WORD FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH
I don't usually write about current events. However, the passing of Walter Cronkite caused a few reflections. Growing up with his daily anchoring of the national news, I remember those days and times when he came into our home with news that touched us all. And, he did it with dignity, humility, integrity, a sincere desire to share truth, and yet left it to us to arrive at our own conclusions. I found myself comparing his qualities to that of great Extension workers. I easily came to the conclusion that the qualities exhibited by Walter Cronkite were the qualities of an Extension professional. As you watch this video created by the Texas Cooperative Extension Service, I think you will agree that Walter could have been an Extension Professional.

Nothing more satisfying than knowing that each of you are out there living by the Extension Professional's Creed with pride in being an Extension professional. I too believe in these things. I am an Extension professional. Have a great week! --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@ksu.edu

WORKSITE WELLNESS UPDATE
On behalf of the KSRE Wellness Leadership Team, I want to convey our excitement about the work in progress and provide a brief summary of the steps, or "Seven Benchmarks of Success," that we are following. These benchmarks were outlined by Dr. David Hunnicutt during his presentation at Annual Conference last year.

Benchmark 1: Capture Senior Level Support. We are so fortunate to have strong support from our Director and Associate Director for K-State Research and Extension. Fred and Daryl, thank you for your support, encouragement, and for modeling the way!

Benchmark 2: Create Cohesive Teams. A Workplace Wellness Leadership Team for KSRE is in place, and we will be identifying local/regional teams in the future.

Benchmark 3: Collect Data. This is the step we are currently working on and we need your help. On August 3, you will receive an invitation to participate in a Health Risk Assessment (HRA) called "Wellstream." This HRA is completely confidential and you will receive more details about the questions and the process in the near future. You will also have the opportunity to participate in several other surveys, about needs and interests, over the next 6 months.

These remaining benchmarks will be the focus of the leadership team after the data has been collected:

Benchmark 4: Craft an Operating Plan.
Benchmark 5: Choose Appropriate Interventions.
Benchmark 6: Create Supportive Environments.
Benchmark 7: Carefully Evaluate Outcomes.

As you can see, it will take some time to work through each benchmark. We encourage and invite your suggestions during every step of this process. I also want to express appreciation to Susan Krumm and Denise Sullivan for dedicating their sabbatic work to get us started on this path toward wellness.

Watch for more information, and plan to participate by completing the HRA survey sometime between August 3 and September 18. --Sharolyn Jackson sharolyn@ksu.edu

MARIE’S PICKS . . .
This week my picks (outcomes, considerable public value [benefit to non-participants], and success stories) were reported by extension agents in Central Kansas Extension District, Atchison, Cherokee, Coffey, and Geary Counties:

--Through Gavel Game and Model Meeting Contests, more than 50 youth developed and continue to fine tune their parliamentary skills.

--Youths became more aware of how to develop a budget and the importance of a balanced budget through the 4-H Council budget process.

--Seven youths began to develop their job readiness skills through the application and interview process for the Ambassador Program. Four of the youths were selected to serve as Ambassadors.

--The Flint Hills Tractor Safety Training Course in Emporia is a collaborative effort among Coffey, Morris, Chase, and Lyon County Extension. In a partnership with PrairieLand Partners, Farm Bureau, and the Flint Hills Antique Tractor Club, a two-day session covers comprehensive safety material, hands-on learning, and an evaluation process involving written exams and follow-ups. In one of our larger classes, nearly 40 youth from throughout the four-county area participated. We served sponsored meals and offered hands-on activities including a grain flow demonstration and tractor/implement walk-arounds. All of the participants earned a passing grade. Throughout the course, great discussion was held and the youth were very engaged. Perhaps as important, the parents also had the opportunity to participate in discussion and many expressed that they had learned as much or more than the kids. Through opportunities such as this, we are providing a valuable service to our agriculture industry by training youth to be responsible and safety-minded employees. This, in turn, provides for less "down time" due to accidents or faulty equipment. Time is money and those who have the safety certification make more productive and profitable employees to our producers.

--Many youths, who would be unlikely to attend, participate in the Geary County Free Fair because of the collaboration between the Junction City Arts Council and the Geary County Free Fair (by way of Extension). These youths were responsible for approximately 75 entries in the open class division of the fair. While these young artists and their parents attend the fair to see their entries, they learn more about 4-H and have a positive experience that will help bond them to the community. Social research has shown that youth are less likely to engage in risky behavior when they feel bonded to the community. --Marie Blythe mblythe@ksu.edu
