August 18, 2009 ...Word from the
Associate Director - Extension and Applied Research WORD FROM THE
ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH Our meetings with SEAC generally include an afternoon and evening of tours and showcasing some of the K-State Research & Extension programs and facilities near the location of our meetings. This meeting in Phillipsburg we will be taking a look at some of the innovative programming in Northwest Kansas relating to communities, families, and youth. We will also tour the Dane Hansen Museum in Logan, and then hold our business meeting at the Huck Boyd Foundation conference center in Phillipsburg. Some discussions we will be having with the SEAC will include a report from the SEAC members who attended the Public Issues, Leadership Development Conference in Washington DC back in April, an overview of our progress on implementing the Extension Strategic Plan, approaches to declining budgets, discussions around organizing districts, and review of selected administrative policies. This dialog is valuable as we formulate key decisions and approaches to keeping the partnership and programs strong locally. We also provide updates from the area and assistant directors on timely topics. And, we offer a time for the SEAC members to raise issues and ideas with your Extension administrative team. The SEAC meets twice annually. We will be meeting again in February 2010 in Topeka. If you have a SEAC delegate from your District or County, I hope you will touch base with that individual and thank them for their attendance at the upcoming meeting in Phillipsburg. Have a great week! --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@ksu.edu

LOOK TO AGING
FOR FUTURE CAREERS Presentation Description What does this mean for you? The Association for Gerontology in Higher Education reports that the growth of an older population world-wide will result in an increasing need for professionals who understand the aging process and the needs of the older adult population. This growth will be evident across disciplines, not just in medicine and health care (2009). The field of gerontology is devoted to the study of aging, and K-State's Center on Aging provides gerontology courses, programs, and degrees for students on campus and online. Are you interested in learning more? Then please join us for the free presentation, Look to Aging for Future Careers, by Gayle Doll, Ph.D, Director of the K-State Center on Aging. The presentation will be broadcast live-via-webcast on October 13, 2009 from 1:30 - 2:30 p.m. CT. How Do I Attend? MARIE’S PICKS .
. . --Youths who attended the babysitting clinic learned how to schedule jobs and run a small-scale business. They made flyers and marketed their business on community bulletin boards—good preparation for their present, as well as their future! --Twenty-three issues of "The Healthy Kids Times" nutrition newsletters for parents and children are available on the Kansas Family Nutrition Program Website, http://www.humec.ksu.edu/fnp/ , for use by Extension educators. Extension agents have communicated their appreciation for these new, easy to use, quality newsletters that tie in with the subject matter that they often present in Kansas schools. These newsletters are also being sent home with students to extend the nutrition education into the home. With the completion of the translation to Spanish, Kansas Extension educators are able to expand their nutrition programming from the classroom to the family homes where Spanish is primarily spoken. --As a result of providing radon kits, 15 households were tested to see if radon was in the home. Because of this knowledge, household occupants reduced their risk of negative health conditions such as lung cancer. --Participants in a Foods Safety program gained practical knowledge that would help them in their group homes. They improved their personal food handling skills and learned the correct temperatures for their freezers and refrigerators. --Marie Blythe mblythe@ksu.edu
IDEAS FOR
FUND RAISING PROJECTS? As you can imagine, her family is quite devastated, and not having planned for their daughter's untimely death, they had no burial insurance.
