WORD FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH
I'm really pushing YOU to participate in the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People Workshop coming up November 3 -5, 2009 at Rock Springs 4-H Center. We still have room for roughly 10 more individuals to sign up! This is too great an opportunity to not have a totally full class.

Registration information is located on Employee Resources Website .

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People for K-State Research and Extension Professionals Program has a strong emphasis on effectiveness in the workplace. Based on the best-selling business book by the same name, this three-day workshop experience provides the foundation to strengthen the human side of performance at the personal, managerial, and organizational levels. The content helps build a stronger organization by strengthening and exercising the character and competence of the individual employee.

You will be equipped with the tools and skills to work at the highest levels of effectiveness, both with and through others.

This intensive workshop is November 3 - 5, 2009 at Rock Springs Ranch, running from 9 a.m. on Tuesday to 2 p.m. on Thursday. We are covering the cost of the workshop presenters and materials centrally. Participant registration costs are only $175 which includes all meals and lodging.

Past Kansas participants in the 7 Habits training are Cade Rensink, Joel DeRouchey, Stacey Warner and Margaret Phillips. Contact them to learn more.

Registration is due by October 16. Have a great week! - Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@ksu.edu

"TUESDAY LETTER" SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
Deadline for submission of an article into the "TUESDAY LETTER" is by 12 noon on Monday of each week. Submissions received after 12 noon on Monday will be held until the next week. Occasionally, because of network problems or e-mail problems, items sent in a timely manner are not always received immediately so last minute articles might not arrive in time to be included in that week's Tuesday.

Emergency announcements can create the urgency to submit something later than that, and still get it into that week's Tuesday Letter. However, procrastination does not create the emergency or urgency.

PLEASE send your submissions to tuesday@ksre.ksu.edu and not to Sue Robinson directly. Thank you for your cooperation. --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@ksu.edu

"PRACTICAL EVALUATION FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS: WHAT QUESTIONS DO I ASK NOW IN ORDER TO TELL THE DIFFERENCE(S) MY WORK MAKES?"
The Youth Development Program Focus Team is very pleased to announce the following training opportunity on Wednesday, October 21, 2009, here in Manhattan, during KSRE Annual Conference:

Dr. Melissa Cater from Louisiana State University will share from her personal experiences as an agent and teaching Extension educators how to include evaluation as you create and implement your youth development efforts. Learning to ask better questions in order to retrieve useful feedback for programmatic improvement and reporting will be taught and practiced. Dr. Cater has generously offered to continue to follow up with participants, knowing that we "take one bite of the apple at a time."

Dr. Cater is a 4-H Youth Development Educator with the Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service, LSU AgCenter working in Organizational Development & Evaluation. She has 17 years experience in formal and nonformal education. For the past 10 years Dr. Cater's work has included direct services for youth with an emphasis on leadership of non-formal educational 4-H clubs and management of volunteers who work both directly and indirectly with youth. As part of her work she has led and participated in collaborations with other youth organizations. Much of her work has centered on developing youth-adult partnerships and promoting youth ownership and engagement in afterschool programming. Before joining the LSU AgCenter, she was a classroom teacher certified at the secondary level for 6.5 years. Dr. Cater holds a doctorate in Human Resource Education at Louisiana State University.

We begin at 8:15 a.m. in the K-State Union Room 205 lasting through 11:30 a.m.. We return after lunch for a one hour wrap up between 1-2 p.m. with Dr. Cater.

We look forward to having you join us. Please let Aliesa Woods, awoods@ksu.edu  or Gary Gerhard, ggerhard@ksu.edu , know if you plan on coming so we can have an idea of our count, and also let us know of further questions you might have. --Aliesa Woods and Gary Gerhard

HAPPY BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH!
K-State's Johnson Cancer Research Center is hosting the "Think Pink" Quilt Show throughout October. It is presented by the Konza Prairie Quilters Guild, and all the quilts (and a couple of non-quilt items) have pink highlights. It's lovely and impressive! Visit the center at 17th Street and Claflin Road (on campus) anytime 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday. Enter through the limestone-walled courtyard on 17th Street. There are two free guest parking spaces a few feet down from there.

