WORD FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH
The following quote comes from Rogers, E. M. 2003. Diffusion of Innovations (5th Edition). New York: Free Press.

"One of the greatest pains to human nature is the pain of a new idea. It....makes you think that after all, your favorite notions may be wrong, your firmest beliefs ill-founded.... Naturally, therefore, common men hate a new idea, and are disposed more or less to ill-treat the original man who brings it."

                                                                                                  - Walter Bagehot Physics and Politics

The quote hits at the heart of truly being a change agent, which to me is synonymous with being a successful extension worker. Our success is measured by how well we do educating our audiences on change that would ultimately result in improving the quality of life or standard of living for the people living in Kansas. By nature, some of those educational opportunities may well be considered controversial when first introduced. Yet, as we fulfill our responsibility, we must be leaders of interest in the public good, and bringing knowledge and change to our target audiences.

Extension Partnership meetings are underway in 2008. The Partnership meetings are an opportunity for the K-State Research and Extension administrative team to meet with local Extension board leadership and Extension agents. We were in Garden City and Colby last week, and will be in Eureka and Manhattan this week. The Partnership meetings provide training and updates for effective Extension board leadership. --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@ksu.edu

REVISED KANSAS 4-H PARTICIPATION FORM
Based on feedback from agents and usage over the last 3 plus years, several refinements have recently been completed for the Kansas 4-H Participation form (Publication Number MG35).  It is now available on the web in both PDF and Microsoft Word Form versions.

If you have downloaded previous versions, we would urge you to download the new version for use in your office. If you have posted previous versions on your county websites, it would be a better practice to redirect your web links to the PDF version on the KSRE Publications Library at http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/library/4h_y2/mg35.pdf .  You could also link directly to a Microsoft Word Form version at: http://www.Kansas4-H.org/Forms/Participation/MG35Kansas4-HParticipationForm.doc .  The Microsoft Word Forms version is set up to preserve the layout and formatting of the document, yet allows participants to save and edit their information as needed.  Amy Hartman has sent a message directly to Agents in some counties where she found the previous version posted on their website.

Specific changes to the form include:

-Added a request to use blue or black ink to facilitate copying

-Re-organized participant contact information section

-Clarified emergency contact information: lists two contacts with two phone numbers each.  Users can indicated Home, Work, or Cell numbers.

-Removed references to “Survey” in Evaluation Release section

-Revised the code of conduct to reflect the CHARACTER COUNTS language and concepts

-Broadened code of conduct to encompass all 4-H participation; not just at events

-Added adult statement which incorporates both the code of conduct as well as the “Kansas 4-H Volunteer Code of Ethics required for all adult volunteers through the Volunteer Information Profile

-Reduced the number of signatures and dates required in the verification section from three down to one

-Modified second paragraph in the verification section by adding “Kansas 4-H Volunteer Code of Ethics (for adult participants)”

Either version of the Kansas 4-H Participation Form will be accepted for state 4-H events that occur prior to October 1, 2008.  After that date, all participants must utilize the new, 2008 version of the form. --Justin Wiebers jwiebers@ksu.edu

4-H DISCOVERY DAYS CLASSES AND TOURS NEEDED
4-H Discovery Days is coming up June 3-6 on the K-State campus in Manhattan.  We are expecting 600-750 participants this year since Discovery Days and the State FFA Convention are on different weeks.  We want to offer a wide variety of classes and tours for 4-H members. If you or someone you know (a graduate student, co-worker, friend, spouse, etc.) might have something fun to share with these youth, please share this information with them!

These two hour long sessions will be offered Wednesday afternoon, June 4, from 1:30 - 3:30 p.m.; again on Thursday, June 5, from 9:30 - 11:30 a.m.; and again from 1:30 - 3:30 p.m.  An option is available on Thursday to offer full day sessions from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with flexibility in scheduling lunch options.  You are welcome to offer sessions any or all of these times.

The youth range in age from 13 to 19 years old, but the majority of them are 15-16; just when they are beginning to consider careers, advanced education options, and personal interests.

The Workshop/Tour Proposal Form and a more detailed letter for potential instructors is posted at http://www.Kansas4-H.org/Events/DiscoveryDays/ .

If you’re interested in offering a session, I’d really appreciate having a proposal by February 1.  That way the information can be compiled and sent to Extension Agents for promoting Discovery Days, and your session, to their 4-H members through their newsletters and 4-H meetings prior to the April 15 registration deadline. --Justin Wiebers  jwiebers@ksu.edu

MARIE'S PICK OF THE WEEK
While beginning to review the 2007 Project Accomplishments for items that are especially effective at helping us understand how our work can be highlighted to share outcomes, impacts, success stories, and public value, this week my pick was reported by Barbara Addison.

Outcomes:

Thirteen teens developed babysitting and childcare skills to assist in improving the quality of childcare. The students reported that they felt comfortable in providing care for younger youths. With enthusiasm, the trained babysitters left the training equipped with many aspects of being a babysitter.

Success story:

A few weeks later, one mother thanked me for having a babysitting training because her daughter received many jobs after people learned that she had attended training. The training was an asset to her ability to get babysitting jobs. --Marie Blythe mblythe@ksu.edu
