WORD FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH
Summer arrival has happened. With that comes County Fairs and opportunities for the 4-H youth to exhibit their accomplishments in the various projects, the culmination of a year of project work and development for which to be recognized and rewarded.

This is also the time of the year for K-State Research and Extension to begin nomination processes in recognizing the outstanding achievements of faculty and staff, individually and in teams. Recognition depends on your stepping up and nominating a deserving individual or team for great accomplishments.

I hope you will talk with colleagues about putting forth nominations for the deserving and truly outstanding accomplishments. Great work should never go unrecognized. You will find award nominations being announced in the coming weeks. Please be thinking about the individuals, teams, and projects that should be recognized, and make a commitment to see that the nominations are completed and submitted.

Have a great week! --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@ksu.edu

THANK YOU FROM LARRY ERPELDING
Thank you for the outpouring of notes, e-mails, and other expressions of sympathy as well as the memorial contributions made at the recent passing of my mother. I may be just a little biased, but in my opinion, I could not have selected a better place to be associated with over the past 30 years than the College of Agriculture and K-State Research and Extension. Thanks for your overwhelming support, thoughtfulness, and prayers. --Larry Erpelding lhe@oznet.ksu.edu

COMMUNITY FACILITY AND STORM SHELTER FUNDING AVAILABLE FROM USDA RURAL DEVELOPMENT
Grant and loan funding continues to be available for essential rural Kansas community development programs and storm shelters through USDA Rural Development. The Agency's Communities Facilities Program is designed to assist in the development of essential community facilities, including storm sirens for public use in rural areas, and the Single Family Home Repair Grant & Loan Program may assist in removing health and safety hazards for owner-occupied single family residences, such as storm shelters.

"The Community Facilities Program is a great tool to assist rural communities in developing new or enhancing existing facilities for public safety, public service and health care. The benefits of the program through grants and low-interest loans can significantly enhance the viability of critically needed community facility projects," commented State Director Banks.

Additionally, Banks said, "Severe weather can strike unexpectedly, often with serious personal consequences. As Kansans were again reminded last year, violent storms and the unfortunate loss of life underscores the need for improved home safety measures. The installation of an approved storm shelter offers important added safety and security when severe weather strikes. USDA can provide eligible homeowners an excellent opportunity to protect themselves and their families."

Through its Community Facilities Programs, the Department of Agriculture is striving to ensure that such facilities are readily available to all rural communities.

USDA Rural Development can also assist homeowners with other necessary improvements or repairs.

For additional information regarding all USDA Rural Development programs, interested parties may call the Agency's state headquarters at 785-271-2700 or log onto the state's USDA Rural Development website at www.rurdev.usda.gov/ks . --Steven Graham sgraham@k-state.edu

NOMINATE YOUR COLLEAGUES FOR AWARDS!
The Epsilon Sigma Phi - Alpha Rho Chapter is seeking nominations for the 2008 chapter awards. Kansas extension professionals are extremely talented and should have their skills and programs acknowledged at the state and national levels. Nomination forms for awards may be downloaded at http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/esp-AlphaRho/awards/awards.htm . Nominations will be due in early September. If you have questions, please contact me at 620-431-1530, or gprice@ksu.edu. --Gayle Price

RESOURCE FOR FAIR JUDGES
Fair season is fast approaching. "Creating A Positive Experience for 4-H Youth at the County Fair" captures the basics of information judges need to know to create the best fair experience possible for youth. It helps to remind judges to focus on youth, why we use standards, to award the ribbon that is earned and how to provide appropriate feedback. Include this 2-sided page when sending other fair judging details.

This resource is available under What's Hot on the State 4-H Website, http://www.kansas4h.org/Events/FairJudgEncl08.pdf . --Diane Mack dmack@ksu.edu

2009 KANSAS 4-H AND FFA WHEAT VARIETY PLOT ENROLLMENT
As wheat harvest approaches, it is time to remind members to re-enroll or ask new members to enroll for the 2009 Kansas 4-H and FFA Wheat Variety Plot program. The program begins fall of 2008 and goes through September 2009. The enrollment form is currently available on the
Kansas State 4-H Website , under "What's Hot" rather than the Northwest Research Extension site.

Members are asked to contact their local Extension Office by July 10 for information with enrollments due to the Northwest Area Extension Office by July 25, 2008. It is very important that we know the number of participants early, so we can have enough seed and metal signs available for Extension Agents and leaders to pick up at the Kansas State Fair. New participants will receive a large plot sign, and five individual variety signs. Returning members will receive updated variety signs if the varieties change. These will be distributed on the first weekend of the 2008 Kansas State Fair.

This year's participants who are getting ready to harvest their plots should be planning their county fair display for possible qualifying for the Kansas State Fair entry in the Pride of Kansas Building. Resource information for the wheat variety project includes:

(1) Wheat Variety Plot Brochure , 4-H 565 Rev., April 2000;
(2)
Wheat Variety Plot-- Youth Participant Handbook , 4-H 566, Aug. 1996; and
(3)

MARIE'S PICK OF THE WEEK
While reviewing the 2007 Impact Reports and Project Accomplishments for items that are especially effective at helping us understand how our work can be highlighted to share outcomes, impacts, success stories, and public value, this week my pick (outcomes, impact, and public value) was reported by Jeremy Nelson.

Low-income seniors in Cowley County participated in the Kansas Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition program. Low-income seniors were able to purchase fresh wholesome products from local vendors making it easy for them to improve their diets and hopefully their health, which will in turn benefit all of the citizens of Cowley County. --Marie Blythe mblythe@ksu.edu

RECRUITING FOR A WEB CONTENT COMMITTEE
We Want You! We are seeking volunteers to be part of the K-State Research and Extension Web Content Committee. We want people who have a strong interest in the Websites, who can envision the future of our site, and who understand the breadth and quality of content available through our organization.

This committee will help make decisions regarding the K-State Research and Extension Website, provide content ideas, suggest guidelines for all the KSRE Webs, and help select features to highlight on our homepage.

We expect this committee to be a virtual team. That is, we will hold our meetings via telephone, e-mail, and Connect. We expect the committee members to spend approximately 90 minutes a month on this responsibility.

Would you be interested, or know someone you'd like to nominate? If so, please e-mail me at lsleicht@ksu.edu . --Linda Sleichter
