WORD FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH
I imagine that almost every one of us was out last night enjoying the aerial displays of color, shape, and noise to celebrate the independence of this United States of America. Our thanks and joy go out to all of those men and women who made our independence possible, and for the men and women today who continue to serve our nation through the military to preserve and protect our independence and to make this a better, safer world in which to live.

So, could there be any connection to watching some great fireworks and Extension? With each year of watching fireworks, we anticipate seeing some of our favorites and have an expectation of seeing something new, interesting, and more exciting. Little do we think about what goes into the development and planning for such a grand display of fireworks. If you happened to read or watch the documentaries on how pyrotechnic chemists design and construct each of the shells to create the shapes, colors, and sparkles at detonation, you have some appreciation for the creativity that goes into developing a fireworks show. Then there is planning for the design of the show to provide the right mix of displays that hold crowd interest leading to the grand finale. Yet while there is all that work that goes into the creation, planning, and implementation, most people only appreciate the instance of the explosions and the show.

So goes it with high quality, relevant Extension work. All the creativity, planning, and implementation behind the scenes most assuredly goes unnoticed and often unmentioned. Yet, it is with that creativity, design, and careful planning that great programs get implemented with a finale of great learning through Extension.

Take home message? Don't ever believe that a great Extension learning experience just happens without the work of creativity, planning, and implementation. And, know that the fireworks experts are today evaluating what worked and what areas need improvement to make for a better show in the coming year. --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@ksu.edu

K-STATE RESEARCH AND EXTENSION ANNUAL CONFERENCE DATES - 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008
This fall's K-State Research and Extension Annual Conference will take place in the K-State Student Union, October 17-19.

When we considered moving the Annual Conference to January, we booked January dates for a couple years into the future. However, based on your input, it was decided to go back to October. By that time, October and November 2006 dates and rooms were booked in the Student Union. At that point, we could either go into December, which is not an option with all the end of semester issues, or we could move back into the last of September, which isn't perfect, but hopefully, workable.

Thus, future KSRE Annual Conference dates are:

For 2006 - September 25-28
For 2007 - October 15-18
For 2008 - October 20-23

The Annual Conference Planning Committee has a great conference ready to go for this fall and we look forward to seeing everyone at the conference. --Curtis Kastner, Chair; Paul Hartman, Vice Chair; of the 2005 KSRE Annual Conference
