WORD FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH
I am on Kirk Weisler's "Thought for the Day," and one I received very recently struck a cord with me, as it had to do with trust.
Kirk quotes Stephen Covey, author of 7 Habits of Highly Effective People,
'One of the most important ways to manifest integrity is to be loyal to those who are not present. In doing so, we build the trust of those who are present.'
Then he goes on to tell of a time where Stephen Covey was asked what could be done to build or rebuild trust after it was lost. His reply was profoundly simple, he said, 'Make a promise and keep it. It doesn't matter whether it is big or small.. After you have kept your promise' do it again.'
Reminds me of the wisdom that our former Dean/Director Fred Cholick shared on numerous occasions. 'No one can take away your integrity, you have to give it away.'
Lots of savvy advice in a few simple, but powerful quotes.
And, speaking of Stephen Covey, I want you all to know that we are working with the University of Nebraska Extension Team again this year to bring the 7 Habits training opportunity back to K-State Research and Extension. If you are interested you should put a hold on your calendar for the week of November 29. Be watching for more information in the coming months.
Have a great K-State Spring Break week, and cheer on the Cats in the NCAAs!!! --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@ksu.edu

BENCHMARKING YOUR SUCCESS - REMINDER
The next time that someone wants to know about the
impact of your local PRIDE program, you will have all the information
that you need to highlight the importance of your PRIDE work to your
community. This training is for all PRIDE communities and we encourage
each community to send a delegation to participate in one of the
following trainings, which will be presented by Trudy Rice and/or
Jeanne Stinson from the Kansas PRIDE program.
March 29 in Lenora, KS at the Lenora Library April 5 in Perry, KS at the Perry American Legion Building April 12 in Larned, KS at the J.A. Haas Exhibit Building April 15 in Humboldt, KS at the Humboldt Library April 19 in Park City, KS at the Park City PRIDE Building
Note: All trainings will be from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Buildings will be open at
5:30 with refreshments available. The meeting will start promptly at
6 p.m.
During the training you will learn how to
collect the information you need to tell the story of your PRIDE
program to the people who need to know. Everyone will go home with a
'tight, bright, and to the point' message about the importance of PRIDE
to your community as well as knowledge on how to collect the right
information and who to share it with. The ability to tell your story
to the right people will enhance your community's ability to access
outside resources.

MARIE'S PICKS . . .
Last week, I received another testimonial that is also an example of public value (benefit to non-participants). Megan Kennelly, Assistant Professor in Plant Pathology, who specializes in horticultural crops, and her colleagues send an e-mail newsletter to 800+ subscribers about turf and landscape issues, mostly plant diseases. The newsletter is geared toward professional turf and landscape, not directly to homeowners. Many extension agents also subscribe to the e-mail newsletter.
Megan recently received the following comment from a subscriber who works for a turf/landscape supply company that covers several states. "Megan: I would like to take a moment to THANK YOU for all the valuable information you send out all the time, you do a great job. I travel a six state area and you and KSU have the best information sent to us, better then ANY other university. THANK YOU again, keep up the great work, I truly appreciate what you do." --Marie Blythe mblythe@ksu.edu
