WORD FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH
In the past few weeks I have had the pleasure of traveling across this state and making numerous visits to local Extension offices to visit with elected Extension Board leadership, agents, and office professionals. In one of those visits the discussion turned towards mentoring and supporting new Extension agents. This agent related his experience some 33 years back as he started his professional career as an Extension Agent in Kansas. One of those seemingly little things made a life-long impression upon him. That was to get a call from other Extension professionals, welcoming him into the organization and offering their support and assistance in helping him to become a successful new employee.

Now part of that conversation led to a mental commitment he made to himself that he would see that as new agents came on board, he would make them feel welcome and provide his experience and support to them. He'd fallen down on that commitment. So, I vowed I'd help him out by providing a list of Extension agents who had been hired into our system in the last 18 months. That list follows with name, date hired, location and primary responsibility, phone, and e-mail:

I encourage everyone throughout K-State Research and Extension to pick up the phone or drop an e-mail to introduce yourself to any of these agents you've not met and let them know something about you and your commitment to helping them to be successful in their new roles in the organization.

Additionally, we have new office professionals, program staff, and faculty who come on board all the time. As you hear of these individuals coming on board, take a moment to welcome them and help them to feel supported in their new positions. Treat them as you were treated, or wish you were treated, when you came on board! And, note that it takes NO experience to share a welcome to new colleagues. In other words, even if your name appears above, you too can welcome a new colleague! --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@ksu.edu

ADVERTISING AND PUBLICATIONS DISCLOSURE NO LONGER NEEDED
During the 2005 Kansas legislative session a law requiring that all "media advertising" produced by state agencies and paid for with state funds include a disclosure that such advertising is partly or wholly paid for with funds from state taxpayers. This legislation no longer affects KSU; and as such, any advertisement ordered for publication on or after July 1, 2006 no longer requires the noted disclosure.

If you have questions, please contact Bruce Shubert at 785-532-6226. --Keith Ratzloff, Assistant VP/Controller klr@ksu.edu

THANK YOU FROM MARY MECK HIGGINS
My family and I feel very blessed by the support we have received since Randy's death. Thank you for the shower of letters and cards! We especially appreciate hearing and reading the many stories that you have shared with us. Randy had a great impact on the lives of many. May peace be with you. --Mary Meck Higgins mhiggins@ksu.edu

KSU FOUNDATION UPDATE: LIFE INSURANCE
Many of our friends have found life insurance the ideal vehicle for making a significant charitable gift, either during life or death. Consider the advantages:

  • A gift of life insurance is certain. The full proceeds are payable to assure your philanthropic goals are achieved.
  • Life insurance is paid promptly; it is not tied up in the administration of the estate.
  • Life insurance gifts are simple; just ask the insurance company for the appropriate forms to make KSUF owner and/or beneficiary of a policy.
  • Gifts of a policy are tax deductible, as are future premium payments.
  • Charitable gifts of life insurance can be even more satisfying for your community members because they can direct it to your local extension programs. We invite you to meet with the Gift Planning professionals at the KSU Foundation to explore the splendid opportunities available for planning a truly satisfying gift. Contact us at 785-532-7586 or 1-800-432-1578 today. --Lori Rogge lorir@ksu.edu
