WORD FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH
Administrative Professionals Week is happening NOW! According to the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP), the most common things done in observance of this week include some form of special recognition, lunch, or candy, flowers, or some gift. Indeed, this week should be a time when appreciation is given to the office professionals for the skills, abilities, support, and leadership they bring to K-State Research and Extension.

Without question, you, as an office professional, are the front door and often the first impression people will have for K-State Research and Extension. Thank you for all you do to continuously improve your skills, abilities, and knowledge in serving the people of Kansas through K-State Research and Extension. And, thank you for your care and attention to all those we serve in our mission towards "Knowledge for Life." --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@ksu.edu

DISCOVERING THE LEADER WITHIN YOU - THE LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE
Most people assume that leadership starts with a capital “L” and that the people at the top are the leaders. Well, forget it!  It’s pure myth that only a lucky few can ever understand the mystery of leadership. Leadership is not a place. It’s not a position. And it’s not a secret code. The truth is to develop ourselves and to facilitate the development of others..... Leadership is everyone’s business.  (Kouzes & Posner, 2007).

For the next several weeks, the Leadership Program Focus Team will be sharing a briefing about the 5 practices of leadership. This week’s practice is “encouraging the heart.”  At the heart of leadership is caring. Without showing others that you care and what you care about, other people won’t care about what you say or what you know. Leadership requires a connection between leaders and people.

We need to feel connected to others and, in turn, they to us, because greatness is never achieved all by ourselves. Encouraging the Heart is the leadership practice that connects us with another.

To learn more about “Encouraging the Heart” and other leadership principles, plan to participate in the “Discovering the Leader Within You” Workshop, October 7 - 9, 2008, at the Sedgwick County Extension Education Center, Wichita, Ks. Registration is $200, which includes a personal 360-degree assessment of your leadership skills. Registration is limited to 25 people on a first-come, first-serve basis. Additional information and registration can be found at http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/Employee_Resources/DesktopDefault.aspx?tabid=206 . --Jodi Besthorn besthorn@ksu.edu

MARKETING MINUTE: EXPANDING ON BRANDING -- WHO DO WE WANT TO BE?
In marketing, the term "branding" is used to reflect what an organization wants to be. Sometimes, however, branding is confused as being our logo or perhaps some other graphical representation of the organization.

An organization's brand is a promise -- a promise that whenever "customers" come to the organization, it will provide something of value.

K-State Research and Extension promises practical, research-based information that improves the quality of life of people in Kansas. That's the foundation of our organization's brand. From that, many "sub-brands" might represent our organization -- maybe good, maybe bad -- depending on how well we serve our customers.

For example, our customers may come to know us as having excellent customer service, friendly people, being easily accessible or something else. What we are known as depends largely on how well the entire organization consistently displays certain values.

Logos and other images become a symbol of an organization's promise. People who see our images and have a positive or negative impression often tell others about us -- a concept known as "buzz marketing" or creating "buzz."

Bottom line: When all members of an organization consistently deliver on the organization's brand promise, that's what people come to know you as.
