WORD FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH
Planning is a cornerstone to effective team work and making progress on priorities. This past week I am aware of several groups coming together to think strategically and lay out priorities, identify a means to accomplish, and set forward plans for implementation.

This past Friday, K-State's central administration laid out goals and vision for Kansas State University in the coming years. The central theme continues to focus on becoming a top 10 Land Grant University. The challenge seems clear. In order to become top 10, we must work towards excellence with a well focused set of strategic goals. Across K-State Research & Extension we have identified our twelve long-term intended outcomes, and have plans behind each of those intended outcomes. My expectation is that when planning takes place on any major theme, we look to that five year plan as a guide to see where we should be headed, and then to look at the specific goals set forth in your planning session with respect to how your goals support moving towards achieving an intended outcome.

Working within K-State Research & Extension with its mission-oriented focus can make it difficult to focus on the most important high-impact programming. The difficulty comes with our constant touch with our clientele and listening to their questions and problems. It becomes even more important in your work to regain your focus and work towards your goals with all those interruptions from clientele. All the more reason to take the time to do quality planning towards a few key goals which will help the system to achieve those long-term intended outcomes.

To become a top 10 Land Grant University, K-State must be great in all its strategic priority areas, including the work of K-State Research & Extension. As quoted in the first line of the first chapter of Good to Great by Jim Collins, "Good is the enemy of great." Keep a focus and attention to your goals, and look for ways to strengthen your work towards an even greater impact.

Kansas State Fair is coming up this week. Please keep in mind, if you are working at the fair, be sure to proudly wear your name badge. --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@ksu.edu
