WORD FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH
I suspect everyone has heard the news of the return of Bill Snyder as coach for K-State Football. This news reminds me of a book written by Robert Shoop and Susan Scott entitled Leadership Lessons from Bill Snyder . I made reference to this book at Annual Conference. I encourage you to obtain a copy and read it. Don't read it as a football fan, but as an Extension professional seeking to understand ways to grow and develop into a stronger educator and change agent. Bill Snyder's first five leadership lessons align nicely with Extension work and the importance of setting goals/outcomes, laying out a specific plan to achieve those goals/outcomes, and following that plan. He goes on to talk about creating a vision, as having a vision for your clientele to know and understand about your program priorities, keeping a balance between the long-range goals and your daily work, striving for continuous improvement, and good decision making.

Each of these lessons can be applied to you as a professional and to your Extension programming. A limited number of copies of the book are available in our resource library for Extension. Contact Cheryl Christian, cchristi@ksu.edu to determine availability. Copies can be purchased through the K-State Union Bookstore, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and most bookstores. Happy reading and have a great week! --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@ksu.edu

SAVE-THE-DATE: FACILITATION AND CONFLICT MANAGEMENT WORKSHOPS IN 2009
Making Meetings Work: Introduction to Small Group Facilitation March 4, 2009

Facilitation is a key competency for people in a variety of contexts - working with others on a team-based project, heading up a task force or committee, coordinating the work of others, delivering educational programs, and more. All of these situations need people who can orchestrate and manage effective group processes and dynamics. Make plans now to join us for this informative and practical workshop where you will learn about the tools, practices, behaviors, and strategies that contribute to effective small group facilitation.

Conflict Management Strategies for Extension Professionals April 15, 2009

We all practice conflict management every day - at home, in our communities, and especially at work! Conflict can involve a variety of people and contexts, including: interpersonal conflict such as disagreements with co- workers and clients, intergroup conflict such as disagreements among fair board members, and community-wide conflict such as disagreements over decisions made by county commissioners. How good we are at managing conflict is based on how skilled we are at diagnosing the cause and skillfully taking action to resolve the conflict.

Both events will be held at K-State Salina and registration information will be available in January 2009 - watch the Tuesday Letter for more information. Sponsored by the Leadership Development and Volunteer Development Program Focus Teams. --Robert Wilson rmwilson@k-state.edu
