Vol. 15, No. 29
May 26, 2009 ...Word from the
Associate Director - Extension and Applied Research WORD FROM THE
ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH Extension has been and will always be about developing people. It's about increasing people's knowledge, not for the sake of the knowledge, but rather to increase their capacity to act wisely through that knowledge they have gained. Add to that the great quote by Leo Buscaglia, and I am confident we may well underestimate the power of our caring spirit and desire to listen, understand, and then help others to help themselves. Don't let the busy-ness of work cloud those small acts of caring. Know that those small acts with a colleague, co-worker, client, friend, or total stranger do in fact turn lives around. Have a great week! --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@ksu.edu
K-STATE ZIMBRA IS COMING!
THANK YOU FROM AMY COLLINS We have found a beautiful home to lease for a year here in St. John while we go through the re-building process. It has all been a bit overwhelming, but I do believe with each day we have had something positive come our direction. Again, thank you for all your thoughts and prayers and expressions of support - they have truly helped us through this crazy time! --Amy Collins acollins@ksu.edu

KANSAS COMPOSTING OPERATORS' SCHOOL June 24-25, 2009 - 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Manhattan, KS International Grains Program Conference Center and KSU Agronomy Farm Registration: $160 - Class size limit: 20 To register, contact Troy Lynn Eckart, sprite@ksu.edu For more information: DeAnn Presley, deann@ksu.edu
This workshop is for anyone interested in learning more about compost science and management of a composting facility. Municipal, agricultural, and commercial composters are invited to attend this hands-on, two day composting workshop.
More and more entities are starting to compost a variety of organic materials, including a new clientele: Sale barns and veterinarians. Beginning on October 26, 2009 certain parts (including brains and spinal cords) from cattle 30 months and older will no longer be able to be used in animal or human food. These materials are commonly referred to as specified risk material or cattle material prohibited in animal feed. Both the USDA and the FDA are currently recommending that these materials be disposed by either landfilling or composting. Composting this material is a way of recovering the nutrients for use in agriculture while landfilling not only wastes the nutrients, but it also produces methane, a potent greenhouse gas. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment is currently encouraging the composting of these materials. --DeAnn Presley deann@ksu.edu

MINUTES: ON-LINE CALENDARS, NEWSLETTERS ARE POPULAR WITH KANSANS The survey, conducted in March, 2007 by K-State Research and Extension's Department of Communications, found that K-State Research and Extension users are most interested in four Web features - a current events calendar (89 percent of users wanted this feature), an online newsletter (81 percent), video files (76 percent), and online registration for events and programs (76 percent). In 2004 and 2006 studies, the Department of Communications also found that the number of rural users on dial-up connections in Kansas is decreasing, and high speed connections are increasing. This trend indicates that providing access to high bandwidth features (such as video files) is an opportunity for K-State Research and Extension. Other categories tested in this survey were audio files (40 percent of respondents indicated they would like this feature), discussion board (31 percent), free subscription to a listserv (28 percent), online communication with other users (18 percent), and a chat room (12 percent). Our CMS software offers an online calendar and an e-newsletter module for your use. If you have questions about either of these modules, contact the IET help desk by calling 785-532-4567. --Linda Sleichter lsleicht@ksu.edu
