WORD FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH
I want to highlight again the opportunity you have to recognize your outstanding colleagues and peers within K-State Research & Extension. There is no better way to express your appreciation for the work and accomplishments of others than to nominate those individuals for recognition. With Annual Conference coming up, you have several categories of awards available to consider in nominating your colleagues. I encourage you to review the award categories below and nominate deserving colleague(s) by August 29, 2005.

BUILDER AWARDS - These awards recognize individuals who have exhibited extra energy and creativity over a number of years in building new programs, audiences or institutions within K-State Research and Extension.

DIVERSITY AWARD - K-State Research and Extension is committed to an emphasis on diversity in programming, workforce and relationships with other organizations. In order to recognize individuals who have embraced this vision, a Diversity Award will be presented.

TEAM AWARD - The Team Award acknowledges outstanding efforts by a group of individuals addressing one of the Core Mission Themes of K-State Research and Extension.

MENTORING AWARD - K-State Research and Extension faculty who have been employed for two years or less are encouraged to nominate a mentor who has helped them and others achieve higher performance and productivity. One award will be presented to a county/district faculty mentor and one to an area/state faculty mentor.

Nominations should include the following:

1) Name, title, address and phone number of the nominee(s) and nominator.

FACULTY/STAFF CHANGES IN CAMPUS PHONE BOOK
Each year, Student Publications Inc., strives to give the K-State community an accurate Campus Phone Book. Human Resources (HR) provides the faculty/staff information. Work on the 2005-2006 Campus Phone Book is currently in progress. Information that will be printed in the phone book will include the employee's name, campus address and phone, business title or job title, home address and home phone. The employee's KSU e-mail address will also be included and will be provided by Computing & Network Services (CNS). Employee Update Sheets were mailed out to departments, including area offices of K-State Research and Extension, for distribution on July 19, 2005.

Employees should review the information provided on the update sheets and return the forms to their departmental personnel specialist by August 1. Employee update sheets with changes should be returned to HR for processing as soon as possible, but no later than August 8.

Note: If there are no changes, please do not return update sheets to HR. DIVERSITY PROGRAMS OFFICE LISTS ACTIVITIES
As you know, our summer is fleeting fast and preparation for the fall is approaching. For the month of July,  the Diversity Programs Office's schedule has been filled with recruitment, spreading the word about diversity in Agriculture to schools and programs such as Barton Community College and Kansas City (KS) Community College.

Also, in a collaborative effort with College of Agriculture's Ambassadors, we hosted a workshop titled "Agriculture: The Perfect Tee" for the 2005 National The First Tee Academy on July 20, 2005. On July 31, we presented to the 2005 Rotary Youth Leadership Awards' Seminar at Camp Aldrich and the seminar's title was "Discovering the Cultural YOU!" This program audience was student leaders from Northwest Kansas. The main focus of this workshop was to increase awareness of diversity and the many facets and opportunities in the College of Agriculture at Kansas State University. The next focus for The Diversity Programs Office and K-State MANRRS is welcoming the new students, the Activities Carnival on August 26, and the Watermelon Feed held on August 30. The anticipation is to inform individuals about what understanding diversity can do to improve classrooms and office settings. Because with understanding comes power and a stronger community to follow. When you stop by the office, please welcome Reneé Jones, our student worker whose major is Park and Management/Conservation. She is also the 2005-06 K-State MANRRS Chapter President.

As usual, if you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact Dr. Zelia Z. Wiley, Assistant Dean for Diversity at zwh@ksu.edu  or 785-532-5793. Enjoy the rest of the summer! --Dr. Zelia Z. Wiley
