WORD FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH

The K-State Research and Extension Annual Conference is taking shape for October 18-20, 2010. Dr. Bob Gillen, head of the Western Kansas Agriculture Research Centers, chairs the 2010 planning committee. This year’s conference theme is “Riding the Wave of Change.” The committee is working toward a three-day conference with Monday devoted to agent association meetings and activities. The opening reception on Monday late afternoon/evening is a chance to bring the entire organization together with posters and talent (more on this in the next paragraph). Tuesday morning will feature keynote speaker Dr. Mark Taylor, who will focus on learning styles and ways to reach clientele across the generations. The KSRE awards and recognition luncheon will follow Dr. Taylor's presentation. Tuesday afternoon will include topical workshops and breakout sessions. Wednesday will be time for Program Focus Team meetings and activities.

Call for Talent – The Annual Conference committee would like to make our opening reception special with home-grown musical talent. If you or someone you know within the organization has musical talent to share, we’ll have a stage in the reception area. The committee is confident that there is much more talent than we know about across the organization. Please send your talent suggestions to "Bob Gillen," gillen@k-state.edu, and help make that evening extra special!

In the coming weeks, you will also be seeing calls for poster presentations on Monday evening and topics for breakout sessions on Tuesday afternoon. Be thinking and planning toward a great 2010 K-State Research and Extension Annual Conference.

SIGLE TO WORK PRIDE PROGRAM

The PRIDE program welcomes Nadine Sigle, Post Rock District, to serve a temporary position with the Kansas PRIDE Program. Nadine will be covering duties of Trudy Rice, PRIDE Program Associate, while Trudy serves as the Ralph L. Tabor Extension Partner with the National Association of Counties in Washington D.C. Presenters: Dr. Greg Roth, Penn State University

Lex Thompson and Bob McGrath, Imperial Young Farmers and Ranchers

Dr. Greg Roth is an extension grain crops specialist at Penn State University. Dr. Roth has experience in corn grain and corn silage production. In recent years he has expanded his research and extension work in bioenergy.

The Imperial Young Farmers and Ranchers completed sustainable biomass study in their home area of southwest Nebraska. Focusing on sustainable removals of crop residues, feedstock value, innovative collection storage and transport systems among other issues.

WORKSHOP PRESENTERS NEEDED FOR THE KANSAS YOUTH LEADERSHIP FORUM

It is time to recruit instructors/presenters for the 11th Annual Kansas Youth Leadership Forum to be held in November at Rock Springs 4-H Center. This conference, designed for youth, ages 14-18, will include speakers, workshops, consulting groups and the election of the 2011 Kansas State 4-H Youth Leadership Council.

We are recruiting proposals for workshop session instructors/presenters for Saturday, November 20. Topics should center on leadership. Some ideas might include, but are not limited to, community service, citizenship, communications, conflict management, ethics, motivation, decision making, leading by example, time management, international citizenship, multi-cultural studies, diversity, business etiquette and getting involved after high school. The Kansas State 4-H Youth Council members hope that you (or one of your volunteers) will be interested in sharing your expertise or talent with this opportunity.

KANSAS POLLINATOR CONSERVATION PLANNING SHORT COURSE

The 2008 Farm Bill makes pollinators and their habitat a conservation priority for every USDA land manager and conservationist. This training session provides an overview of pollinator-specific language in the Farm Bill and how to translate that language into on-the-ground conservation. This day-long Short Course will equip participants with the latest science-based approaches to increasing crop security and reversing the trend of pollinator decline, especially in heavily managed agricultural landscapes. Course content is tailored to the needs of NRCS, SWCS, Cooperative Extension and state department of agriculture employees as well as crop consultants, natural resource specialists, non-governmental conservation organization staff, and producers of bee-pollinated crops. The course is free to the first 30 who register. Additional seats available for $25. Participants will receive the Xerces Society's Pollinator Conservation Toolkit.

The Pollinator Conservation Planning Short Course is 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday, September 2, at the USDA NRCS Manhattan Plant Materials Center, 3800 S 20th St., Manhattan, Kansas. FAMILY DAY - MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 27

In the next month each Extension office will receive a packet of information on Family Day. Family Day is promoted as a day to eat dinner with your children. Family Day was created by CASA in 2001. For the past few years I have worked on the state committee and we have been able to include Kids a Cookin’ recipes as part of the handouts.

MARIE'S PICK . . .

Home Care for New Kansans is a program Linda Beech has been offering refugee populations in Garden City. She began programming for Burmese and Somali populations to help them make the transition to Kansas and American life easier. In addition to the language barrier, these populations face challenges in everyday life (i.e., learning to cook, clean, and do laundry with appliances and home furnishings which may be quite different from those in their homelands). Linda has focused on using inexpensive basic supplies as well as supplies needed for special cleaning situations. Tips such as keeping the sink drain and the dryer lint screen clear, and routinely changing the furnace filter are included as ways to avoid costly repairs.

Linda reports that this unique teaching opportunity has provided increased visibility for Extension in the community! Following two classes for Burmese and two for Somalis, a request came from the Garden City Community College Adult Learning Center to have three classes for Spanish-speaking newcomers. These are planned for July. The three Spanish classes and an additional class for students living in on-campus apartments were funded by a grant from the local Center for Children and Families. --Marie Blythe mblythe@ksu.edu
