WORD FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH
I had mentioned in an earlier Tuesday Letter, the Kansas County Clerks and Election Officials Association had introduced a bill in the Senate (SB420) to change the filing deadline for Extension District candidates to the same as that of a City/School Election. This bill would move the deadline 5 weeks earlier than the current filing deadline. The current deadline causes issues with programming machines and printing ballots in a timely manner for the General Elections held the first Tuesday in April. They have asked for the support of K-State Research and Extension for Senate Bill 420. Dr. Sue Peterson, K-State Government Relations, will be carrying a letter to the Senate hearing this Thursday, February 11, 2010. K-State Research and Extension will be indicating our understanding of the desire for the change and that we are not opposed to such change.

This week I am off to an learning experience with the Kansas Leadership Center (KLC) involving civic leadership context and competencies. The KLC was founded in 2007 through a $30 million investment from the Kansas Health Foundation . If you are not familiar with the KLC, I would encourage you to take a look at their website. They have numerous leadership capacity building opportunities that I believe would be a great asset to you. One of those is the 14th Annual K-State Leadership Seminar , featuring "Adaptive Leadership: Leading in Permanent Crisis." If you have questions, don't hesitate to contact me.

Have a great week! --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@ksu.edu

TRAINING SESSION ON USING TURNING POINT AUDIENCE RESPONSE SYSTEM TODAY
There will be an online training session on using the Turning Point Audience Response System today (Tuesday) from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. We will be covering how to install the software, create basic question slides, work with participant lists, and collect data using the software. We will also have a quick sharing session at the end for any questions or good ideas anyone has to share.

The session will be done live via Adobe Connect. If you would like to attend, please go to http://connect.ksre.ksu.edu/techsupport  before 3 p.m. to enter the meeting room. EVERYONE READY, ONLINE VOLUNTEER MANAGEMENT SEMINAR
There's Still Time
If you haven't watched the current seminar yet, schedule time to do so and take care of yourself (and your volunteers) by developing your professional skills. Hint: time management is the focus of Part 1 of this seminar!

To access the seminar go to: http://nextgeneration.4-h.org/volunteerism , if you are already registered, just log in and go to the current seminar. If you have not yet registered, click on the registration form link and follow the directions.

Current Seminar:  Pitfalls and Obstacles to Volunteer Involvement:
Not just another pep talk about volunteers!
This seminar acknowledges all the positives about volunteer involvement and then "gets real" about some of the hard challenges and serious concerns that often surface. Where to find the time? Is it OK to fire a volunteer? How to give volunteers a role in directing their work? When to say no? Join the dialogue.

How This Topic Relates To You:
This seminar is based on the questions we hear from Everyone Ready participants and other colleagues dealing with the realities of working with volunteers on a daily basis. For example, we've devoted all of Part 1 to the topic of time management and how to get help in supporting volunteers. Part 2 gives you ways to deal with possible resistance to involving new types of volunteers. Part 3 deals with the "scary" things like risk, aging volunteers, and how to fire a volunteer (if you can't troubleshoot early enough to prevent having to do so).

If you have questions or wish help getting started please contact me. --Rod Buchele rbuchele@ksu.edu

HELP IDENTIFY APPLICANTS FOR THE KANSAS 4-H GIS/GPS TASK FORCE
This task force will help provide leadership in developing Kansas 4-H GIS/GPS programs. The task force will be comprised of youth (ages 13-18) and adults (volunteers, agents, educators, community partners) who have a strong desire to take an active role in supporting 4-H GIS and community mapping programs at state and local levels. Qualifying members may also apply to serve on the National 4-H GIS/GPS Leadership Team. Additional details and state and national team applications are available at http://www.kansas4h.org/DesktopDefault.aspx?tabid=303 . Applications are due Monday, March 8.

Knowing Kansas 4-H GIS/GPS programming is in early stages of development, youth and/or adults are being sought who may or may not have previous GIS experience. Most importantly applicants should have a strong desire to learn more about GIS and its applications in our society and a willingness to provide leadership in working with 4-H and other youth to increase the use and understanding of GPS and GIS in Kansas. --Beth Hecht bhecht@ksu.edu
