AGE CHANGE FOR STATE LEVEL 4-H COMPETITIVE EVENTS I charged the State 4-H Advisory and the state and area faculty to review the request and provide me with recommendations. After an in-depth review of the research in child development and thoughtful discussions, the State 4-H Advisory Committee has recommended that the age of 4-H participants in state-level competitive events be changed. This recommendation has been accepted by myself and the state and area 4-H Youth Development faculty. Effective for the 2008-2009 4-H Year, 4-H members who are 9 years of age before January 1, 2009 will be allowed to participate in state-level 4-H competitive events, including the 2009 Kansas State Fair. Currently, a 4-H member must be age 10 before January 1 to participate in state-level competitive events. Because of the programmatic implications this change will have at the local level as well as at the state level, a " 9 in 09 Task Force" consisting of agents, volunteers and teens will be convened in early 2008. Details will be discussed at the State 4-H Program Rally, January 10-11, at Rock Springs 4-H Center. --Pat McNally pmcnally@oznet.ksu.edu

DIVERSITY
PROGRAMS OFFICE UPDATE We have reached the end of the fall semester and time has really seemed to fly by. I would like to thank everyone who has helped the Diversity Programs Office this year, and everyone who helped make this a great semester. We had some exciting programs this year and we would like to thank everyone for their support. Before we leave we would like to remind everyone to help those who aren’t as fortunate as us, and to visit one of the "Giving Trees" that are located in Seaton, Trotter and Waters Hall. All of the gifts go to K-State’s Center for Child Development, and all of the gifts are inexpensive and can really make a child’s Christmas an extraordinary one. Donations will be accepted through Friday, December 14. Please bring the gifts unwrapped to these locations: Waters 138

MARIE'S PICK OF THE WEEK Success Story: When the Sheep Auction began in September 1989, I did not envision the record setting sale of June 2007 when almost 2000 head of sheep and goats were auctioned. Local producers have invested in the Extension goat management program. Meat goats currently outnumber sheep by almost three to one. Public Value: Improvements made by the Sheep and Goat Auction added many dollars to the Woodson County fairgrounds without any cost to the taxpayers, although we need to build new pens and restrooms. This auction would not be possible without all of the outstanding and dedicated help that it takes to make it run smoothly. --Marie Blythe mblythe@ksu.edu
