IN THIS ISSUE... ...Word
from the Associate Director - Extension and Applied Research WORD FROM THE
ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH I want to announce one personnel change taking place as a result of our continued look at the strategic plan and in listening and interpreting. We are making a significant commitment to bringing greater order, discipline, and eventual opportunity in professional development for our Extension professionals. To help design this journey and process, I have asked Margaret Phillips to give full time attention to our professional development and in-service training system (or lack thereof) for all Extension faculty, agents and specialists. As a result, Margaret will be shifting her role from that of support to Paula Peters and the FCS programs to more broad responsibility to the overall Extension professional development and in-service training system to be developed. This change is effective immediately. Margaret comes with a wealth of experience, having been a county extension agent, area specialist, and currently in her administrative role as assistant program leader. She also brings a sincere passion for the importance of professionalism and growth through professional development opportunities. In the coming months, Margaret will be moving to Umberger Hall. Creating greater order, discipline, and increased opportunity for professional development and in-service education has been a goal for Extension administration for a number of years. Creating a series of "tracts" with educational opportunities for the Extension professional and laid out in such a way so as to actually be able to create possible career paths is a long term goal. The process of getting to that point has several objectives and steps that will be absolutely necessary and critical to ever achieve such a system for K-State Research and Extension professionals. Our current system of master calendar and free-wheeling of in-service educational opportunities has its advantages. But, one major shortfall is in its lack of being able to see what is available, what should be considered, where gaps exist, and how to derive a plan that will allow a career professional to continue to grow through a well designed professional development planning tool. Margaret, with the help of many of you, will tackle this important task with expectation for a much improved system for planning of in-service and professional development tracts for all Extension professionals in the coming years. --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@ksu.edu
