WORD FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH
Dr. Allan Johnson  , noted author of The Gender Knot and Privilege, Power, and Difference, was on campus this past week to give a luncheon lecture and a Provost's lecture. Dr. Johnson is a writer and speaker who has worked on the issues of social inequality and oppression. As you will see in the video segment, Dr. Johnson was invited to the campus through the work of K-State Research and Extension's initiative on diversity and inclusiveness. Dr. Fred Cholick was instrumental in communicating the desire to bring Dr. Johnson to campus to provide a lecture, dialog, and workshop on such issues as privilege, social inequality, and oppression. I encourage you to view his luncheon speech entitled "Unraveling the Knot of Power & Privilege." To do so, you will want to go to the following link: http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/seminars , and then scroll down the page to the MLK Fellowship Luncheon Seminar listing for January 21. Click on the "recorded presentation."

The opening introduction of Dr. Johnson is given by Dr. Don Boggs, Associate Dean for the College of Agriculture. I encourage you to listen carefully to his words in preparation for what you are about to hear.

Have a great week! --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@ksu.edu

COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE'S BUDGET FORUM
The College of Agriculture's Budget Forum scheduled for January 30th, 8:00 - 9:30 a.m., has been moved from the Union Stateroom to the Hemisphere Room in Hale Library. Please note that the only change is the room location; the date and time is the same as before.

Please plan to attend on January 30th, 8:00 - 9:30 a.m., in the Hemisphere Room, Hale Library. --Dorothy M. Doan ddoan@ksu.edu

IMPORTANT E-MAIL INFORMATION
In order to standardize our e-mail addresses and prepare for future changes, everyone using an @oznet.ksu.edu e-mail address in an e-mail program should change it to @ksu.edu (remove the oznet). That change should be made in any e-mail program you might use at work, at home, or on the road, on desktops, laptops and mobile devices. Doing so will allow you to post messages to various @lists.oznet.ksu.edu addresses, from which all oznet addresses will be deleted.

To find how to make this important change in the most commonly used e-mail programs (Pegasus Mail, Thunderbird, Outlook, Webmail), go to this link: http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/techweb/DesktopDefault.aspx?tabid=804 .

The deadline for making this change is March 16. After that date, IET will remove all @oznet.ksu.edu addresses from the list server, replacing them with @ksu.edu addresses. Mail sent to you at either @ksu.edu or @oznet.ksu.edu will still come to you after the change---you will not lose any e-mail---but only @ksu.edu addresses will be allowed to post to lists, which is why it is important that messages coming from your e-mail program come from an @ksu.edu address.

If before the transition is complete you have problems sending mail to list.oznet.ksu.edu addresses, send a message to support@oznet.ksu.edu  describing the problem and we will fix that list so you to be able to post to it.

If you have any questions, contact support@oznet.ksu.edu or 785-532-6270. --Larry Jackson ljackson@ksu.edu

EXTENSION WEBCAST OFFERS OVERVIEW OF SMALL WIND TURBINES
A February 13 webcast sponsored by an eight-state Extension team, including K-State Research and Extension, will give those interested in wind energy an overview of small wind turbines.

"Basics of Farm/Residential Small Wind Turbines" is from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Central Time. Participants just need a computer with Internet access to take part in the program at http://connect/extension.iastate/edu/nebraska .

Land owners, business owners, local utility representatives and economic development officials all can benefit from the program. Topics include applications, estimating wind turbine production, policies and economics, the process for installing small wind turbines, small wind system components and technology questions.

Presenter is Antonio C. Jimenez of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory/National Wind Technology Center. Jimenez is a member of the NREL Wind Powering America team. He administers NREL's Native American Anemometer Loan Program and provides analysis assistance to tribes contemplating wind energy projects.

Some local Extension offices are hosting this workshop. Check with Extension in your county to see if this workshop will be offered. The webcast is a joint activity of the High Plains Extension Energy Team for Community Development. The High Plains Community Resource Development Energy Team consists of extension professionals in an eight-state High Plains region, including North Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas, Montana, South Dakota and Oklahoma.

