WORD FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH
Competition is a way of life. Whether thinking of the obvious with sports, or maybe less obvious with academics, music, extra-curricular activities, or 4-H, youth are put into competitive situations at all ages. Competition pushes participants to do their best. And, then the times I have been in conversations regarding how some event went amok, and the solution being "if only we could do away with the adults." If you can think of yourself as an organizer, trainer, coach, fan, or in any way a participant in competitive events for youth, I hope you will read on and study the resources.

There is no right or wrong time in the year to bring up the topic of competitive events. Maybe it's a bit more on my mind with the upcoming state 4-H judging contests and shows. And, I was reminded of it when in Parade Magazine a couple weeks ago the article titled, "Whose Killing Kids Sports?" was published. That article pointed to a new program being launched in Maine called "Sports * Done Right,"  The Maine initiative focuses on a set of core principles, including good sportsmanship, discouragement of early specialization and the assurance that teams below the varsity level make it their mission to develop the skills of every child on every team, to promote a lifelong involvement with sports. I encourage you to read from both websites.

Closer to home, Nebraska 4-H has teamed up with The Nebraska Alumni Association to create an initiative called "Great Fans. Great Sports,"  I especially appreciate how they have defined a coach to include anyone involved in shaping the team or individual, including a Club Leader. They define sport to apply to sportsmanlike behavior of fans, participants, and leaders. It is built on the pillars of character and decision making tools of the Character Counts! program. I encourage you to take a look at their website in its early development stages.

All these sportsmanship efforts are in response to adults losing perspective of the needs kids have in participating, and needs adults have in winning. I would hope that 4-H Youth Development would be the leader among organizations hosting positive, healthy competition with its focus on great learning opportunities, and building the pillars of character : trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship among all who are involved, including the adults! We can do this if we will teach adults to adhere to the essential elements, of 4-H Youth Development. It really depends on adults to make a difference, and that begins with you and me.

Don't misunderstand my message. I believe in the need for healthy competition. And, I believe in the broadest possible participation for the advantage of the kids. This is all about a positive experience for youth. Therefore, we must strive for 100% compliance of adults to the pillars of character and adherence to the essential elements of 4-H youth development when they are participating in a 4-H event as coaches, volunteers, leaders, or fans. --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@ksu.edu

4-H PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENTS WANTED
The newly remodeled 4-H Centennial Hall has an excellent sound system, and we want to take advantage of its capabilities! We are looking for youth who have recorded or would be willing to record short PSAs about 4-H. We're going to mix these in with background music so we need lots of them. Members can talk about what they've learned in their project work, tell about service-learning activities, explain leadership or citizenship skills they've gained, trips or events they've been involved in, what they've learned from goal setting/judging contests/ etc. etc. The sky's the limit!!

The only requirements are that the PSAs are already in any electronic audio format, and that they be e-mailed to jwiebers@ksu.edu  no later than August 31. Messages may be any length, although shorter is preferred. We will reserve the right to select, edit, or exclude any audio file submitted. All 4-H members submitting a PSA must have a completed Kansas 4-H Participation Form on file in their local Extension Office authorizing the publicity release. --Justin Wiebers  jwiebers@ksu.edu
