Vol. 14, No. 40
August 19, 2008 IN THIS ISSUE... ...Word from the
Associate Director - Extension and Applied Research WORD FROM THE
ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH I was on a family vacation time for the past 10 days to Yellowstone National Park. We were able to take in the wonders of both the landscapes and wildlife. It was truly awesome. Then, I reflected on the landscapes and beauty of Kansas. Some of you might snicker. But, honestly, I really like the quote I picked up from one of Kirk Wiesler's T4D's that goes: Marcel Proust Makes me think of Marci Penner of the Kansas Sampler fame who I heard say once (In my words), Kansas isn't a state for tourists, but rather for explorers. It takes more of an explorer's inquiry and adventure to appreciate what is here. I sure agree with Marci on that point. This state has all the wonders of anywhere in the world. It might just take viewing through new eyes. I hope you can also make a connection with seeing the big picture and in that also seeing new Extension program opportunities. If it seems like a routine, maybe its time to try some new eyes to move it from a routine to an innovative program? Have a great week! - Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@ksu.edu

ANNUAL
PERFORMANCE REVIEW INCLUDED PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PLANS The Professional Development System may be accessed at https://intranet.oznet.ksu.edu/prof%5Fdev/ . To sign in, type ad\ and your eID then enter your password to enter the system. Notice that this \ is different than / and / will not work. The first window that opens is labeled "My Home." At the top of the window throughout the system is a welcome message, "Welcome (your eID)." We'll come back to "My Home," but first let's go to the catalog. Select "catalog" from the list of options at the top of the page. The catalog opens to all of the proposals which have been submitted into the system. They are listed in chronological order by date unless they are independent study, then they are listed alphabetically. Review the opportunities for the coming year. Place a check in the box in the left hand column for each proposal that you are considering for your professional development plan. When you have finished selecting, go to the very bottom of the page and click on "Update/Add to my selections." The system will take you back to "My Home" where you should see a list of those items you selected. To de-select, go back to the Catalog and un-check items, go to the bottom of page and click on "Update/Add to My Selection." Eventually this system will automatically send the list of selected items to an electronic Professional Development Plan, but that isn't ready for this cycle. The form for completing your professional development plan is located on the Professional Development Website: http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/Employee_Resources/DesktopDefault.aspx?tabid=164 . You may choose from Word, WordPerfect documents or a form fillable pdf. Questions about the process or form may be directed to your respective area director or Margaret Phillips, margaret@ksu.edu . --Margaret Phillips