KANSAS LIVESTOCK FACILITY COMPOSTING WORKSHOPS
These conferences will provide the latest information for livestock facilities on the how-to of composting both manure and dead animals. Dr. Joe Harner, Kansas State University, Professor - Biological & Agricultural Engineering, will provide the training on manure composting this year. Dr. Bill Eberle, retired KSU Agronomy Extension, will be discussing uses and markets for agricultural compost. Ken Powell, Environmental Scientist, KDHE, will be providing the presentation on emergency livestock disposal and livestock composting. As at earlier conferences, the best reason for being here is to network with livestock producers who are already in the composting business.

February 24 - Dodge City Community College Student Union-Board Room - Dodge City
February 25 - Barton County Community College Extension Campus - Junction City

Why should you attend these conferences?
… Because you are looking for alternatives to the high cost of rendering
… Because you know that composting is more environmentally sound management than burial of your dead animals
… Because the fields closest to your facility are overloaded with nutrients and you cannot afford to haul raw manure to more distant fields
… Moving manure to the fields for application in a timely manner is a problem
… Runoff from your manure storage area is cause for concern

All workshops are from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. Lunch will be provided. The cost will be $40/person. For more information regarding these workshops, contact Jamie Packard at 785-296-1602 or by e-mail at jpackard@kdhe.state.ks.us . Steven M. Graham sgraham@k-state.edu

REGISTER TODAY FOR FACILITATION WORKSHOP ON MARCH 4
Do your PDCs function as effectively as they could? Does your fair board get bogged down when it's time to make decisions? Do your 4H clubs struggle in identifying goals or selecting projects? These are just a few examples of the many situations that Extension professionals face every day when serving on/chairing a committee or task force, coordinating the work of volunteers, and delivering educational programs.

So how can Extension professionals design and facilitate effective meetings and productive small group processes that move groups forward? Effective meetings happen when attention has been paid to the process, not just the content – HOW ideas and issues get discussed and decisions are made are just as important as WHAT gets discussed.

Join us on Wednesday, March 4, 2009, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at K-State Salina for "Making Meetings Work: Small Group Facilitation Skills for Extension Professionals," a practical, hands-on workshop that will develop your personal facilitation skills and increase the effectiveness of groups that you work with every day.

Topics will include:

* Asking the right kinds of questions to move groups forward
* Applying decision-making tools & processes
* Encouraging positive participation & managing disruptive participants
* Overcoming groupthink, decision deadlocks, & polarization

Your learning will be enhanced by applying facilitation skills to real-world scenarios and by utilizing the Facilitation at a Glance guidebook.

The $50 registration fee includes the Facilitation at a Glance guidebook, handouts, lunch, and parking. To register, contact Cheryl Klingensmith at the SE Area Office at 620-431-1530 or e-mail cklingen@oznet.ksu.edu . The deadline to register is February 20.

Sponsored by the Leadership Development, Community Development, and Volunteer Development Program Focus Teams. For more information, contact Robert Wilson at 785-532-7823. --Robert Wilson rmwilson@k-state.edu

MARKETING MINUTE: TRADE SHOW TIPS
Many counties are coming into (or in the midst of) lawn and garden show season. So, in that spirit, here are a few tips for great trade show and booth displays:

-Keep it Visual. People walking past your booth don't have time to read paragraphs, so make sure your display is text-light and graphic-heavy. High quality, dominant photos make a strong first impression.

-Grab Attention. Trade show attendees will only pause a few seconds to glance at your booth. Try to provide something that pulls them in instantly and motivates them to pause longer.

-Stand Out from the Competition. What can you do with your space that will be unique? What do you offer that the booths adjacent to you do not? Find out and capitalize on that difference.

-Give them an experience. Instead of just distributing information, provide attendees the opportunity to do something new or unique. For a lawn and garden show, let them get their hands dirty. Think of how much traffic you can generate when attendees refer to your booth as "the one where I got this free seedling."

-Don't just sit there. It's tempting if you see yourself as introverted, to sit in your booth space and expect people to come to you. Instead, get up and get moving. Don't expect attendees to automatically come to you; go to them and distribute materials in the aisles. Make it worth your time to be there.

Please go to our blog at www.ksremarketingminute.blogspot.com for more information on great booths and other marketing information, or to share your ideas for great trade show booths. --Linda Sleichter lsleicht@oznet.ksu.edu
