IN THIS ISSUE... ...Word
from the Associate Director - Extension and Applied Research WORD FROM THE
ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH Themes that came out of the Extension discussion emphasized the importance of strong local support to convey the consistent, powerful message of the importance of strong funding to provide for the valuable work that meets the needs of improving the quality of life and standard of living for the people of the state. I translate that into building a strong network of local councils and boards who know us well and who we listen to carefully to provide for the focus and direction of our educational initiatives. We also need these boards and councils to help us listen and understand the priorities of our state and local stakeholders so that we can tie the work we are about to the priorities of our stakeholders. A second key message was that of working towards one mission, one message so that we speak as a system. Development and communication among all our employees and our elected boards and councils is needed so that everyone has an appreciation and understanding of this system. The challenge and opportunity remains to strengthen our funding streams of federal, state, and local appropriations. The Strategic Plan for the Extension Mission of K-State Research & Extension is currently in press. When it arrives at your desk, you will note that our task force identified many of these same themes for our future focus and direction. We are diligently working towards an effective communication link through administration and among board and council members to begin the development process for all of us. We believe we are building a system of communication and training that will be sustainable in support of the constant turnover of council and board members. This meeting re-emphasizes to me the importance and urgency of our accomplishing this goal within our strategic plan. --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@ksu.edu

K-STATE LAUNCHES
NEW TUITION REDUCTION PROGRAM FOR EMPLOYEE SPOUSES
AND DEPENDENTS Provost Duane Nellis announced the new program. "Leaders from Faculty Senate and Classified Senate have worked together in a collegial way with the K-State administration to develop a new program of tuition reduction for spouses and dependents of full-time K-State employees," Nellis said. "We have set aside $400,000 in private funding to pay for the program. Each applicant may receive up to three credit hours of tuition per semester. "I am pleased we were able to move this important benefit forward as an additional way to support our full-time employee dependents and spouses," Nellis said. Spouses, sons or daughters of full-time
employees at K-State's Manhattan and Salina campus are eligible for the
program. Dependents of employees of affiliated organizations such as the
Alumni Association, Athletics, Child Development, Foundation, Kansas
State University Research Foundation, Student Publications and K-State
Student Union are not eligible. Tuition reduction applies only to
on-campus courses taken in Manhattan or Salina, and does not apply to
courses offered through the Division of Continuing Education. "Faculty Senate is delighted that the tuition reduction program is ready for implementation," said Tom Herald, Faculty Senate president and professor in animal sciences and industry. "There are a number of individuals in central administration, Classified Senate and Faculty Senate who deserve thanks for their commitment to this endeavor. The tuition reduction program will immediately affect faculty recruitment and retention." Applications and more information about the K-State spouse/dependent grant are available in the student financial aid office in Fairchild Hall, or on the Web at: http://www.k-state.edu/sfa/spousedepgrant . K-State also offers a tuition assistance program for employees, both classified and unclassified, to help cover tuition expenses.
