WORD FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH
I was invited to participate with the North Central Regional Collegiate 4-H Conference held here on the K-State campus this past weekend. I was impressed with the leadership and coordination that was evident among the K-State Collegiate 4-H group who were hosting the conference. They put together a power-packed day of learning, fun, and community service. I was able to attend the banquet that evening where they had Bill Cordes as their keynote speaker. Many of you may be familiar with Bill as he is a noted motivational speaker to youth and young adults. I guess since his words were motivational to me that puts me into the category of youth and young adults?

Just one point I will extract from his presentation to that group of Collegiate 4-H leaders from across the Midwest, and that is how he defined leadership for them. Bill started by pointing out that this group was elite and special, or they would not have given their weekend to the opportunities for learning and community service. And, he anticipated that every one of them was there to take something back to their respective institutions from their experience and who they met. His point was that each of them was a leader, and so what does it mean to show leadership?

Leadership, as he related, is not about standing in front of others and barking out the orders for the day; it's not about proving you are the smartest person in the room; it's not about taking advantage of others; nor is it about gaining power for the sake of gaining power. Instead, leadership should first be placed in the ethic of service, serving others; leadership should be about giving of oneself for a cause; leadership is about caring enough to take a risk of being different; and, leadership in its truest sense is about helping others to solve their problems.

I could elaborate much further, but I won't. I was impressed with the way in which he described leadership to those young adults by being willing to take bold steps where others may not wish to tread for fear of being put down. But, most importantly, he stressed to look at leadership not as a means to gain recognition, but rather as a way to exhibit trust and carry out responsibility for the public good. Inspiration to us all. Thanks, Bill Cordes, for your words of encouragement and wisdom! --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@ksu.edu

GRANT PROPOSALS BEING ACCEPTED BY SUNFLOWER FOUNDATION AND COORDINATED SCHOOL HEALTH - KANSAS DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION
Two Requests for Proposals (RFPs) have been released to promote healthy lifestyles among Kansas youth:

The Sunflower Foundation has announced it's accepting proposals to promote healthy eating, physical activity, tobacco prevention and walking trail development. Concept Papers are due November 15, with  selected full proposals due February 15. Proposal information and guidelines are available at www.sunflowerfoundation.org .

K-State competed successfully in the last round of this funding with proposals from Mike Bradshaw and Elaine Johannes receiving funding for walking trail development and program development to "seed" walking trails across Kansas with 4-H youth involvement.

The Kansas Department of Education/ Child Nutrition & Wellness, are accepting proposals for CDC-funded Coordinated School Health grants. Though proposals must originate from school districts, Extension personnel are encouraged to support development of the proposals, and participate in their implementation if the promotion of healthy lifestyles is a local program area. Proposals are due November 16, to the Department of Education.

Information and applications are available at www.kshealthykids.org , under "Funding Opportunities," then under "Implementation & Evaluation Grant Application (2005)."

For more information about either RFP or about the November 15-16 KSRE Basic Grant Development workshop, contact Elaine Johannes, ejohanne@ksu.edu . --Elaine Johannes
