WORD FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH
State Extension Advisory Council (SEAC) will be meeting in Phillipsburg later this month. As a reminder, the SEAC is an elected body of current and past Extension Board Chairs from across the state. This advisory group includes the following individuals. Kevin Journagen (Shawnee) serving as chair; Jerry Dreher (Allen), vice-chair; Judy Parsons (Stevens), secretary; Jo Ann Murray (Atchison), treasurer; Bob Gottlob (Cowley), past chair. Additional members include Steve Long (Greeley), Bryan Brauer (Ford), Brad Fuller (Kearny), Kelly Overmiller (Smith), Dan Johnson (Ellsworth), Andy Sramek (Rawlins), Donita Sparks (Logan), Janell Harman (McPherson), Tresa Jones (Meadowlark), John Kramer (Geary), Carolyn Harms (Sedgwick), Gary Price (Douglas), Larry Turner (Sedgwick), Michele Janson (Johnson), Jerry Hall (Montgomery), Jay Weseloh (Woodson), and Julia Strnad (Sumner).

Our meetings with SEAC generally include an afternoon and evening of tours and showcasing some of the K-State Research & Extension programs and facilities near the location of our meetings. This meeting in Phillipsburg we will be taking a look at some of the innovative programming in Northwest Kansas relating to communities, families, and youth. We will also tour the Dane Hansen Museum in Logan, and then hold our business meeting at the Huck Boyd Foundation conference center in Phillipsburg.

Some discussions we will be having with the SEAC will include a report from the SEAC members who attended the Public Issues, Leadership Development Conference in Washington DC back in April, an overview of our progress on implementing the Extension Strategic Plan, approaches to declining budgets, discussions around organizing districts, and review of selected administrative policies. This dialog is valuable as we formulate key decisions and approaches to keeping the partnership and programs strong locally.

We also provide updates from the area and assistant directors on timely topics. And, we offer a time for the SEAC members to raise issues and ideas with your Extension administrative team.

The SEAC meets twice annually. We will be meeting again in February 2010 in Topeka.

If you have a SEAC delegate from your District or County, I hope you will touch base with that individual and thank them for their attendance at the upcoming meeting in Phillipsburg.

Have a great week! --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@ksu.edu

LOOK TO AGING FOR FUTURE CAREERS
The Adult Development and Aging Program Focus Team (AD&A PFT) invites you to attend and/or host the Look to Aging for Future Careers presentation. You may attend as an individual who is interested in the topic for personal and professional growth, or you may host the presentation for other interested individuals or agencies in your local communities. As an example, AD&A PFT members plan on hosting the presentation in schools, at their local county offices, and with interested aging-related organizations.

Presentation Description
Did you know that the world is growing older? In 2002, people over the age of 65 accounted for about 7 percent of the world's population. By 2050, the number of older adults is expected to rise to nearly 17 percent (U.S. Census Bureau, 2004).

What does this mean for you? The Association for Gerontology in Higher Education reports that the growth of an older population world-wide will result in an increasing need for professionals who understand the aging process and the needs of the older adult population. This growth will be evident across disciplines, not just in medicine and health care (2009). The field of gerontology is devoted to the study of aging, and K-State's Center on Aging provides gerontology courses, programs, and degrees for students on campus and online.

Are you interested in learning more? Then please join us for the free presentation, Look to Aging for Future Careers, by Gayle Doll, Ph.D, Director of the K-State Center on Aging. The presentation will be broadcast live-via-webcast on October 13, 2009 from 1:30 - 2:30 p.m. CT.

How Do I Attend?
All you need to participate in this Adobe Connect presentation is a computer with a web browser (such as Internet Explorer or Firefox) and a pair of computer speakers.

If you are a first-time user of Adobe Connect, please test your computer for use before the date of the presentation at http://connect.ksre.ksu.edu/common/help/en/support/meeting_test.htm . This will resolve most connection and interface problems.

To enter the presentation on October 13, simply click on the following link a few minutes before 1:30 p.m.: http://connect.ksre.ksu.edu/pftada/

MARIE’S PICKS . . .
This week my picks (outcomes and success stories) were reported by extension agents in Phillips-Rooks District, Coffey and Neosho Counties, and a specialist in 4-H Youth Development:

--Youths who attended the babysitting clinic learned how to schedule jobs and run a small-scale business. They made flyers and marketed their business on community bulletin boards—good preparation for their present, as well as their future!

--Twenty-three issues of "The Healthy Kids Times" nutrition newsletters for parents and children are available on the Kansas Family Nutrition Program Website, http://www.humec.ksu.edu/fnp/ , for use by Extension educators. Extension agents have communicated their appreciation for these new, easy to use, quality newsletters that tie in with the subject matter that they often present in Kansas schools. These newsletters are also being sent home with students to extend the nutrition education into the home. With the completion of the translation to Spanish, Kansas Extension educators are able to expand their nutrition programming from the classroom to the family homes where Spanish is primarily spoken.

--As a result of providing radon kits, 15 households were tested to see if radon was in the home. Because of this knowledge, household occupants reduced their risk of negative health conditions such as lung cancer.

--Participants in a Foods Safety program gained practical knowledge that would help them in their group homes. They improved their personal food handling skills and learned the correct temperatures for their freezers and refrigerators. --Marie Blythe mblythe@ksu.edu

IDEAS FOR FUND RAISING PROJECTS?
Last week, we had a great tragedy in Southwest Kansas. We lost two young women in a car accident. One of the women, Rita Perez, was to begin her fourth year in the dietetics program here at K-State. She was very excited about becoming a dietician. She was known for her work with diabetic children.

As you can imagine, her family is quite devastated, and not having planned for their daughter's untimely death, they had no burial insurance. If you have any idea as a fund raising project, please share with me. In the mean time, you can send condolences to the family: Rita Gisela Perez garnandfh@sbcglobal.net .

Memorial Contributions may be sent to
Garnand Funeral Home
412 N. 7th St.
Garden City, KS 67846
Be sure to note: Rita Gisela Perez

COMMUNICATIONS MINUTE
Each K-State Research and Extension employee is the voice of the organization, so what we say and how we say it makes a difference in how people view us.

KSRE's "brand voice" applies to many forms of communication: e-mail, publishing to Website, writing letters, and more.

In all cases, you should communicate in a tone that is genuine, confident and knowledgeable. Here are some tips to help you do this:

* Avoid jargon. Use language your audience understands.
* Speak slowly.
* Write and talk clearly and briefly.
* In writing, list items as bullet points.
* Prepare and use talking points, or a short list of central ideas.
* When taking questions from an audience, listen intently. Don't rush to answer.
* Communicate in an active voice, not passive.

More ideas for expressing the K-State Research and Extension brand will be included in a soon-to-be-released Branding Guide, expected out this fall. --Pat Melgares melgares@ksu.edu
