WORD FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH
Following is an announcement regarding a GREAT opportunity for professional development with somewhat of a short fuse on it. Don't pass up the opportunity to apply for this training. We've had 4 individuals from K-State Research and Extension participate in this training previously, and they were very strong advocates to bring this training to Kansas. So, here is a great opportunity for about 20 individuals within our system who want to grow around Stephen Covey's approach to becoming highly effective. Recognize that while the registration is $175 per person, this basically covers the lodging and meals at Rock Springs 4-H Center. An additional set of training materials and outstanding presenters are being provided to you at no extra cost! Please read on, and have a great week! - Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@ksu.edu

THE 7 HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE WORKSHOP, NOVEMBER 3-5, 2009
The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People for K-State Research and Extension Professionals Program has a strong emphasis on effectiveness in the workplace. Based on the best-selling business book by the same name, this three-day workshop experience provides the foundation to strengthen the human side of performance at the personal, managerial, and organizational levels. The content helps build a stronger organization by strengthening and exercising the character and competence of the individual employee.

K-State Research and Extension professionals will be equipped with the tools and skills to work at the highest levels of effectiveness, both with and through others.

This intensive three day workshop is on November 3 - 5, 2009 at Rock Springs Ranch. It will be led by a training team from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension. The workshop begins at 9 a.m. on Tuesday and ends at 2 p.m. on Thursday. K-State Research and Extension administration will cover the cost of the workshop materials. Participant registration costs are $175 which includes meals and lodging.

Past Kansas participants in the 7 Habits training are Cade Rensink, Joel DeRouchey, Stacey Warner and Margaret Phillips. Contact them to learn more.

Registration is due by October 16. The registration form is available on the Employee Resources Website > Registration. --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@ksu.edu , Margaret Phillips margaret@ksu.edu

THANK YOU FOR HELPING MAKE THE STATE FAIR A SUCCESS
As most of you know, I serve on the State Fair Board and spent nine days at the Fair. As the director and board member I want to thank all the Extension agents and faculty who helped make the State Fair a success. I had the opportunity to visit with Extension agents and watch them in action and was very impressed.

The 4-Hers who gave the presentations to the Governor did a great job and he told me that he was impressed.

To a select group of Abe's and Mary's (they know who they are), I just want to say hello and look forward to seeing you at annual conference.

Thanks again to all of you involved with State Fair for your dedication to all those who we serve. --Fred Cholick fcholick@ksu.edu

TIME TO REGISTER FOR THE K-STATE RESEARCH AND EXTENSION ANNUAL CONFERENCE
The deadline for submitting posters for the October 20 poster session has been extended to today, September 22. Conference registrations are due October 6.

Go to http://www.ksre.ksu.edu/annconf  for the registration forms, the full schedule, speaker bios, and hotel information.

Remember that you must register for the conference to attend the free awards luncheon.

The conference theme is "Live Well, Work Well: Securing the Future." The committee hopes that you will participate and enjoy the conference. --Kris Boone, Conference Committee Chair, kboone@ksu.edu

DO YOU NEED A NEW NAME BADGE?
All participants attending the upcoming Annual Conference, October 20-22, 2009, will be requested to wear their K-State Research and Extension name badges.

If you have never received a name badge, if you still have one of the old variety, or if you wish to purchase a new badge, e-mail Sue Robinson, srobinso@ksu.edu .

Be sure to specify the kind of backing you want - magnet, clip or pin - and specify how you want your name on the badge. There is not room for titles, but department, area, county, district, or research center will be shown if you desire. The alternative I like is just your name below the K-State Research and Extension brand.

Each new employee, at the instructor level or above, receives his/her first name badge free of charge. Counties, districts, areas and departments are encouraged to order name badges for other employees and will be invoiced in the amount of $6 for each name badge.

If a new name badge is needed, please order immediately so we can get it sent to you prior to the conference. --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@ksu.edu

THANK YOU FROM NOZELLA BROWN
From the bottom of my heart I'm beyond grateful for all the love, support, encouragement and comfort we received from my Extension family during this season of bereavement. I was overwhelmed by the outpouring of e-mails, cards, gifts and other expressions of concern for my family. My father will be greatly missed, but we find healing in God's tender embrace, and in knowing that others remembered and cared. Thank you for keeping us in your thoughts and prayers. --Nozella Brown nozellabrown@earthlink.net

FALL 2009 ENGAGEMENT INCENTIVE GRANTS, REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS
Deadline: 5:00 p.m. – November 2, 2009

The Center for Engagement and Community Development solicits proposals from tenured and tenure-track faculty, full-time instructors, and KSRE faculty for projects that will lead to enhanced engagement in teaching, research, and/or outreach. These grants are intended to provide seed money to faculty who would like to incorporate engagement into their instructional, research, and/or outreach programs.

Activities supported by this program should lead to a larger project concept and the submission of a proposal for external funding. While preference will be given to sustainable projects that have potential long-term impact (i.e. 5-10 years), proposed projects should also be able to show tangible results in the short-term (i.e. 2 years). Proposals should clearly outline both the short-term and the potential long-term outcomes.

These grants are not intended to provide support for established areas of teaching, research or outreach, or previously funded projects.

Agents with community project ideas are encouraged to call Dan Kahl, 785-532-5840. --Dan Kahl dankahl@ksu.edu

COMMUNICATION MINUTE: TIPS MAKE APPLICATION SHINE
Written communications can represent you when you can't be present to represent yourself. If, for example, applying for a grant, leadership program, committee or appointment, nominating a colleague for a well-earned award, or, for that matter, preparing your annual evaluation, use these communications tips to shine:

* Start early to allow plenty of time for preparation.

* Read the guidelines (i.e. type size, word length, etc.), instructions, and, if available, criteria for selection, before choosing "selected" accomplishments that reflect the desired skills, impact, or criteria.

Unless otherwise specified, list in chronological order, and keep descriptions brief and readable, so as not to wear out the evaluator. And, if absolutely necessary, use an * to note that more information is available upon request.

* Stick to the facts. Keep your opinion in check, yet move the reader/evaluator to developing a favorable reaction to your application.

* Keep sentences to fewer than 18-20 words, and paragraphs to fewer than 11 lines to hold the reader/evaluator’s interests.

* Use standard business formatting, especially for electronic submissions, as evaluators may not have the same capabilities and/or word-processing systems.

* Check names, dates, numbers, etc.

* Let a draft rest a week or more before reading, editing and polishing. When doing so, re-read the instructions and review guidelines, criteria, etc., to make sure that you have done the best possible job in matching qualifications to the opportunity.

* A writer or creator is typically the least likely person to catch an error. Ask someone who knows nothing about the content to proofread the document to catch basic errors. If subject specific or technical, asking a colleague familiar with such subjects to review the draft also can be helpful.

* Send your application with a signature required (unless directions specify otherwise) well ahead of the deadline.

The longest application is not always the most likely to succeed. In reviewing more than a dozen award applications recently, shorter, to-the-point nominations highlighting specific accomplishments, results/impact proved to be the most successful. --Nancy Peterson nancyp@ksu.edu
