WORD FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH
KSRE Annual Conference is off and running as you read this post. It will be a great week! We've got the full line up of Extension professional associations kicking things off today. Late in the afternoon is a technology and communication reception with hors d'oeurves! Capping the evening will be Epsilon Sigma Phi awards reception followed by Clover Night at Kites!
Wednesday and Thursday mornings I hope to see many of you out early for a healthy opportunity to walk or run at
Ahearn beginning at 6:00 a.m. See Doug Jardine's message below. Hope you'll be there too!
All women of KSRE are invited to a special K-State breakfast in the alumni center at 7:15 a.m. on Wednesday morning!
Wednesday morning general session starts promptly at 8:00 a.m. with President Kirk Schulz providing a welcome and Kansas State University update. Director Gary Pierzynski will also give his welcome and message via technology. Our keynote speaker, Ed O'Malley, will provide our focus for the remainder of the morning on strengthening communities with challenges for you to consider. Following break, an outstanding panel will be discussing ways KSRE might strengthen its role in building community. Then it's on to the awards luncheon where we recognize and congratulate many colleagues and friends for their achievements. Thank goodness we all have varying responsibilities within KSRE. The afternoon is packed with great learning opportunities for everyone from extracting the value of social media, to conserving Ogallala, to navigating difference, to exploiting technology, and more possibilities! The evening is again capped with professional association dinner and recognition events.
Thursday morning begins early with the 6:00 a.m. walk/run, followed by an inspirational breakfast with Coach Deb Patterson as guest speaker.
Thursday will see annual conference turn to the work of the Program Focus Teams in bringing high quality, focused Extension educational programming plans and the training and development opportunities for the workforce into action for the coming months and year.
It will be a great week! Great to have everyone in town. I pray for safe travels, excellent networking, great achievement recognition events, meaningful learning, and professional growth all mixed in with some enjoyable times for everyone involved.
It will be a great week!! --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@ksu.edu
ANOTHER GREAT KSRE AGRICULTURE, NATURAL RESOURCES AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM...
Do you know a community, organization, or committee that isn’t
focused on the “Big Picture?” Perhaps they have noble intentions but become
sidetracked by distractions. Maybe you or someone you know should become a
community coach to help and encourage them to find and stay on the “right
track” needed to achieve their goals.
The Community Coaching Academy (Academy) is a collaborative
endeavor of Kansas PRIDE, the KSU Center for Engagement, USDA Rural Development
and other organizations. The Academy uses a fun and engaging atmosphere to prepare
participants to be community coaches. Participants learn the critical community
coaching skills of listening, providing reflection, and assisting their clients to identify clear and effective strategies to achieve their goals.
I have had the pleasure of talking with the participants of
one Academy, and I found the participants to be very engaged in the
program, enthusiastic about the program, and enjoying the program.
To learn more about the Community Coaching Academy, please
visit the following website: http://www.ksre.ksu.edu/p.aspx?tabid=158, and/or contact Dan Kahl, dankahl@ksu.edu; or David Procter, dprocter@k-state.edu. You will be glad
you did! --Gregg Hadley ghadley@ksu.edu
