Vol. 14, No. 48
October 14, 2008 ...Word from the
Associate Director - Extension and Applied Research WORD FROM THE
ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH I view annual conference as a professional meeting, a time we come together to network, to grow, to congratulate, and to learn. With that comes certain obligations and responsibilities for all participants. One obligation is to model professionalism. To me that means looking, acting, preparing, engaging and delivering as a professional. With respect to one of those, I've heard from several of your peers that our "look" has gradually become too casual. As faculty at a professional meeting, I encourage you to dress accordingly, leaving the casual clothes for those activities that call for such dress, and otherwise choose towards business to business dressy attire. In a quote of Albert Einstein's I saw recently, he said, "Setting an example is not the main means of influencing others, it is the only means." I trust you will come to annual conference in this spirit of personal professional growth. The time here is really designed to grow the mind. What you do with the things you observe, learn, and participate in is really up to you. My thanks and appreciation go out to all of you who will have played some role in the success of the 2008 Annual Conference. Thank you! And, have a great week! - Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@ksu.edu

UPDATES
2009 OPEN ENROLLMENT: OCTOBER 1 – 31, 2008 Please carefully review the 2009 Open Enrollment booklet you have received in your department. This booklet provides information about health insurance and KanElect. To enroll or make changes for the plan year 2009, you will need to use
the online State of Kansas Self Service Center (not the KSU self service
center). This is the only method for enrolling or making changes for
2009. Instructions to log in to the State of Kansas Self Service Center
and password schema are as follows: Employees choosing not to go online during open enrollment will remain in the same medical plan in which they are currently in. However, employees will be defaulted into the “tobacco user” category and pay a higher premium for coverage. Employees desiring to participate in the 2009 KanElect dependent care and/or health care flexible spending accounts must enroll during the month of October 2008. Eligible dependent care expenses are incurred 1/1/09-12/31/09. Eligible health care expenses are incurred 1/1/09-12/31/09, with a grace period through March 2009. KanElect enrollment is online and at the end of the health insurance online enrollment. Further information can be found in the 2009 open enrollment booklet. --Division of Human Resources

TECHNOLOGY? We will answer any questions you have about computers, the Internet, and technology in general. We would also love to talk to you about ways to use computers more efficiently in your daily routine. Give us ten minutes and we can save you at least that much every day in useful tips and tricks. We can also show you how to find information you can use on the web, and ways to make sure your computer is always performing at its best. In addition, we will have new products to demonstrate to users, such as a TeraStation network attached storage device and new Lenovo laptops. We would be glad to offer advice to anyone looking to buy new computer equipment or other devices, or ways to make the devices you already have more useful. Plus, we will be demoing some of the new software on the latest 2009 ToolKit. Computers will be available at the Registration table Tuesday, 8 - 5, and Wednesday, 8 - 12, for anyone to use to check e-mail. We will also provide the location of other computers in the Union for your use. --Russ Feldhausen russfeld@ksu.edu and Gary Kepka gkepka@ksu.edu

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITY:
WORKING WITH LATINO AUDIENCES Under this learning model, extension educators will increase their consciousness of the barriers faced by individuals who belong to this demographic farming group, in an environment where the language, values, and traditions are different from your own. In addition to enhancing the capacity of educators to work with socially disadvantaged Latino farmers to conduct sustainable food and farming outreach programs, the experience will provide a unique reflective learning environment for the participants. The trip is February 7 - 18, 2009. We will provide support for three individuals from KSRE to participate in this training/professional development opportunity. If you are interested, please contact Bill Hargrove, KCARE, bhargrov@ksu.edu . Any full time KSRE extension educator or specialist is eligible, but priority for support will be given to: a) county level agricultural and horticultural extension personnel
who are in counties with significant Latino populations; and Applicants will be expected to submit a brief description of why they want to participate and their professional development goals. Applications must be received by Tuesday, October 21. Send to bhargrov@ksu.edu . --Bill Hargrove
MARKETING MINUTE: RESULTS OF STATE
FAIR SURVEY Because this was a convenience sample (and not randomly-selected), it's not possible to generalize the results. But respondents' answers were strikingly similar to results we got from a Summer, 2007 telephone survey of Kansas residents; and to responses from Kansans in a Fall, 2007 focus group project. Here's some of the highlights: * 86.9 percent of the respondents said they were very likely to use the Internet to learn more about a topic that interests them. Local newspapers (52.6 percent) and brochures/reports (47.4 percent) were also rated high as very likely to use. * More than 80 percent of those said they were somewhat or very interested in community development issues; health and nutrition; home and family; environment; lawn and garden; and youth development. More than 61 percent of the respondents were between the ages of 25-44, an audience currently being targeted in K-State Research and Extension's five-year marketing plan. More than 73 percent of those responding rated K-State Research and Extension's booth as good or great, and less than 3 percent said it was below average or poor. Share your thoughts about this or other marketing strategies for K-State Research and Extension at our blog, www.ksremarketingminute.blogspot.com . --Pat Melgares melgares@ksu.edu
