WORD FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH
In the spirit of professional development, I saw a recent letter from Jim Lindquist go out to agents under his administrative responsibility. I thought it useful to pass along this piece of info on sabbaticals to a wider group. Sabbatical leave is a benefit to faculty that should not be forgotten. Following are excerpts of his letter.

All requests for sabbatical leaves must be included in the University Budget in the fiscal year in which they are granted. The timetable for University Budget development makes it mandatory that we have applications for sabbatical leave by November 1 each year. Your advanced planning is necessary.

The days you request for current and accumulated annual leave at the beginning of your leave for study and the dates of your sabbatical leave must be indicated on your application, and they must be exact. (Leave Without Pay cannot be taken immediately following sabbatical leave. You must return to duty the day after your sabbatical leave expires.) Except in an emergency, no changes can be made after these are entered in the University Budget. Late applications cannot be considered.

If your application for sabbatical leave is for academic study, it will not be considered unless it is accompanied by a copy of the letter from the graduate school at the university you plan to attend giving you permission to enroll. It sometimes takes several months to obtain this approval. If you are interested in doing graduate work during the coming fiscal year, you should decide which university you would like to attend and secure approval by their graduate school immediately.

The sabbatical leave form, KSU 1-9, can be found by going to the K-State Research & Extension website, under Staff Corner, then choosing Intranet, and then selecting Administrative Documents. Details about sabbatical leave can be found by choosing "Instructions." Faculty are required to return to service for a period of at least one year. This policy also indicates that those who fail to remain for the full year of service shall refund that portion of sabbatical pay as represented by the portion of time they failed to serve.

If you have questions regarding sabbatical leave or seeking ideas for a more meaningful experience, don't hesitate to talk with your administrative supervisor. Time may be tight if you hadn't started planning at this time for the November 1 deadline, but it might be just right if planning for November 1, 2006! --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@ksu.edu

EXTENSION 4-H STAFF DEVELOPMENT SPECIALIST SEARCH
The initial search to fill the Extension 4-H Staff Development Specialist position has been closed.

The search process to fill the Extension 4-H Staff Development Specialist position has been officially closed. The offer to the candidate of choice was declined. The search will resume again within the next few weeks with the position to be advertised at the Assistant/Associate Professor rank. Members of the original search committee have agreed to serve again, with Gary Gerhard and Elaine Johannes serving as Co-Chairs. Members include Jodi Besthorn, Alesia Wood, Glenn Newdigger, Cindy Baldwin and Diane Mack.

Your efforts in recruiting a deep and wide pool of candidates will be greatly appreciated. --Pat McNally pmcnally@oznet.ksu.edu

KANSAS YOUTH LEADERSHIP FORUM & 4-H VOLUNTEER LEADER FORUM
Registrations for KYLF and the Volunteer Forum are due this Friday, October 14, by 5 p.m., either on-line or on paper at local Extension offices.  Paper registration forms may either be entered on-line by the 14th at Extension offices or mailed as "late registrations" along with Kansas 4-H Participation Forms to arrive in the State 4-H Office no later than 5 p.m., Friday, October 21.  Kansas 4-H Participation Forms for ALL youth delegates and volunteers must be signed, completed and current.  Please make sure photocopies are legible.

Full information can be found about both conferences at http://www.Kansas4-H.org . Look under the "What's Hot" section.

Additional information for KYLF has been placed on the state 4-H website, including a tentative schedule, a sample letter/e-mail to potential delegates, and a full color flyer.

Directions will be sent over the counties listserv explaining how Extension staff can check on-line registrations.

Remember, any adult serving as a chaperone for KYLF delegates must register with KYLF, but may participate in Volunteer Forum activities and workshops by indicating so on their workshop selections.

These are outstanding opportunities for 4-H volunteer and youth leadership development! --Rod Buchele rbuchele@oznet.ksu.edu , Beth Hinshaw bhinshaw@oznet.ksu.edu , Justin Wiebers jwiebers@ksu.edu

NEW FACULTY IDS
Current faculty and staff identification cards contain Social Security numbers. The K-State ID Center is beginning the process of issuing cards without Social Security numbers.

If you are located OFF-CAMPUS you can get a new card during Annual Conference. Plan to stop by the ID Center (located on first floor between the Copy Center and the bank) to have your picture taken on Monday, October 17, or Tuesday, October 18, before noon. The IDs will then be ready to pick up on Wednesday at 1 p.m. If you are not able to have your picture taken on Monday or Tuesday before noon, you can get a new ID at a later date when you are in Manhattan. Take a photo ID - either your current K-State ID or drivers license.

Because you will be asking for an ID before the regularly scheduled faculty times (see below) be sure to tell the individuals at the center that you are located off campus and are there in the Union attending K-State Research & Extension Annual Conference.

For ON-CAMPUS faculty and staff, the schedule for new IDs is 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on:

Monday, November 14 (Last names A-C)
Tuesday, November 15 (Last names D-H)
Wednesday, November 16 (Last names I-N)
Thursday, November 17 (Last names O-S)
Friday, November 18 (Last names T-Z)

One photo from each Kansas county was selected from the Kansas State Fair 4-H photography entries for display at various sites during the Kansas 4-H Centennial. --Rod Buchele rbuchele@oznet.ksu.edu , Steve Fisher sfisher@oznet.ksu.edu

COMMUNICATIONS EXPO AT ANNUAL CONFERENCE
You are invited to attend the first-ever Communications Expo at this year's K-State Research and Extension Annual Conference. The Expo is planned for Tuesday, October 18, 1:30 to 6:30 p.m., in the second floor concourse and the Cottonwood Room of the K-State Student Union.

The Communications Expo is a fun, informal way to learn more about communications services available to K-State Research and Extension employees. It's a way to learn more about how to put your "Expertise in Action," with tips from folks with expertise in publications, media services, marketing, web development, and technology.

Plus, raffle drawings will be held throughout the afternoon. Prizes include K-State Research and Extension merchandise, as well as gift certificates for $100, $75 and $50 to the K-State Union Bookstore.

You may already have signed up to attend the Communications Expo when you registered for annual conference. Even if you didn't, you can come by anytime in the afternoon on Tuesday, and especially during the planned break at 2:30 p.m. and the reception from 5:15 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. An ice cream social - featuring Call Hall's most popular varieties - highlights the 2:30 p.m. break on this day.

The Communications Expo is hosted by the K-State Research and Extension Department of Communications. --Pat Melgares melgares@oznet.ksu.edu
