minutes for upcoming calls for proposals, etc. On Tuesday, the delegation made visits to each of our Congressional offices to visit with staffers, thanking them for their support of the overall agricultural budget, and specifically for their support to that part of the ag appropriation directed to Cooperative Extension. Individuals told stories of the impact of Extension on local constituents. The SEAC delegates told how Extension was important and impacted them in their lives. Numerous other topics were discussed over the course of the conference, and all of us brought home a wealth of good information to share and incorporate into our thinking for the future of Cooperative Extension in Kansas. In my biased opinion, I know you would have been proud to know that this group of Extension Agents and SEAC delegates were there representing K-State Research & Extension among our state partners from across the country. --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@oznet.ksu.edu
STATUS OF FACULTY POSITIONS
WATERSHED
CONFLICT MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP The CSREES Heartland Water Quality Coordination Initiative will host a WATERSHED CONFLICT MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP, June 8-10, 2005, at the Lied Conference Center in Nebraska City, Nebraska. This workshop will be an excellent opportunity to learn more about how Extension staff can better support and assist communities in managing conflict as they work through the process of restoring and protecting surface water resources. This topic is especially relevant to county agents as Extension expands its role in supporting local residents as they develop Watershed Restoration and Protection Strategies (WRAPS) around the state. The keynote speaker and facilitator will be Steve Smutko, Extension Specialist and Director of the Natural Resources Leadership Institute at North Carolina State University. The workshop will also offer an opportunity to interact/network with other Extension agents from Missouri, Iowa, and Nebraska. A nominal registration fee of $30 will cover ALL expenses, including lodging and meals at the conference center plus mileage reimbursement. For more information, or to register, please contact Robert Wilson in the Office of Local Government at 785-532-7823. or rmwilson@k-state.edu . --Robert Wilson

ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES Provide administrative leadership to counties/districts to include Johnson, Wyandotte, Douglas, Shawnee, Riley, Central Kansas, River Valley, Sedgwick, and Reno. Provide leadership as a resource and support to Area Directors in the development of districting models or other forms of agreements that enhance cooperation and strengthen the delivery of educational programs across county lines. Provide leadership for organizational guidelines, policy, and centralized functions in support of out-state local operations to be identified by the assistant director in cooperation with area directors and overall administrative team. Assists the Associate Director with guidance and policy development and implementation within the framework of K-State Research & Extension. Provide leadership in professional development training towards creating effective boards and councils. Team with assistant directors for programs and administrative leaders and coordinators towards improving the practice of scholarship in Extension. With these changes in administrative support to local Extension units, one can rightly assume some adjustments in the Extension Administrator serving specific local units in eastern and central Kansas. Letters will be going out soon to those Board Chairs in counties affected by such change to prepare them for the transition to a new Extension administrator in support of their local Council. --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@oznet.ksu.edu
