WORD FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH
Kirk Weisler was a keynote speaker at our KSRE Annual Conference a few years back. I've continued to receive his T4D (thought for day). A few days back he sent one that really struck home for me, and I suspect for many of you as well. Here is the link to that particular thought:

Goal Primer - Make it Great . Especially for those of us in Extension, setting goals may not have been a part of our family tradition, but it certainly needs to be a part of our Extension tradition. Once goals are established, add to that the need for a comprehensive plan to lead oneself to achieve those goals!

FY2009 Budget Update. At the time of my typing up this message, the Kansas legislature has passed a FY2009 budget bill that calls for higher education to return 4.25% of the current year funds. With Governor Sebelius' signature, we now know the target we must achieve. I believe with the recall of the professional development scholarship funds, added to all the other reductions that were previously planned to meet a 3% target, Extension will be able to meet this 4.25% target.

Now we will await actions by the legislature as they begin to formulate the FY2010 budget.

Have a great week! --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@ksu.edu

K-STATE RESEARCH AND EXTENSION TO CHANGE WEB ADDRESS
Beginning February 2009, K-State Research and Extension will begin phasing in a new homepage Web address, www.ksre.ksu.edu . The change from our old URL, www.oznet.ksu.edu , has been prompted by necessary server changes, and the need for a URL more relevant to our organization. The oznet URL was originally a temporary name that we started using because we needed a domain name while we were undergoing the marketing evaluation and the merger into K-State Research and Extension. Despite it having no connection to our organization’s name, it was never changed.

In the past two years, the oznet portion of our e-mail addresses has been dropped, as has the oznet portion of all our county and district Websites and most of our department Websites. These significant changes have minimized the impact this URL change will have on our organization as a whole.

We will maintain all oznet URLs for at least the next five years, including publication URLs. Anyone entering an oznet URL or hitting a bookmark with the old URL will still be sent to the correct Website. www.ksre.ksu.edu  already directs people to our homepage.

We ask that you begin making this change to your Websites and all printed materials. Additional marketing and promotion of this new URL will be implemented in late spring and early summer. If you have any questions, please direct them to Pat Melgares, melgares@ksu.edu , 785-532-5804. --Kris Boone kboone@ksu.edu

E-MAIL CHANGES
The "list.oznet.ksu.edu" server is getting a new name: "ksre.ksu.edu." E-Mail from the list server will show as coming from "@ksre.ksu.edu" after Feb. 23.

Addresses using the "list.oznet.ksu.edu" extension will still work. However, when you make new references in publications or correspondence, please use "@ksre.ksu.edu."

In a related issue, please change personal e-mail addresses in your e-mail program from "@oznet.ksu.edu" to "@ksu.edu." You need to make the change by March 16. Personal e-mail accounts will NOT use the "@ksre.ksu.edu" address. "Ksre.ksu.edu" will only be used for our list addresses.

If you have further questions about this, please feel free to contact support, support@oznet.ksu.edu , 785-532-6270. --Kris Boone kboone@ksu.edu

MARIE'S PICKS OF THE WEEK
While reviewing the new database for items that are especially effective at helping us understand how our work can be highlighted to share outcomes, impacts, success stories, and public value, this week my picks were reported by Ben Allen and Richard Fechter, Rolling Prairie Extension District #8, Crystal Bashford, Morton County, and Sandra Wick, Smith County.

The market livestock projects are one of the largest, as far as enrollment numbers, through the Rolling Prairie Extension District #8 – Howard Office. Each year, by selling market animals at the fair, members are contributing to the livestock and meat industry in terms of dollars and pounds of meat. Thirty-seven members learned about the impacts of livestock projects on the meat and animal industry in Elk County at a livestock project meeting. In 2007, Elk County 4-H/FFA members produced 17,427 lbs of meat and contributed $18,103.67 to the meat industry.

Sedan (Chautauqua County) was selected along with two other towns in the state to establish a Home Town Prosperity program in the county. Our 'announcement' party established four pillars: youth, leadership, business coaching, and wealth retention.

Success stories:

Morton County 4-Hers attained record-breaking numbers at the 2008 County Fair for entries in all areas: foods, clothing, buymanship, food preservation, photography, and livestock!

Melding of two counties 4-H programs has started with the help of Shooting Sports!

"We can send out newsletters, put up posters and lecture . . . but when producers can SEE actual results of their best (or worst) management) practices, it has a profound effect!"

Sometimes you don't realize how you can make a difference until months or years later. However, this quarter, the bagworm was very active in our county. For some reason, people noticed these, when in previous years the bagworm went unnoticed. Extensive information was provided including pictures and characteristics of the predator along with proper control recommendations. It was simply amazing how many people read the newspaper story and realized they had the bagworm on their shrub or tree. Some even thought that the "bag" was a seedpod. Some even examined their landscape after seeing the information in the local newspaper. --Marie Blythe mblythe@ksu.edu

HORSE PROGRAM UPDATE
We are currently in the process of putting the final edits into the Kansas 4-H Horse Show Rule Book. The newly revised rule book will be available at http://www.kansas4-h.org/Horse/  no later than March 20, 2009. The changes will be put into effect at all 2009 district shows and the Kansas State Fair 4-H Horse Show.

The horse action team voted to restructure the Two-Year-Old and Three-Year-Old Snaffle Bit Projects. Please direct all 4-Hers participating in the Two-Year-Old and/or Three-Year-Old Snaffle Bit Project(s) to the press release at http://www.kansas4-h.org/Horse/TwoThreeYearOld.htm .

Do you have a 4-Her interested in participating in the Two-Year-Old Snaffle Bit Project? The following needs to be sent to the state 4-H office by May 1, 2009 to be eligible to show a two-year-old in the Snaffle Bit Project at the 2009 Kansas State Fair 4-H Horse Show: a completed nomination form, a 4 x 6 color photo of the nominated horse, current 4-H horse ID papers signed by the agents and the $10 fee.

All 4-Hers wishing to show in the Three-Year-Old Snaffle Bit Project, must re-nominate the horse they showed in the Two-Year-Old Snaffle Project to be eligible to show. The nomination process is the same for the Two-Year-Old and Three-Year-Old Snaffle Bit Projects.

If you have any questions, please contact Kaitlyn Crow at kcrow@ksu.edu  or 785-532-0746. --Kaitlyn Crow

MARKETING MINUTE: ELEVATOR SPEECH
The elevator speech is an overview of your company or organization that you can deliver in the time it takes to ride up the elevator. Now, our campus elevators can be pretty slow, but brevity is key for this short synopsis of who we are and what we do.

Below is our version of an elevator speech for K-State Research and Extension. We encourage you to personalize this message and use it any time you have the opportunity. This short speech can help us make people aware of the breadth and depth of information available through K-State Research and Extension.

"Hi. I'm ______. I'm K-State Research and Extension's ___________ agent in _______ County or District. I don't know what you know about K-State Research and Extension, but it's a partnership between local government and Kansas State University, with offices in every county. The agents in those offices distribute research-based information and advice on many topics. We cover environmental issues, health and nutrition, crops and livestock, lawns and gardens, 4-H and families, community development and much more.....giving Kansans the knowledge they need to improve their quality of life and standard of living."
