WORD FROM THE
ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH
Annual Conference 2005 is
history. I hope you take a few moments to complete the survey being sent
out by Debbie Hagenmaier. Your feedback will be important in future
planning. Thanks to all who poured time and effort into the planning and
into the presentations given throughout the 2 1/2 days. Hopefully, you
will take the time, if you haven't already, to thank those individuals
for whom you most appreciated the contributions they made to the content
of the conference. Send that note of thanks!!!
Dr. Colien Hefferan, USDA Cooperative
State Research Education and Extension Service (CSREES) Administrator
and our keynote on Tuesday morning, gave us all some excellent points to
ponder in our work. As a reminder, Colien referred to her "Twelve Steps
to Making a Difference" which I scribbled down hurriedly. Here are those
twelve steps:
1. Have a mission that matters.
2. Be a big thinker.
3. Be ethical. Expect to always take the high road.
4. Be a change master.
5. Be sensitive, trust others. Always look to the best in people.
6. Be a risk taker.
7. Be a decision maker.
8. Use power wisely.
9. Be an effective communicator.
10. Be a team builder. Compete with yourself, team with others.
11. Be courageous.
12. Be committed to people and to the system.
I'd encourage all of us to ponder these
steps in our work every day. As she so competently defined each of the
twelve steps, think through what each step means to you in your
contribution to making a difference for the good of society.
One other unrelated thought.... In our
work, we are all expected to be leaders. Leaders know full well that to
accomplish anything, we need a network. Have you ever thought about who
you should know, or who should know you in order for you to truly be a
leader within your area of responsibility? This isn't an audience
for your programs, but rather those who may help you in working with
your audience. I'd suggest making a list of persons who fit that
description, first as a general list, then make that list more and more
specific, until you have the list of maybe 50 persons with whom you need
to network to achieve your greatest impacts in making a difference. If
you are like me, I have some work to do to make more contacts and to
develop more relationships in that quest for being the best I can be for
that of which I am responsible. When successful, you now have a great
group of individuals who are "go to" for you, and they have you for that
same purpose. --Daryl Buchholz

passion for SpaceTech, let them contact

THANK YOU FROM DEB MCCLAIN-WILLIAMS
I would like to thank all of you for the kind words, cards and prayers
that my family received after my mother, Patricia McClain, passed away.
You made it so much easier and I know that if there is another rough
trail to follow, my friends in K-State Research and Extension will be at
my back. That is so comforting to know.
The memorial gifts received will go to the Olsburg Swimming Pool
since that was her pet project. Possibly, a shelter at the kiddie pool
will be built to provide shade for mothers and grandmothers to sit and
enjoy watching the little ones swim. Thank you all so very much. --Deb
