WORD FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH
I am pleased and excited to announce that we have received Attorney General approval for the creation of 4 new Extension Districts beginning July 1, 2010. Those new Districts are as follows:
Extension District #10 (Southwind) - Allen and Neosho Extension District #11 (Frontier) - Osage and Franklin Extension District #12 (has no local name as yet) - Logan and Trego Extension District #13 (Flint Hills) - Morris and Chase
I extend my congratulations for all the hard work that has gone into this process by the Extension Agents, Extension Board and Council members, County Commissioners, Extension administrative team, and all others involved in reaching to this point. Having 4 new Extension Districts organizing in one year is a new record.
I also extend my thanks and encouragement to all the same groups of individuals in counties where serious discussions and work is underway to move towards creating or joining a District in 2011. You may recall that I laid out a series of goals for organizing districts back in the May 19, 2009 issue of the Tuesday Letter. Those goals were to have at least 40 counties organized into districts by July 2011, 75 by 2013, and essentially all counties who were ever going to organize into districts by 2015.
With the addition of 8 more counties in districts as of July 2010, we now will stand at 33 counties operating within districts. With work underway in other counties, I believe we are on track to achieve the goal of 40 by July 2011!!
Thanks for all your continued diligence and hard work towards making K-State Research and Extension relevant, valued, and sustainable! Have a great week! --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@ksu.edu
P.S. May is a month of graduations and celebrations. I encourage you to all be "balcony people," per Steve Siemens characterization of people, and cheer on the graduates for their great accomplishments. No need to question if they'll find work right now. Just be proud for having completed a goal!
P.S.S. Kansas legislature passed a budget and a revenue bill that is now going to the Governor for signature. It will take at few weeks before the Board of Regents will pass along the budget information to K-State and on down to K-State Research and Extension. More information to come later.
PROTECT YOUR IDENTITY
Identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in the United States. During the last year nearly 9 million Americans were victims of identity theft with approximately five billion dollars lost to this crime being reported. During hard economic times it is important to not only keep an eye on your financial portfolio, it is also important to keep a close eye on your identity.
Identity theft can happen to anyone; it doesn’t matter who you are or where you live. The FTC says an identity theft crime can take many forms from renting an apartment to opening charge accounts or establishing a phone account in your name.
The following website will take you to a one-stop national resource with detailed information to help you deter, detect, and defend against the crime of identity theft: http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/microsites/idtheft/. --Diane Burnett dburnett@ksu.edu
