WORD FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH
Teamwork remains a theme and priority for K-State Research and Extension. It is a tradition of the Holiday Seasons to come together and express thanks and appreciation for one another. With this final "Word from..." for 2005, I wish to express my thanks to you for the work you have done in cooperation with others to accomplish those larger goals set before you. Fred likes to use the quote, "creativity comes through individuals, productivity comes through teams." We can all appreciate those times when we were involved in a team effort and all individuals did their part to make it a success. I am convinced that the value of teamwork far exceeds the challenges that come with working together towards common goals.

In our system of recognition and merit, we still have a lot to learn about the art of evaluating and recognizing the importance of contributions made by individuals in support of the overall team goals and intended outcomes. We have a performance evaluation system that is structured towards recognition of individual accomplishments. We continue to look for ways to better recognize team accomplishments as means by which we create our greatest impacts. Great teamwork comes through coaching and commitment to team goals. Individual goals must align with the team goals to be successful. I appreciate each of you and the work you do in leadership, support, and service as a part of the greater team of K-State Research and Extension in helping all of us to exceed the expectations of our stakeholders and our public.

May you have a most blessed Christmas and Happy New Year. May you fill your heart with joy and happiness. May you make all those special "connections" with family and friends. And, may your travels be safe. I look forward to connecting back with you in 2006. --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@k-state.edu

UNIVERSITY AND OZNET SERVER MAINTENANCE DECEMBER 27-29
Websites, databases and e-mail will not be available from 6 a.m., December 27, through 2 p.m., December 29. The University will be installing a back-up power generator on the 27th. Most servers will be off-line to do this. IET will take advantage of this outage to upgrade and reconfigure OzNet servers. This process will take at least two days, possibly three, to accomplish.

IET will post a web notice explaining why access to websites is unavailable during this time. Concerning the holiday schedule... IET staff will not be available December 25-29 and January 1-2.

Please call IET, 785-532-6270, if you have questions about this information. --Roger Terry rterry@oznet.ksu.edu

KANSAS 4-H HORSE ACHIEVEMENT LEVEL TESTING GOES "ON-LINE"
County offices and agents will soon be receiving details via the county listserv as to how your 4-H Horse project members can take the "Knowledge Level Horse Test" on-line. This procedure will let the member and county know immediately whether they passed the knowledge test.

In addition, counties can check the status of all of their members at any time. Actually, we would like for each county to check their county listing to let us know those that are no longer 4-H members so we can keep the data base up to date.

Skill tests will still be processed in much the same way as in the past. We also plan to post the procedures as a "Help" file at the on-line site. Please help us begin the New Year by trying this new process. --James P. Adams jadams@oznet.ksu.edu
