WORD FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH
Do grants make sense when doing Extension work? Can an "Extension-led" grant be competitive among proposals for National Research Initiative funding? The answer to both questions is YES! As a matter of fact, our USDA partner - Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service is working to increase the number of proposals that are led by Extension and teaching faculty with appropriate goals and objects. Integrated programs are becoming an increased emphasis where the ideal proposal is built around a set of objectives focused on an external audience with vital research components addressed within the proposal.

Now we have a workshop coming to Kansas City that specifically focuses on writing proposals that would have high success for funding among the integrated programs of USDA-CSREES. I hope you will discuss with your department/unit head your participating in this workshop. Information follows:

CSREES-USDA Integrated Programs Grantsmanship Workshop

November 8-9, 2006, Kansas City, MO

University of Missouri Extension will host a Grantsmanship Workshop on CSREES Integrated Programs focusing on the Section 406 Integrated Research, Education, and Extension Program and opportunities within the National Research Initiative for support of integrated activities. Agency staff will give an overview of CSREES Integrated Competitive Programs and describe how to integrate research, education, and extension in developing and implementing competitive proposals. Experienced Project Directors will speak on how to successfully design a strong integrated project, write a winning proposal, and implement a successful integrated project. Faculty in research, extension, and academics are encouraged to attend.

UNVEILING OF 4-H VIP ORIENTATION RESOURCES AT ANNUAL CONFERENCE
New 4-H VIP Orientation resources will be unveiled during Annual Conference.

The 4-H VIP Online Orientation will be unveiled during sessions on Wednesday, September 27, at 1:30 p.m. and again at 2:30 p.m. If you didn't sign up for either session, stop by the VIP display during the Resource Fair to view the online course.

Each local Extension Office will receive a 4-H VIP Orientation CD. Agents need to PICK UP their copy (one per local unit) at the VIP display at the Resource Fair or during the "Unveiling the Online 4-H VIP Orientation" sessions. Local units may purchase additional copies of the CD during Annual Conference for $5. You may take the additional CDs home with you and an invoice will be mailed to your local office.

Offering the 4-H VIP Orientation at a face to face session is still the best option. We created a revised PowerPoint and lesson plan that match the one on the CD. They will be available on the web at http://www.kansas4-h.org/Volunteer/VIP/ on September 27.

Remember that all 4-H VIP resources are available on the web to help you as this new 4-H year begins. Note too that a Board Leadership Module on the Volunteer Information Profile is now on the Board Leadership website. The module is designed for agents to use to help their board understand the procedure for screening and orienting volunteers. To get to the module, go to www.oznet.ksu.edu/boardleadership . ESP ENDOWMENT FUND SILENT AUCTION
Epsilon Sigma Phi Endowment will conduct a Silent Auction during the Annual ESP Awards Banquet again this year. Last year we donated the proceeds to the Hurricane Extension Disaster Fund, so it's time to support our own Alpha Rho Endowment Fund again. Endowment Grant requests this year totaled $13,238 for 10 Professional Development or Program Innovation applications. Let's continue to support our members' ideas and efforts!

Please donate your time, talent, and/or items such as K-State merchandise, decorations, homemade goodies, or whatever you think appropriate. NEW MODULE ON BOARD LEADERSHIP WEBSITE
A new module about the Volunteer Information Profile has been added to the Board Leadership website. The module is designed for use at monthly board meetings by agents, 4-H leaders or board members. The module will give board members an overview of the comprehensive process for selecting, screening, orienting and appointing 4-H volunteers.

WYANDOTTE COUNTY EXTENSION OFFICE MOVING
The Wyandotte County Extension Office will be moving. The last day for business at the current location at the Courthouse Annex is Wednesday, September 27. Beginning Thursday, September 28, the phones, computers, and internet will be shut down. We should reopen for business on Tuesday, October 3, at the new location.

The new address is 1216 N. 79th Street, Kansas City, KS 66112. The phone number will remain the same. --Pam Frazey