The center will have a special Open House to view the quilts at 1:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, October 14 (to coincide with the breast cancer awareness luncheon discussed below). Parking permits are not needed (for non-24-hour-reserved spaces) in the lots after 5 p.m.

The deadline for the "In The Pink" breast cancer awareness luncheon, presented by the Manhattan Cancer Awareness Committee & American Cancer Society, Wednesday, October 14, at the Family & Child Resource Center, 2101 Claflin Road, was actually Friday, October 9. If you would like to go to the lunch, you might still be able to get a reservation by calling Marcia Locke at the Johnson Cancer Research Center, 785-532-6705, or e-mailing marcia@k-state.edu. The cost is $8. The presenters will be Jeanice Janke, lead mammogram technician at Women's Imaging Center and cancer survivor, and Marcia Locke, public relations and outreach coordinator for the Johnson Cancer Research Center. All participants will receive lunch (from Planet Sub) and "goodie bags," and door prizes will be given away. You must have a reservation to attend.

Information about both events is at www.cancer.k-state.edu , under "Upcoming Events". Further information is available by contacting Marcia Locke at the Johnson Cancer Research Center, 785-532-6705, or marcia@k-state.edu . --Marcia Locke

CHANGE OF STATUS FOR SOME FIRST QUARTER PUBLICATIONS
Two publications that were on the First Quarter Order Form are being deadfiled and will no longer be available -- MF2640 Dining with Health in Mind and MF2667 Caregiver Resilience and Vitality. The Rally Obedience Dog Show Rule Book, 4H965, is undergoing major revision and should not be ordered from the First Quarter Order Form. It will appear on the February New and Revised Order Form (which will be sent out in early November) and may be ordered at that time. --Linda Gilmore lindagi@ksu.edu

MARIE’S PICKS . . .
This week my picks (outcomes and success stories) were reported by Larry Crouse and Barbara Roths in Butler County.

Outcomes
Twenty-two property owners learned how to tell the difference between pine wilt and diplodia tip blight, which disease can be treated, and how to treat it with the proper material at the proper time.

Twenty-four hardy older adults who attended Life Enrichment at Butler Community College (despite the weather) reviewed portion control and often expressed surprise at the amount of fats and sugars in foods. They compared the number of calories in fats, sugar, and flour, then identified types of fats in foods, creating their own fats/oils display. Participants tasted a banana bread recipe that included flax seed and hard white whole wheat. They also tried Cranberry Salsa, a seasonal recipe that used the artificial sweetener, Splenda. After the workshop, one participant commented: "My husband just had by-pass surgery and this information was just what we needed!" Another participant called the next week to get more specific information on how to use the artificial sweetener in holiday baking.

Success Stories
As a result of Extension educational programs promoting the benefits of using expanded shale as a soil additive, two nurseries in Butler County now carry the expanded shale product. Along with its increased use, the homeowners that committed to trying the shale experienced very positive results. --Marie Blythe mblythe@ksu.edu

COMMUNICATION MINUTE
With families trying to trim food budgets and eat more healthful foods, home vegetable gardening has been growing in popularity. K-State Research and Extension horticulture experts have been teaching folks how to garden for years, so this trend presents an opportunity to highlight that expertise and reach new audiences.

As you look for ways to enhance programming, consider the "Kansas Garden Guide," S51. This update of the longtime favorite offers tips for garden planning and care, harvest and storage of common vegetables, as well as new vegetable varieties, many suitable for small spaces.

As you plan for the upcoming year, think beyond traditional audiences, and consider using this publication in 4-H Youth Development, with seniors, or in EFNEP programs. The 84-page, full-color guide appears on the current order form at a cost of $3.50. Here’s a preview: http://www.ksre.ksu.edu/library/DesktopModules/ViewDocument.aspx?DocumentID=1241 .

The guide will be delivered in time for winter garden shows. Remember that you may be able to recoup costs for publications through program registration fees.

Our Publications and Videos site has changed. To order before the pre-print deadline of October 30, use the current order form mailed to your office or visit the site at: http://www.ksre.ksu.edu/library/DesktopDefault.aspx?tabid=16 . Select Select Draft Publications from the menu on the left, then Drafts for Employees, and finally, Draft Publications from the menu on the left, then Drafts for Employees, and finally, New Publication Order Form.
