WORD FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH
In 2008 we joined the Change Agent States for Diversity (CAS) project. As part of the CAS project five years ago, we agreed that a first step in creating such an environment is to assess the current climate in order to identify important issues and then to create ways for the organization to address them. We are now conducting a follow-up survey, and ask for your participation by this Friday, November 22.
Within K-State Research and Extension, we seek to create an environment characterized by equal access for all employees regardless of differences, and where individuals are valued for their differences. A welcoming and inclusive climate is grounded in respect, nurtured by dialogue and evidenced by a pattern of civil interaction.
Creating and maintaining a community environment that respects individual needs, abilities, and potentials is one of the most critical initiatives that we support. A positive climate that encourages attention to fairness and discourages expressions of discrimination and harassment is very important to the organization and all individuals within and outside the organization.
We hope you will take 20 minutes to help us understand the current climate in K-State Research and Extension. The survey is designed to provide information about both positive and challenging aspects of our climate. This survey is your opportunity to describe your own personal experiences, your observations, and to offer suggestions for change that might enhance the climate.
All of your answers are confidential and all of the results will be reported in group form only. You will not be identifiable as an individual. Your participation in this project is voluntary. This research has been reviewed and approved by the Institutional Review Board. If you have questions about the research you may contact Rick Scheidt, Chair, Committee on Research Involving Human Subjects, 203 Fairchild Hall, Kansas State University, Manhattan, KS 66506, 785-532-3224; or Paula Peters, Assistant Director, KSRE, ppeters@ksu.edu, 785-532-1562; or Zelia Wiley, Assistant Dean for Diversity, KSRE, zwiley@ksu.edu, 785-532-5793.
If you have not participated in the follow up survey to help us
understand the current climate in K-State Research and Extension, please
use the following link: https://kstate.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_ctIY0QOCPHKPBk1, by November 22. Thanks for your attention to this important feedback.
Record Participation in All University Campaign! My thanks to all of you for setting a new record in participation with the K-State Foundation All University Campaign. We reached 31% participation in the campaign, setting a new record for K-State Research and Extension. Thanks so much for all you do, and for your commitment and loyalty to Kansas State University!! Your giving speaks volumes to the thousands of alumni and friends who also give to Kansas State.
Have a great week! --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@ksu.edu

This year was the first time the Diversity Programs
Office, College of Engineering, and, KSU Graduate School hosted a lunch with a
“Corporate Head Hunter” luncheon. The luncheon took place on Friday, November 8,
in the K-State Student Union. The speaker at the luncheon was Mr. Anthony
Fletcher, CEO and President of MY Future Consulting Inc. Mr. Fletcher talked
about the many things that he wishes he would have been prepared for going into
corporate America and answered questions students asked. We planned for 30 lunches to be served, more
than 25 people attended, and 21 filled out evaluations.
The MANRRS chapter had many exciting things going on in last week.
MANRRS had a
fundraising event on November 15 in the Union with Panda Express. This was the first
fundraising event that MANRRS coordinated this year. MANRRS would like
to highlight Mayra Perez-Fajardo for coordinating this
event.
On November 17 the MANRRS chapter coordinated a community
service event sponsored by Alpha Zeta with the National Guard where the
students will be helping package food. Also the DPO would like to congratulate Dr. Wiley on receiving the
stakeholder award from the National FFA Organization for her involvement from
2011 to 2013.

NOW IS THE TIME TO START PLANNING FOR THE HOLIDAYS
It may seem early, but it's time to start planning, saving and
budgeting for the holidays so you can score the best possible deals on travel,
gifts, etc. The challenge is to get ready
so you can have a stress free holiday and avoid a New Year's credit
hangover. Create a budget and gift list
and stick to it. Consult all your family members and develop a holiday
checklist to help you track your expenditures.
The Federal Trade Commission offers the following recommendations for
buying and using gift cards:
1. Only buy gift cards from
trusted sources.
2. Read the fine print for fees and
restrictions before you buy.
3. Keep the gift card receipt in case
it's lost or stolen.
4. Don't wait around to use your gift
card.
For more information on buying and using gift cards or how to handle
problems with a gift card - go to the following website: www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0182-gift-cards. --Diane Burnett, Family
Resource Management Program Focus Team Member
