WORD FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH
State Extension Advisory Council (SEAC) will be meeting in Hays later this month. As a reminder, the SEAC is an elected body of current and past Extension Board Chairs from across the state. This advisory group includes the following individuals: Jason King (Grant), Phil Sandelin (Pratt), Steve Rome (Stevens), Kent Oschner (Greeley), Dwight McReynolds (Post Rock), Bill Walker (Post Rock), Doug Walters (Rawlins), Ramie Wasinger (Ellis), JoAnn Murray (Atchison), Penny Donaldson (Doniphan), Bill Garrison (River Valley), Sondra Tolle (McPherson), Kevin Journagen (Shawnee), Rod George (Central Kansas), Ray Flickner (Sedgwick), Stan Larson (Douglas), Don Montgomery (Osage), Bob Gottlob (Cowley), Mark Parker (Labette), John Ericson (Bourbon), Patric Connor (Kingman), and Marvin Beesley (Gove).

Our meetings with SEAC generally include an afternoon and evening of tours and showcasing some of the K-State Research & Extension programs and facilities near the location of our meetings. At this meeting in Hays, we will take a look at the Ag Research Center and will hear about some key Extension programs happening in NW Kansas. We will also hear from Vance Ehmke, farmer and civic leader from Lane County, on his insights on key issues facing Western Kansas. The business meeting will be held at the Ellis County Extension Office to showcase that facility and staff.

Some discussions we will be having with the SEAC will include a report from the SEAC members who attended the Public Issues, Leadership Development Conference in Washington DC back in April, an overview of our progress on implementing the Extension Strategic Plan (hard copy is coming off the press this week), progress on hiring faculty, long term funding considerations, review of local staffing policies, development of marketing plans for local Extension units, and development of web-based resources and training modules for local Extension Board and PDC members. Many of these topics will generate discussion and feedback to the administrative team on priorities of the Extension Strategic Plan.

We also provide updates from the area and assistant directors on timely topics. And, we offer a time for the SEAC members to raise issues and ideas with your Extension administrative team.

The SEAC meets two times each year. We will be meeting again in February 2006 in Topeka where we can involve visits to the Capitol in our agenda.

If you have a SEAC delegate from your District or County, I hope you will touch base with that individual and encourage attendance at the upcoming meeting in Hays. SEAC members received a packet last week with all the details. If you have input you would like to provide for discussion with the SEAC, I also encourage you to contact an SEAC member or any one of the Extension Administrative Team. --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@ksu.edu

CENTENNIAL CORNER
Opening Centennial Ceremony Invitation and Details
As was noted in the August Tip Sheet Centennial Update, please be sure that all your 4-H members, families, leaders, alumni and staff are invited to participate in the Opening Ceremony by marching in the 4-H Parade.

You can use the following copy for your next newsletter.

"Please join us in kicking off the 4-H Centennial opening ceremony by marching in the 4-H Parade. Come wearing your 4-H logo clothing, and meet at Gottschalk Park at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, September 10, just inside the main gate of the State Fairgrounds, 20th and Poplar. Volunteers will be there to help line you up and give instructions. The 105 Centennial Candle bearers will lead off the parade at 10 a.m. You will follow as we march down the black top road, headed for the new 4-H Centennial Hall, chanting, "Heads-Heart-Hands-Health-Forever 4-H (clap, clap). This will be repeated as we march down the road.

The Fair will provide security at the crossroads we march. Once we get to the southeast entrance of the 4-H Centennial Hall, the candle bearers will have a reserved place to stand during the building dedication and Centennial ceremony. Other marchers are free to remain and listen and watch the official ribbon cutting and opening.

The ceremony will close with a roll call of each county, and their candle will be taken into the building and placed around the giant birthday cake. We will then all sing "Happy Birthday" to 4-H and a commemorative pin with the Power Cat and 4-H Clover will be handed out to all participants."  --Steve Fisher sfisher@oznet.ksu.edu
