WORD FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH
This is annual conference week for K-State Research and Extension. I would remind you that we have an outstanding lineup of speakers today (Tuesday, September 25). This afternoon at 1:30 p.m. in Forum Hall is John Miller, author of QBQ! Question Behind the Question and a brand new book, Flipping the Switch. His mission: "Helping Organizations Make Personal Accountability a Core Value." I can assure you that coming to hear him in most any other venue would carry a fairly hefty price tag. But, today, if you are able to read this, you are welcome to come to Forum Hall in the K-State Union and hear his presentation at no cost! Indeed, we prefer to have everyone registered, but there will be no one screening the crowd at the doors. It's your personal choice.

Wednesday morning at 8:30 a.m., also in Forum Hall of the K-State Union, we will be hearing from General Richard Myers. General Myers will have given lectures on the campus on Monday, and will be with us for this special lecture on leadership to K-State Research and Extension. Again, we prefer you registered, but don't let that stop you from hearing his words of wisdom and inspiration.

Throughout annual conference there are a host of great learning and professional development sessions. You can get the full lineup of sessions by checking on the  K-State Research and Extension 2006 Annual Conference website . You are welcome to participate in any of the sessions. Just know that if you are there without having registered, the food functions will be off limits, and priorities for handouts will go to those who are registered.

Your participation is totally up to you. Hope to see you there! --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@ksu.edu

Surajit K. De Datta, internationally renowned global food expert and one of the principal contributors to the Green Revolution in Asia, will make a special presentation on Friday, September 29, at 4 p.m. in Room 1018, Throckmorton Plant Sciences Center. TREND MICRO OFFICESCAN REPLACES SYMANTEC ANTI-VIRUS
K-State has replaced Symantec Anti-virus with Trend Micro Officescan as the official anti-virus/anti-spyware package.  Trend Micro has better features including an anti-spyware function and strong firewall which Symantec Anti-virus didn't have.

Trend Micro Officescan must be installed on all computers used for daily work by K-State and K-State Research and Extension by October 1, 2006 for regular updates of anti-virus definitions to be maintained.  After October 2nd, scanning for machines running Symantec will take place and these machines will be blocked from internet access.  If you don't see a blue stop sign in the system tray of your Windows, you need to install Trend Micro Officescan.

You can get Trend Micro Officescan from the K-state Research and Extension Computer Tool Kit 2007 or from http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/techweb  website.   Please read the How to Install Trend Micro document before installing Trend Micro Officescan.

If you have any questions, please contact IET, support@oznet.ksu.edu , or 785-532-6270. --Larry Havenstein Lhavenst@oznet.ksu.edu

The satellite program, hosted by Ray Suarez, will also feature three notable proponents of grassroots development: Dr. Makanjuola Arigbede, a Nigerian doctor; Ms. Eva Clayton, a former U.S. congresswoman; and Dr. Deepa Narayan, World Bank Senior Advisor for Poverty Reduction. The event is free and everyone is invited to take part as their schedule permits. A light snack will be provided. --Ginny Barnard ginnyb@ksu.edu
