WORD FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH
A theme for my articles over the last year or more could be characterized as encouraging personal growth and professional development. Indeed, I am a believer in professionalism, personal growth, and working towards continuous improvement as an Extension professional. It remains so important to me that I find it difficult to tolerate individuals who don't exhibit a thirst for learning, experiencing, and growing as a professional. Its hard for me to believe hearing someone say that he/she doesn't really see a need to go to workshops, conferences, or seminars on leadership, professionalism, educational approaches, or other ways to improve as an Extension professional. How can one allow himself to stagnate? I can almost always bring something home that is valuable to me in my life. But, then I've got to go with the intent of searching for ways to become a better citizen, professional, leader, educator.

The Alpha Rho Chapter of Epsilon Sigma Phi, your Extension Professional's Organization, provides grant funds to its members to grow professionally and to share innovative programs with others. Each year at Annual Conference, ESP announces new grant recipients. The stories of how those grants helped in either a professional growth experience or in delivering an innovative program are told continuously.

Funding for the ESP grants comes through donations to the ESP Endowment Fund. That endowment now has in excess of $100,000. The ESP Board has set a goal of $150,000 by 2012 and $200,000 by 2017. This translates into an ever-growing pool of grant funds to support you in your growth as an Extension professional. During the University's Changing Lives Campaign, this is an ideal time to make a commitment, as simple as an on-going payroll deduction. I've made this commitment at annual conference, and would challenge each of you to do so as well. I know of no better way to encourage continuous growth and professionalism within our system than to make more and more funds available to assist individuals in participating in such personal professional growth opportunities. --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@ksu.edu

ORIENTATION FOR EXTENSION BOARDS
The Extension Board Leadership website has a module designed for use in orienting newly elected board members. The New Board Member Orientation Module is designed to be presented to new board members after their election, but before the January joint board meeting.

While most of the modules on the website are designed for presentation in a 15 to 20 minute time frame, the orientation module will take approximately 90 minutes so is designed to be scheduled at a time other than a regular board meeting. The orientation can be presented by the county or district director, agents and experienced board members.

The module includes a Presenter's Guide, PowerPoint presentation, and a sample list of what might be included in a notebook for board members. The information can be found at www.oznet.ksu.edu/boardleadership . Click on Board Leadership Modules in the center of the page. --Stacey  Warner swarner@ksu.edu

EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR PROCESS FOR 2008
1) Classified Senate Process
Last month, the Classified Senate Recognition Committee wrote to all KSU Department Heads, Directors, and Unit Heads that they are requesting names of classified employees nominated for Employee of the Year from the various Departments/Units to be submitted by November 30, 2007. The Annual Classified Employee's Recognition Ceremony will be held on Wednesday April 2, 2008.

This early demand for nominations and changes in the process plus the monetary awards took us by surprise. The campus process does not take into account our tradition of nominating county office professionals and our Unclassified Employee of the Year process.

At this point, we want the Departments/Units/Area Offices/Ag Research Centers to send their selected classified employees of the year to the Classified Senate this fall by November 30, 2007, as requested by the Classified Senate Recognition Committee.

Departments may provide a monetary award to an employee or co-recipients not to exceed $300 (net of taxes) individually. The award will be paid using department funds or endowment funds.

2) K-State Research and Extension Process
We recently met with our team of Department Heads, Unit Leaders, Area Directors, and Ag Research Directors to discuss how K-State Research and Extension plus the College of Agriculture should proceed to select the other classified employees of the year from counties/districts plus the unclassified employee of the year.

What we came up with is to do a process similar to the past, only it would take place in late May. We will now solicit Builder/Mentor/Diversity and Employee of the Year Awards together.

a) We want the Departments/Units/Area Offices/Ag Research Centers to send their classified employees of the year to the Classified Senate this fall by November 30, 2007, as requested by the Classified Senate Recognition Committee.

b) In late May, we will solicit employee of the year nominations from the County and District Office Professionals who are not state employees.

c) We will collect the entire list from Classified Senate and select one or possibly two "Classified Employee(s) of the Year from that list.

d) We will choose an unclassified employee of the year (this includes unclassified employees in offices, plus Lab and Field Technicians).

As part of this revised process, we will send the letter soliciting awards not only to the Department/Unit Heads but also to the Personnel Specialists. We will also ask the Personnel Specialists to share a list of the people in their unit (classified and unclassified) who are eligible, along with their names and exact titles. This will make it easier for people to know who to nominate and what the proper/official job titles are.

All the employees of the year (County/District, Area/ARC, Campus, and Unclassified) will be invited to the K-State Research and Extension Annual Conference Awards banquet and ceremony.

The County/District Office Professional employee of the year and Unclassified employee of the year will also be awarded $300 individually. They will receive plaques at our K-State Research and Extension Annual Conference.

I hope this new process is clear to everyone. If you have questions, please let me know. Thanks. --Steven  Graham sgraham@k-state.edu

MARIE'S PICKS OF THE WEEK
While beginning to review the 2007 Project Accomplishments database for items that are especially effective at helping us understand how our work can be highlighted to share outcomes, impacts, and success stories, this week my picks are success stories reported by Brent Goss and Crystal Coffman.

This past year the Ellsworth County Extension Council offered two camping trips for 4-H youth: Rock Springs and the NW adventure trip. Our success story is enrollment related: On the NW area back packing trip the last three years, three to four have participated. This year we had 11 youths signed up for the trip—a couple of those kids weren't enrolled in our 4-H program. Guess what—after the trip they signed up for the 2008 4-H year! Parents told me for weeks that their kids loved the trip and are ready to go back next year.

Kay Voorhees and Jessie Furnish were selected to make a four (4) minute presentation on their mentor relationship. This presentation was made for Governor Kathleen Sebelius during the Governor’s Luncheon at the Kansas State Fair. In their own words, Kay and Jessie each described how they worked together. That mentor relationship helped Jessie receive scholarship funds to pay for her first year at Kansas State University. Jessie received more than $15,000 in scholarship funds—at least one of the scholarships is renewable! –Marie Blythe mblythe@ksu.edu

PUBLICATIONS/DISTRIBUTION UPDATE
Photo Release/Reprint Permission Forms Available
Remember to acquire permission whenever your office reprints an image from a nonstaff photographer or uses a printed or electronic image of a nonstaff person in printed material or on the Website. The forms should be kept on file in your office to respond to legal inquiries. Forms for both are available at http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/techweb/DesktopDefault.aspx?tabid=495 .

The Photo Consent and Release Form (sometimes called a model release form) should be completed before printing or posting the image of an individual who does not work for K-State Research and Extension. It should be used for recognizable photos of clients, class participants or others who might have attended a local or regional program. (Note that 4-H Youth Development membership forms already include a section for photo release that must be signed by a parent/guardian, as does this form if the subject is under age 18.)

The Reprint Permission Form should be acquired from clients or other photographers (Master Gardeners, for example) who want to contribute photos to be used on a Website or in a newsletter. The photographer retains the copyright, but is granting K-State Research and Extension the right to use the photo in print or electronically. If the nonstaff photographer's photos include human subjects, a Photo Consent and Release Form from each subject pictured is also required.

If your office is interested in acquiring printed pads of photo release forms or reprint permission forms, please contact Nancy Zimmerli-Cates by e-mail at nancyz@ksu.edu . If there is sufficient interest, pads of 25 sheets (5.5 x 8.5) of forms can be made available for about $0.75 each.
