WORD FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH
My message last week pointing to Dr Cruzado's "Seaman Knapp Lecture" at the Association of Public and Land Grant Universities National Conference seemed to have struck a chord with some regarding keeping a focus on the BIG PICTURE. This year the APLU captured 4 videos that were a part of that national conference. I'd encourage you to follow this link to view any of those videos. More specifically, if you are interested in hearing Dr. Cruzado's lecture, rather than reading it, you can follow this link.
Each of the three speakers highlighted in the videos gave compelling stories on the importance of having a vision and a focus on the big picture. In addition to Dr. Cruzado and her lecture, "Who Needs Extension Anyway?", I'd also suggest that the George Washington Carver lecture by Dr. Diana Natalicio, President, University of Texas at El Paso was wonderful in demonstrating the importance of keeping focus on the vision and taking the steps necessary to move to that vision. If you'll listen to her message by following this link, you will feel motivated in hearing how this woman moved UTEP towards its greater role of serving that region of Texas.
In our work within Extension, we must always have a vision, set of goals, and a plan to achieve those goals. Keep your eye on the big things and be vigilant in working to move your clientele towards that vision and goals. Be a great listener to know how the message is being received. Evaluate your goals to be sure they remain on target. Never lose hope and passion for moving your clientele towards a better outcome. Don't let the little things take over your time; keep your eye on the big things. And, have a great week! --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@ksu.edu
