WORD FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH
Recently, Michigan State University Extension underwent a very challenging change process in responding to budget constraints and public expectations. From that, Tom Coon, Director of Extension at Michigan State, brought forward some foundational values and principles that are to guide the organization through its new and different structures and delivery. Those values and principles include:
- Focused and specialized programs.
- Connect with a broader range of the University's expertise.
- Increase responsiveness - agile, current.
- Enhanced accountability.
- Program presence across the state.
- Reduce administrative overhead.
- Adopt emerging technologies.
- Expand the network of people engaged.
Within K-State Research and Extension, we've consistently focused on three broad goals for our Extension organizational direction. Those goals are professional
excellence; relevant, high quality programming; and, diversity and
inclusiveness. As I reflected on those coming out of Michigan State Extension, I was pleased to see the many parallels. Accountability, responsiveness, and expertise all align well with our PFTs pursuits in professional excellence. Focused and specialized programs align perfectly with our PFTs purpose in delivering relevant, high quality programming. And, expanding the network of people engaged may be a better way of stating the goal of diversity and inclusiveness.
I like what I see in the work of our PFTs, and certainly suggests continued attention and work towards our goals to be valid and important. Thanks for all you do, and have a great week! --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@ksu.edu
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Quote for this week~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The people with whom you work reflect your own attitude. If you are suspicious, unfriendly and condescending, you will find these unlovely traits echoed all about you. But
if you are on your best behavior, you will bring out the best in the
persons with whom you are going to spend most of your working hours. Beatrice Vincent
K-STATE UNITED WAY UPDATE
As of November 30, 2011, the 2011 Live United: K-State Cares About our Neighbors campaign to support the United Way has received contributions from 560 K-State employees totaling $88,253.98!
In addition, the United Way of Riley County has received $12,330.00 in donations from 48 retired K-State employees!
During this campaign, campus members also participated in the very successful K-State Student United Way "Jail and Bail" event to raise funds for community programs. You also donated to the United Way's Winter Warm-Up Coat Drive, to collect new and gently used coats, hats, scarves, gloves and winter boots to be distributed to those in need in the greater Manhattan area.
A sincere thank you from the 2011 K-State United Way committee to all of you who have already participated in this year's campaign - your contributions to the United Way of Riley County support programs such as Boys & Girls Club, Manhattan Day Care, Kansas Legal Services, Crisis Center, Red Cross, and the Manhattan Emergency Shelter, and many more!
As we enter the final week of the 2011 campaign, we still need your help! I encourage you to participate if you have not already done so. Additional copies of donation forms are available on the campaign website, located at www.k-state.edu/unitedway. Every gift of every size makes a difference, and real change can't happen without you. --Jan Middendorf, 2011 Chair of the K-State United Way Campaign
