WORD FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH
December is a time of preparation. December is also a time of reflection and celebration for Extension. By now, all the 2007 county Extension annual meetings are history. The accomplishments, reflections, and stories have been told. I was honored to have been in attendance of a few of those annual meetings. If those few are any indication of what was happening all across the state this past year, then Kansas citizens were well served through the education and programs. It is through those reflections, stories, and accomplishments that the impacts of your work become evident.

Thank you for the commitment, passion, and hard work you put forth in taking the knowledge to the people and helping them to understand how that knowledge can translate into a better quality of life. --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@ksu.edu

AGE CHANGE FOR STATE LEVEL 4-H COMPETITIVE EVENTS
The Kansas State Fair Board made official request to the 4-H Youth Development Department to change policy to allow the participation age to be lowered from 10 to 9 for 4-H youth exhibiting at the State Fair.

I charged the State 4-H Advisory and the state and area faculty to review the request and provide me with recommendations. After an in-depth review of the research in child development and thoughtful discussions, the State 4-H Advisory Committee has recommended that the age of 4-H participants in state-level competitive events be changed. This recommendation has been accepted by myself and the state and area 4-H Youth Development faculty.

Effective for the 2008-2009 4-H Year, 4-H members who are 9 years of age before January 1, 2009 will be allowed to participate in state-level 4-H competitive events, including the 2009 Kansas State Fair. Currently, a 4-H member must be age 10 before January 1 to participate in state-level competitive events.

Because of the programmatic implications this change will have at the local level as well as at the state level, a " 9 in 09 Task Force" consisting of agents, volunteers and teens will be convened in early 2008. Details will be discussed at the State 4-H Program Rally, January 10-11, at Rock Springs 4-H Center. --Pat McNally pmcnally@oznet.ksu.edu

INSECT ZOO GIFTSHOP WILL SET UP OUTSIDE WATERS 123 AGAIN THIS YEAR
The Insect Zoo giftshop will be selling selected items outside of the Entomology office, Waters 123, on Wednesday, December 19, and Thursday, December 20, from 12-5 p.m.

Hope to see you there! --Kiffnie Holt kiffnie@ksu.edu

DIVERSITY PROGRAMS OFFICE UPDATE
You know it’s time for a break when it starts snowing and sleeting outside!

We have reached the end of the fall semester and time has really seemed to fly by. I would like to thank everyone who has helped the Diversity Programs Office this year, and everyone who helped make this a great semester. We had some exciting programs this year and we would like to thank everyone for their support.

Before we leave we would like to remind everyone to help those who aren’t as fortunate as us, and to visit one of the "Giving Trees" that are located in Seaton, Trotter and Waters Hall. All of the gifts go to K-State’s Center for Child Development, and all of the gifts are inexpensive and can really make a child’s Christmas an extraordinary one. Donations will be accepted through Friday, December 14.

Please bring the gifts unwrapped to these locations:

Waters 138
Seaton 125

MARIE'S PICK OF THE WEEK
While beginning to review the 2007 Project Accomplishments for items that are especially effective at helping us understand how our work can be highlighted to share outcomes, impacts, success stories, and public value, this week my pick was reported by Dale Lanham.

Success Story:

When the Sheep Auction began in September 1989, I did not envision the record setting sale of June 2007 when almost 2000 head of sheep and goats were auctioned. Local producers have invested in the Extension goat management program. Meat goats currently outnumber sheep by almost three to one.

Public Value:

Improvements made by the Sheep and Goat Auction added many dollars to the Woodson County fairgrounds without any cost to the taxpayers, although we need to build new pens and restrooms.

This auction would not be possible without all of the outstanding and dedicated help that it takes to make it run smoothly. --Marie Blythe mblythe@ksu.edu
