WORD FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH
Professional development and continued personal growth of all faculty in both a subject matter competency  and in the competencies it takes to be an Extension professional are vital to the future of K-State Research and Extension.

Today, Tuesday, February 6, we are beginning a two day work session on developing plans for subject matter competency development in the 13 areas of program focus. These meetings are happening in the K-State Alumni Center. Expectations and outcomes for each program focus team have been defined as follows:

  1. Each team will engage in a full dialog on future planning to increase the capacity of an Extension agent to develop expertise and deliver programming in a given subject matter area. I anticipate that both specialists AND agents would have some ideas of what that would take. Expertise and active programming may not be synonymous with respect to the training and development needed. It is important that all voices are heard and valued for input into this process. In many respects, the intent of this process is to develop a "community of practice" where all participants contribute to the overall success of the team through the diversity of roles, responsibilities, and experiences brought to the team.
  2. Each team will develop a long range (3 to 5 year process) of curriculum and a perceived sequence that will build those capacities of expertise and programming. Both agents and specialists must believe completion of such steps will increase capacity. The plan must also be doable with respect to the resources of time and cost. This curriculum is not expected to be complete at the conclusion of this meeting, but is to be completed by July 2007.
  3. Each team will maintain a list of training opportunities for agents within the given subject area.
  4. Each team will take responsibility after the meeting in identifying the necessary people and opportunities to see that someone will design and submit training and/or professional development opportunities into the system through the professional development / training approval process by August 1, 2007 for communication and consideration by all agents who have interest in such development. This first set of offerings should cover the period through December 31, 2008.
  5. The team will take responsibility for communicating the results of this meeting and subsequent developments through a program focus team website so that anyone can ascertain and understand the work of the team.

We are committed to continue to communicate upcoming deadlines for submission of training opportunities so that agents will be able to select from the catalog of opportunities how they intend to devote the limited (10%) time for their personal, professional improvement.

Any lack of understanding or confusion with the process, or suggested improvements for the process, must be brought forward and considered in the overall delivery structure for training and professional development. Reminds me of an anonymous quote, "Life is like a band. We need not all play the same part, but, we MUST all play in harmony."

Thanks for accepting your role in this process. - Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@ksu.edu

TECHBYTES SERIES BEGINS FEBRUARY 7 WITH GOOGLE TOOLS!
The TechBytes series for the spring semester starts this week. These seminars are free and open to the K-State community to share technology innovations, whether it's a new technology or a new way to use an existing technology. The complete lineup will be posted soon on the TechBytes website, www.ksu.edu/techbytes . These programs are also offered as a live broadcast using video streaming.

Google Tools! kicks off the series at 1:15 p.m., Wednesday, February 7, in Union 213. Over the last several years, Google has developed a great number of useful tools, many of which are available to the public without charge. Part of Google's philosophy is, "It's best to do one thing really, really, well." That one thing is search, and you'll find that is the common theme to an ever-increasing array of Google tools.

Google is organizing the world's information and making it readily available to anyone with an Internet connection. Come take a peek at some of the lesser known tools like Personalized Homepage, Calendar, Picasa, Notebook, and SketchUp.

For more information, contact Gerry Snyder, gsnyder@ksu.edu . --Gerry Snyder

MARIE’S PICK OF THE WEEK
While continuing to review the Project Accomplishments database for items especially effective at helping us understand how our work can be highlighted to share outcomes, impacts, and success stories, this week’s selection comes from Cheri Nelsen.

Cheri’s outcomes state: The older youth involved in 4-H have really stepped up and become leaders at school, church, and in various other activities and organizations. She went on to include a success story about several of the 4-H youth also serving as presidents of FFA, FCCLA, and other organizations. One particular, previously quiet, shy girl was recently named high individual at the National FFA Ag Communications contest. Cheri stated that this girl had become a true leader in 4-H and FFA. Their FFA team placed first in the competition; four of the five team members were also 4-H members! --Marie Blythe mblythe@ksu.edu

FRAMEWORK OUT OF POVERTY
Framework out of Poverty is a two day workshop developed to help extension, education and agency personnel gain a greater understanding of the challenges and strengths of different social classes. The workshop will be held March 27 and 28 at the Sedgwick County Extension Education Center, 7001 W. 21st St N, Wichita, KS.

This workshop is an extension of the Bridges out of Poverty workshop that was offered last year. The first day will focus on developing and understanding the skills needed to work with low-income audiences. The presenter will be a member of the "aha! process" team (not the same presenter as last year) that explores the hidden rules of social economic groups, the causes of poverty, language differences and possible cognitive issues. The second day our presenter will be Consuelo Sandoval, who specializes in cultural issues, especially as they relate to Hispanics and people living in poverty.

Whether you attended last year's workshop or if you are a first-timer, you will gain valuable insight regarding issues of poverty and how you can improve your programming to better meet the needs of your low-income clientele. To get the most benefit from the workshop, it will be helpful to read (or reread) the book "Bridges out of Poverty-Strategies for Professionals and Communities." If you would like to purchase a book ($20), please indicate that on your registration form.

Register for the workshop online at www.4-h.k-state.edu . The fee for both March 27 and 28 is $50. A one day registration is $40. The registration deadline is March 15. --Carol Fink cfink@ksu.edu , Gary Gerhard ggerhard@ksu.edu , Evelyn Neier eneier@ksu.edu

They will be held in the Southwest Area on October 30, Northwest Area on October 31, Southeast Area on November 6, and Northeast Area on November 7. Additional information on location and times will be available about September 1. New resources for mentors and new agents will be introduced at the workshops.

The target audience will include agents who have been mentors, those who would like to be mentors, agents who have or will have a new colleague and new agents.

Contact Margaret Phillips, margaret@ksu.edu ; or Stacey Warner,  swarner@ksu.edu ; to suggest something you would like to have included in the workshop or in the new resources. --Stacey Warner
